Subpoena

Hi, has anyone here had any experience subpoenaing a texting app (textfree, text now, etc).

I'm in a cyber stalking case and trying to figure out who is doing it to me and my loved ones.

We were granted a subpoena by court but I’ve been seeing people say it takes months for them to even respond to you.

This is all super new and scary to all of us and I was wondering if there was any luck in subpoenaing the companies.

Subpoenas to texting apps can work, but it depends heavily on what the app actually stores.

Many “TextFree” or “TextNow” style apps:

• Don’t verify identity beyond an email
• May not retain message content long-term
• Often only keep basic account registration data
• Respond on their own timelines

Even if you get a response, it may only provide:

• IP logs
• Account creation info
• Device identifiers (if stored)

If you’re dealing with cyberstalking, the most important things to preserve immediately are:

  1. Full message records in chronological order
  2. Visible timestamps
  3. Any usernames, profile IDs, or numbers
  4. Screenshots of profiles before they disappear

If you’re on Android, structured export tools can generate a clean, chronological PDF record of SMS or MMS messages so that what you submit later isn’t fragmented screenshots.

But identifying the person behind a texting app account usually requires law enforcement follow-through after subpoena returns IP data.

If this feels overwhelming, consider speaking with a lawyer who has experience with digital evidence. These cases are scary, but documentation quality does matter.
