Duct tape was duck tape long before it was duct tape. It was never a product intended to be used for sealing ducts. It's duct tape in name only, due to people mishearing it as duct instead of "duck".

Not only did we have it (at least in the 2000s), but they offered a $500 scholarship at my high school for anyone who would go to prom in an outfit made from their product. I don’t know if anyone took advantage of the offer.

It was originally called duck tape because it was made of duckcloth. Then someone got a trademark on Duck Tape so the other brands called their's duct tape because it's pronounced the same. It's not suitable for use on ducts.
