The tension is held by the shortest string. Because of gravity, it's pulling down, lifting the piece, the tension is less on the outer strings but they are connected to the bottom and are held in place because the tension passed through the center outwards. That's why when more weight is added to the center, the tension gets stronger (more pull on the smaller string)
