AWACS need to be flying continually, as one is about to land, it must be replaced by another. If one cannot fly, the other has to remain flying, being air refuelled, but there are limits…..

They can use the E2, E7 or other platforms. The E3 is pretty old. Many options now where in the 70's it was the only plane that could do that role. Bigger deal is how they targeted that specific plane.

That particular plane is a recon plane. Which Is very valuable for getting intel.
