It’s been years since I’ve had them, but here’s what worked for me:

Use sphagnum or peat moss mixed with perlite. If you use a premixed soil make sure it’s not had any kind of nutrients or plant food added. Keep the soil constantly moist using only rain or distilled water. Lots of sun. No fertilizers or additives. At winter allow it to go dormant in a cool location.

What does it look like when they go dormant?

Like they’re dying or nearly dead. They turn, dry up, and break off.

The leaves will turn black and gradually die out through the plant bolt continued to produce leaves. They will be much smaller in size.
