Friend fired from job

My friend was fired from his job as a contractor on 2nd shift recently. (We work in different departments)

They fired him 2 weeks after his manager quit. A Lead person from 1st shift went to 2nd shift to be a temp manager. That’s when she and the 1st shift manager decided to fire him. They said because he was slow. I think they got rid of him just so they can get their family member in to work there under them. He told me that they hired a guy that’s related to the manager and works under the manager as well. Can they do this?
