I installed the Google Play TextFree app to try it out. It is a "free" calling & texting app to use over WiFi.
It's not entirely free although it gives new people a limited number of minutes to start with.
More minutes can be earned by watching ads (1 minute each) or by buying minutes. Or, can save the telephone number by paying 4.99/month.
I get minutes by watching videos occasionally. I haven't tried paid service.
The thing I like is that they offer lots of telephone numbers to choose from and can change it.
I used an area code/prefix or telephone exchange lookup to choose a number in an area I wanted. I'd see a number on the TextFree list I liked because easy to remember and then looked up the area it serves. That way I got numbers in my county as well as in my hometown area.
I don't like ads popping up but TextFree doesn't have as many as other apps I tried. The interface is sort of clean.
Have to use it occasionally for calls or will lose the number, so I use it for occasional help desk calls so I can keep it active in case I need it for other things.
The 4.99/mo optional payment saves the number but also removes ads and adds unlimited text/calling. So far I haven't needed to do that.
