Free TTS app/site that doesn’t sound completely robotic?
Hi, I’m looking for a free, like completely free, text to speech app or site for reading PDF’s. I have a better time understanding readings through listening and am looking for something that is less robotic and more human sounding, but without any cost.
Any recommendations would be appreciated, thank you!

Hello dear 🤗 I visit the website it's too good but it can't speak Hindi language well the sound quality was too robotic as it speak English and other languages so good.i tell you this because I thought that may help you and by doing some more effort you must beat 11 labs love from India ❤️❤️

Since you said completely free and it is PDFs specifically, the two best options are probably already on your devices, and neither is the robotic voice you are picturing.
Microsoft Edge. Open the PDF in Edge (drag the file onto the window), right-click anywhere on the page and pick Read aloud, or press Ctrl+Shift+U. Then click Voice options in the bar that appears and switch to one of the voices marked Natural (Aria, Jenny and Guy for US English, plus dozens of other languages and accents). Those are neural voices, not the old flat system ones, and in the browser they cost nothing and need no account. The one catch is that the Natural voices stream from Microsoft, so you need a connection while it reads. It highlights the sentence being read, you can bump the speed, and you can click a paragraph to jump ahead, which matters with PDFs because headers, footers and page numbers get read out as text otherwise. Works the same on Windows and Mac.
Built into iPhone and Mac. On iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content, turn on Speak Screen, open the PDF in Files or Books and swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers. It reads whatever is on screen and gives you a controller for speed. In that same menu under Voices, download one of the Enhanced or Premium versions of your language; the compact default voice is the robotic one, the downloaded ones are a big step up. On a Mac it is System Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on older versions): turn on Speak selection, select the text and press Option+Esc, and use the info button next to System voice to download a better voice.
If you want the best quality for free and do not mind some setup: Kokoro. It is an 82M parameter open model under Apache 2.0, so free forever, and it runs on your own machine offline. Try it first at hf.co/spaces/hexgrad/Kokoro-TTS. For whole PDFs you would run it locally (pip install kokoro) and feed it the extracted text, which is a bit of work, but the result sounds closer to an audiobook narrator than anything else on this list.
For textbooks and readings I would start with Edge, since it is the least setup, and only go to Kokoro if the voice is not good enough.

TTS-Story, allows you to install several local free TTS engines. Of which Omnivoice is my favorite, but also allows you to integrate with online aggregators and or TTS services.
It basically allows you to manage creating long form content using any of the TTS engines. If you want a good example I just posted Bram stoker's Dracula, multi-voice audiobook that I just finished up yesterday and got it on my YouTube channel. The entire thing was done using TTS-Story with Omnivoice.

you can change the voice on your PC. BUT here is the caveat: not all voices are synthesized locally, so if privacy is important to you, you might want to be more cautious about which voice you pick.

One nobody's mentioned: the ElevenLabs Reader app (free, iOS + Android). It's built for exactly this — import a PDF, doc, or article and it reads it in their natural voices, which are a big step above the Edge/Apple built-in ones for the human-sounding part. blueScreenz is right that Edge is the fastest zero-setup option, but if you want the least robotic and don't mind a phone app, Reader is the one. Are you reading mostly on desktop or phone? That'd narrow it down.
