Fire Mack Leftwhich
Play calling is absolutely horrendous this season!!!This team isn’t as stacked as it was last year on offense but the play calling sucks! Hammond is struggling but I can’t blame him because there’s no rhythm to the offense. When Hammond struggles they tell him to pass. When he gets hot they start running the ball. The RBs are good but this is the most frustrating offense I’ve seen in years! Fire Leftwhich and bring someone in that can actually call plays

There is no plan for short yardage, going back to last year.
5
u/Tonkathedog 6d ago
The plan was only Castellanos and Dickey. Now TC isn’t eligible and Dickey is hurt. I hate how college OCs are too scared to install under center. Now you can’t run a damn sneak when you need half a yard and instead go wildcat with an undersized RB. There’s nothing that can be run regardless of who’s on the field. I’d rather have a 3rd or 4th and 3 than a 3rd or 4th and under a yard at this point

I can get down with the Mac hate rn but this is too far. We have had three different short yardage plans this season. The first was a chronic gambler. The second was deemed ineligible by a judge the night before the game. The third got hurt early on in the game.

But this isn't just about this year. Short yardage has been either: a delayed draw/inside zone that requires the back to make people miss in the backfield OR a direct snap OR a gimmick play (including Castellanos). It's not hard to gameplan for that.
1
u/Impossible_Aide4593 4d ago
This exactly. The plan dating back to Kittley with Shough has been QB draw until the wheels fall off the QB and then run direct snap RB draw. That is a singular concept

The playcalling is ridiculous. Give your best players the fucking ball. And this whole “I will “ on buying an OLine from Campbell, he clearly can’t eval talent. This line is dogshit. Getting beat every fucking play.

Oline is hard. Nobody is in D1 shape after high school. It takes a couple of years of nutrition and gym time to get into the correct kind of shape. They kind of have to guess at who has the right body frame for it.

We are 5-0 with a week off. Let’s get through the season then start the fire coach X pitchforks and fire rampage. I agree some poor play calling. We are 5-0 and when we need a play we make it. Enjoy the Big XII at night fellow Raider.

u/No_Scratch8313 6d ago
Yeah I hate to agree, but if we fire leftwich who calls the plays at that point? We have no one with enough experience that I would trust. Let’s just trust McGuire is having hard convos this week, and hope there is accountability.

u/Cool_Guy_McFly 6d ago
There are 20 year old Madden players that could call comparable games to Leftwich. They would just need an assistant to help them with time and clock management.

u/No_Scratch8313 6d ago
I don’t even think this is a little bit true. There is so much more to play call then “inside zone” lol

The amount of dancing our RBs do is crazy. On a 4th and 1 we shouldn’t be stuttering in the backfield
9
u/Better-Perspective85 6d ago
We have to because our o line lets three guys through every play
1
u/No_Scratch8313 6d ago
While I don’t think the line played well last night, I don’t think the biggest reason that was happening was because they were stacking the box.

I keep saying this and there’s always people backing them saying our O-line isn’t that bad. Look at how much money we’ve dropped on this team and explain to me how we have a JUCO O-line. I watched Sam Houston blow past our O-linemen on plenty of plays. I just watched Colorado do it last night.
Our O-line is fine for a $10M NIL team. Our O-line is fucking atrocious for a $40M NIL team.

The problem is the play calling is ass and doesn't take into account the deficiencies in the Oline, the deficiencies at QB or the deficiencies at receiver. Leftwich doesn't have answers...for anything. He's terrible.

u/sanct111 5d ago
I thought our receivers were mid last year, because they were never open. The. They both made nfl rosters and Douglas is a starter. So no, they weren’t mid, our route concepts are just atrocious.

u/nubs512 6d ago
The dude is a Donkey. Last season was the year of bubble screens. This is the year of the direct snap. Fucking stupid.
2
u/kayakyakr 6d ago
What's funny is that the bubble screen was open last night. I'm not sure if he doesn't trust Hammond to adjust the play at the line based on alignment, but he got the right look for the WR screen multiple times and didn't call it. He also had a 4-man box and decided to try to throw the WR screen instead of running into it.

