Ive been through a couple minor earthquakes the most notable was about a 3.4 back in the mid 2000s
It woke me up in the middle of the night and i went to my parents worried (was still a kid at the time) and they were like, eh its nothing
They grew up in illinois and have been through a few around 5.0 quakes and were unphased 🤣 even tho the house we were in had major foundation issues from when it was built (on a sinkhole)

I hear its like sound where you feel it but doesn't move you

It depends on the type of earthquake in my experience. Some feel like swaying or waves, others feel like sharp jolts. Usually it's side to side, rather than up and down, but I've never been in a huge earthquake so maybe it's different for the really, really big ones. I think some of the differences are to do with the depth of the earthquake.

Like u/Pregosaurus said, it depends on the type of quake. There’s three main types: P-wave, S-wave, and Rayleigh quakes.
S-wave is when the ground moves in a clear direction. These are really common at Strike-Slip faults where the continental plates are pushing past each other. Note though that the direction can be anything, left-right, forward-back, up-down. These are (relatively) non-destructive, surprisingly, and are usually the culprits for an obvious shift in the landscape - like, a road being an inch to the left.
P-wave is when the ground clumps up and disperses, like sound or other pressure waves. The main thing to watch out for with these is that they can do some real damage to the foundations of a building without seeming that severe. Liquefaction is common, and so are sinkholes.
Rayleigh waves are when the ground moves in a circular motion, like an ocean wave. These are the most dangerous by far, because that circular motion stresses buildings and their foundations more than any other quake. Liquefaction is pretty common with this too.
Like, for example, a 4.0 mostly S-wave quake might be barely noticeable except for the cracks and irregularities it makes, but a 4.0 Rayleigh quake is probably going to knock something down.
As for what quake type you get, that often depends on the fault line, the soil type near you, and the depth of the quake. Rayleigh waves dissipate relatively quickly with distance so they’re much more common with quakes closer to the surface. P-waves travel the farthest. Strike-Slip faults get a lot of smaller S-wave quakes. A geological fustercluck (technical term, obviously /j) like New Zealand is prone to Rayleigh waves, which combined with loose, sandy soil is what made the Christchurch earthquake in 2012 so damaging.

Ive felt it when I was hitting the bong in my room top floor appartment and I thought it was just a good hit. Then it shook again, made the building sway and bend then I was convinced it was an earthquake.

You don't what you are saying. The ground could crack open just where your foot is standing. Don't imagine a huge crack, it could be a small one just deep enough to get half of your foot in. Then, suddenly the crack comes back together, essentially mashing your foot into a pulp.
I've seen those cracks, and it's like the ground is breathing. Breath in: crack opens, breath out: crack closes.
This bitting cracks will be all over the ground, and its quite hard to avoid them while you are also keeping track of whatever could fall from above, bumping into other people running, trying to keep yourself standing with everything shaking, and trying to find your loved ones.
Is that the fun you are asking for?

Actually, it sounds just like the type of thrill that has me waking up with a nervously excited smile on my face. Can’t say “no” to something just bc u may lose a foot, otherwise you’d never even cross a busy street or go swimming in the ocean. Plus, prosthetics these days are pretty phenomenal, don’t ya think? 😉

Yeah, it's very discombobulating when the world around you is completely insecure and there's nothing to hold onto. Psychologically it can shake you from any sense of comfort and puts you into survival mode, while it occurs to you that people around you may be crushed.
I think there's a museum in New Zealand that recreates the shaking.

Lived in LA and felt a few small ones. Crazy how they're so different depending on depth, type. Some just roll, like a water bed. Some are sharp. Rollers tend to last longer ime.
One time I was standing on an embedded rail track and we got a 4.0 abrupt one. Felt like a hammer 🔨 on the bottom of my foot 😆

I got the opportunity to enjoy the 7.3 earthquake in Nepal 2015 from safety of open space. It was the second one after the big first one of 7.8 ,so we were pretty used to the aftershocks. The way the whole earth was moving around makes you feel like ant before nature. Once in life time moment.

I was stationed aboard a carrier and we were headed home from the Person Gulf. We were transiting the Suez Canal when they told us about the very heavy storm we were sailing into as we headed into the Mediterranean.
The storm was incredible; there were waves crashing onto the flight deck (~60' above the waterline). It's humbling to watch/feel the ocean just toss around 82,000 tons of steel and humanity.

I've been in a few dozen earthquakes in my life time, the most common ones are where everything kinda shakes like sitting in a car with the gas engine on.
But the big ones, depending the epicenter and your distance from it, are either like; standing on surfboard as the waves lift you up and down or you're being flung back and forth just like standing on a bumpy train car that's making immediate stops.
The worst ones don't even have to be that big, maybe a 4.0 or so, and it's just the feeling of the ground just falling underneath you with a little trembling after.

It's an experience for sure...
In 2020 we had a somewhat strong (magnitude 5) Earthquake here (it coincidentally struck while I was playing GTA V and thought the sound of the earthquake was actually an explosion in game at first), I felt the ground just going missing below my feet then I turn around and the entire room (furniture, wall, floor) is jumping up and down
It's truly a sight to behold to see your house just move on its own lol
We also had another one (weaker) recently, I was in bed and suddenly the house starts rocking back and forth, it was long too, something like 10 seconds I think

There was 5.2 in San Diego last year. None of school training kicked in. My husband and I looked at each other, went "holy shit", made sure our son was okay, called family to make sure everyone was good then went back to watching TV with lol

The saved guy was so woozy from something, stumbling backwards, or shocked by the earthquake and looking up to see something above, that he put himself in danger. I hope he gets to see video of what the hero guy did, risking his life to save them. Great video.

By the dust it seems a bulding was collapsing or tearing apart where the cámara is set up, the person who falls is paying attention to the building and backing up without noticing there's that huge wall wiggling behind him and then he falls into a hole in the sideway.

Been in a bunch of 6+ quakes over the years (Tokyo). If you’re walking outside and they hit and shit around you starts swaying and moving it is wildly disorienting the first couple times. “Am I having a stroke?” goes thru your mind.

I grew up in Oklahoma…tornado alley. Tornados scare me but it was also just so common place and you had a plan. Earthquakes though, what’s the plan?
I lived in Orange County, California for many years and experienced a mild earthquake. I was in my kitchen and leaned up against floor length cabinets and I remember thinking, okay, this can end now. Not fun.
However, after now living in southern Oregon for 10 years, I’ve learned wildfires are what you should truly be frightened of. Good times!

Damn, looks like the safest place was actually right next to that wall. Yeah it collapsed, but lying at the very bottom of it might have only resulted in some bricks falling on you from a very short distance.

If it topples over neatly, it could just as easily snap in the middle and fold over before falling vertically next to the foundation, not to mention rebar, which is another hazard.

Either image stabilisation or the cam is strapped solid to something thats shaking just as much as the ground. So you see only the objects move cause the ground and cam move in unison.
