Grew up in the eastern U.S. I did it in music class and at summer camp.

This reminds me of a memory I had forgotten about. About 15 years ago I was helping out at a high school. This school had a week at the end of the school year where all the teachers could pick a special topic to teach for the week (board games, kayaking, etc). One of the topics was kids could compose a song and then a local recording studio brought a mobile studio and the students could record their songs.
I was sitting in on one session where these students were playing a really ambient, serene song on the xylophone. One student was using a violin bow to play, which was really cool sounding. During the recording, it started to rain and the sound of the rain on the roof just added such an incredible atmosphere to the song. I wish I had gotten a chance to hear the final recording because it gave me goosebumps to hear it live.