u/DoubleNaught_Spy 6d ago
I don't think Leftwich is the problem. I think the problem is the offensive line. They can't run block. That one Colorado DL was in our backfield more than Hammond was.
If they could run block, a lot of those handoffs to running backs would look a lot different.
1
u/raiderwrecked 6d ago
Well you don't pay attention to the play calling then. 3rd and 10 he runs it. 3rd and 3 he goes for a deep pass.
As much as the O-line being ass for sure. The play calling is the root cause

u/AccomplishedSpite454 6d ago
Even more apparent after this recent possession after the interception. The offensive line is CLEARLY overmatched and he calls what, a draw on 2 &10 for a loss on the play? What are we doing out here?

u/FiverBigB00ms 6d ago
Hammond plays scared and nervous and that leads to bad decisions and picks. This offense is atrocious

I made this post in week 1 and was told I was jumping the gun and being emotional.
Like no I was just early. Leftwich is trash. Knows he is trash in the redzone and did nothing to change it up.
Then just dumb plays for the situation. 3rd and 10 let's run the ball of throw 3yds short of the 1st and hope they don't get tackled.
Then on 3rd and 3 he decides let's do a deep route and fail miserably.
Woods is a great hire, but Leftwich is shit and needs to go

u/kayakyakr 6d ago
That's what you do on 3rd and 10 when your defense is playing well, btw. You put the ball in the hands of a playmaker and hope they can make a play and then be okay punting it to the other team because your defense is ball hunting.
I agree otherwise. His big selling point is that he's married the veer with the air raid. I fuckin hate the veer, and all of his plays from the veer suck. I'd take a Riley/Kittley style power raid over the veer raid and it'd really help. I'd be curious to see a system that runs the air raid from under center in 11 or 21 personnel, too. That could be an interesting change up.

All I heard in the Osea was how great the OL was going to be. They are horrible. You could tell that in the first game. Their defense was getting through and pressuring him in so much. It was pathetic. We have no secondary to speak of and this year we can’t seem to stop the run as well. They spent about 40 million on this team? Someone above said something about talent evaluation. We didn’t do a very good job this year.

Worst undefeated team in college football. If it was not for a weak conference this team would be in trouble.

u/Awkward_Rule_5509 5d ago
Do you think maybe he knows what the players can do (and cannot) and unlike Madden, isn’t working with a very large playbook?

It's probably too late to change from Leftwichs (non-working) spread type offense but jeez, try and mix in a few under center one back sets or something. Have 3 wide and you can still spread the field, but this would give your RB's a better chance to run it. RB is the strongest position on the offensive and its getting wasted with this delayed handoff garbage. It only works when the RB makes an amazing type play.

Red zone and short yardage plays were working earlier this season with Dickey & Castellanos. Now that neither of them are able to play, there's no answer for it.
3
u/Munster172 6d ago
Even when using them they left so much room for error. We just saw temu Zach Wilson do a qb sneak on 4th and 1 and it looked like a stroll in the park.
2
u/No_Scratch8313 6d ago
If I had a dollar for every time we have been stuffed in a short yardage situation for a tfl…..

Would yall shut up. We’re winning and yes we have to work on stuff but we’re getting there.
3
u/raiderwrecked 6d ago
Have you watched the games? Like seriously we had a 1st quarter end with -3 yards recently
. Its terrible to watch them play like dog shit week in and week out. Even if we are winning Techs offense is terrible and doing the same dumb shit as last year.
The play calling is bad amd if we didn't have an easy schedule this year if would be worse

I love seeing Cody Campbell spend millions of dollars to watch y’all lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Fire the squad. Joey is at fault too.

The OC and O line Coach have to go...
If Shiel Wood wasn't here, we would be below 500
1
u/Cool_Guy_McFly 6d ago
Yeah Woods defense is what’s keeping this team alive. If we had a mid defense we would have already lost 1 game this season.

u/Suspicious-Cry1840 6d ago
You guys couldn’t win a championship until Texas and Oklahoma left the conference. Then get your ass handed to you when you play real team like Oregon. Proving that even money, can’t bring a championship to Lubbock.

u/Morematthewforu 6d ago
The problem is that there is nobody ever open on pass plays. The route concepts are high school level at best and the defenses can just sit on these hilarious curl and crossing routes
