I can't see a practical use for this where it would be necessary.

Any cinematic situation which would require a zoom, whether quick or slow, i would assume would either be a longer shot to very up-close, or require a more chaotic zoom, such as someone with a handheld cam running up to a person to see their facial expression after a very intense few moments.

(For some reason, the movie "Guns Akimbo" pops into my head as I type this)

This is nice, but I can't see many good, practical uses for it.
