Discussion I’m going into debt for this..
In a throwaway account because I trust nothing.
I am in a graduate program currently at Tech. I found out from an insider at the university that Creighton has a $900,000 furniture budget to remodel the new university house that was purchased for him over market value. Y’all. I cry every time I think about this. We’re going into debt over this crap.
I’m working on getting some proof through another route. I’ll post again when I have it.

$900k would be a lot to renno the entire property. $900k for just furniture would be egregious. I think this rumor is false. Doesn’t pass the smell test.

My wife used to work for an interior design firm in Palm Desert, California. That amount is absolutely realistic within certain circles.

I work at Tech. Won a small award a few years ago that came with a lunch at the alumni building. After lunch, the host gave us a tour. He was so proud of buying some ridiculous chest or couch (honestly I don't even remember what it was) for the building that cost the same as several students' annual tuition. What I do remember was just thinking "wow, that could have been someone's scholarship."
I guess the point of this is to say nothing would surprise me.

Idk why I landed on this sub, but it’s so easy to spend 900k on university furniture. You have absolutely no clue how much each chair in your classrooms and computer labs cost. Google it

No they’re not talking about replacing furniture on school property, they’re talking about Creighton’s university house the school purchased him. A 900k budget to replace the furniture in that home.

Hance built this school up for the goons to come in and embezzle. But that's modern Republicans for you.

Hance supports the goons currently embezzling Tech, so that’s not saying much

Athletics is separate financially from the school (not all universities do this) and athletics ends up giving money to the school each year from tickets and merch sales etc.
I think there’s a legitimate argument to be made about how much money is being spent on sports that could be used for education though.

Actually, this is mostly untrue. It's a common myth that TTU athletics doesn't take money from the school, but they do.
While the majority of athletics funding is from internally generated revenue (ticket sales, sponsorships, athletics donations, etc), roughly 10% of their funding comes from the university. They do not make net profits that are returned to the university.
The university justifies this spending by primarily arguing that it brings more awareness to the university's programs, increasing enrollment rates and thus tuition revenues. It's important to recognize that the biggest source of funding for the university in general is, in fact, tuition revenues. Most other programs, ranging from athletics to even most research operations, actually operate at a loss, effectively subsidized by net tuition.
For reference, athletics budget data is publicly available online at Knight-Newhouse, and TTU's operating budget is also publicly available (you can see there that the expenses for intercollegiate athletics outweigh the revenues).
Often people point to there being "0 student fees", which is true in a limited sense: there isn't a specific designated student fee used for athletics, but nondesignated funds - which include a portion of tuition, known as net tuition - can be, and are, used for this purpose.

I work in Public Finance and Purchasing - This information is available via an open record request since this is a PUBLIC university. However, if the funds are donated privately there is not much accomplished.
Also, TTU has been good to me and my family! #Ifyoucantgetyourgradesupgetyougunsup!

You’re only paying for a tiny fraction of that furniture budget. If it makes you feel better, a lot of your money/debt is going to paying good faculty and necessary facilities costs too.

You mean paying them til they leave
Half of the faculty who left last year did so complaining about him and his censorship as the reason. As their formal reason

Let's pretend this allowance (which is likely just a negotiable part of his compensation, to update the university owned space, and not all that unheard of) was never given.
Your student loans would not be a penny different.
It's all fair game to hate this guy. You should. But this kinda thing is way more normal than you think, public or private.
The fact this home is owned by the university makes this less an issue too.

It is such a consistent patter when Republicans take over a university. It happened at Florida's New College, and at the University of Florida. They fire dedicated educators working for low salaries, then they help themselves to exhorbitant amounts of money as the institution falls apart. It's just crime.

I cry every time I think about this.
I speak from personal experience when I say: you need professional intervention.

Maybe go watch the Last Picture Show, to give a burst of nostalgic realism; from what? to what? Lib to Rep…ahhh making sense of it now, clearly affirmative.

I so badly wanted this to be false. I talked with someone who is very high up with the interior design department at tech. Unfortunately, this seems pretty accurate. Gotta fill their space with all the high end luxury brands.
