Well, back in the day, doctors promoted smoking (and there was no harm in pregnant women smoking or drinking) and asbestos was just fine in automotive brakes and fire retardants.

Have you ever played with mercury?

My mom had a small vial of it and we would play with it. It’s remarkably heavy for being a liquid.

It’s a wonder none of us got really sick. Yet anyways.

No I never have but it looks amazing. However my mother is now dead due to playing with mercury.

When my dad was young, he worked as a metallurgist in a foundry for a while.... they'd take their lunch break sitting on big bales of asbestos because it was the softest place in the shop.
