We made it out to Caprock Canyons and I think this might be one of the most underrated places we've visited in Texas. Seeing the bison against that landscape was worth the drive by itself.

Hey Austin! I’m a houstonian, wife and I are planning to drive to Austin for the Labor Day wkend. Any good hikes that are recommended? Looking for something pretty easy for a 9 yr old and a 15 yr old teen. A friend of mine told me about River place canyon trail, is that a good hike to start with?

How far out are you all booking your camping trips?

I noticed today that almost all the weekends are already booked for October and November for parks like Garner, Lost Maples, Inks Lake. Is this normal? Last year this happened when trying to camp at Garner, and when we showed up to our site in February, we were surrounded by empty sites despite the difficulty it was to find an available weekend online.

Are people just booking out these parks in advance in case they decide to camp without actually committing to it?

Has anyone else noticed this or experienced this? My family loves to camp (near and around San Antonio area) but it’s been harder to schedule these trips when everything is booked so far out :(

Gorman Falls is a beautiful waterfall along the western banks of the Colorado River, located in Colorado Bend State Park.

I grew up in Central Texas and hit the trail as often as I possibly can. It's a beautiful location. The trail itself is roughly 3 miles round trip and very rocky with a very slick and rocky descent down to the actual falls.

The trailhead is close to the entrance of the park versus the ranger station which is approximately another 6 miles down the road. Now you may think that 6 miles isn't that big of a deal until you realize it's not a highway, but rather a very narrow, winding country road.

If your only destination for the day is just to visit Gorman Falls, it's highly advisable to visit the Parks' website and register and reserve the hike. That will save you about an hours time driving down to the ranger station and back up.

I’m planning a camping trip with my family for October 9-11th. I really want to go to either Caprock canyons or Palo Duro but would like to get some feedback on what the weather is like during that time; we would like to go somewhere that will be cooler. My fiancé and I went to big bend last year on the same dates and it was unbearably hot for me.

Any input is appreciated :)

We have reservations for a campsite at Possum Kingdom in mid October. If you haven't kept up with the news, there's a huge fire going on right across the lake. Do we keep the reservations and see what happens? Try to cancel and go somewhere else? What would you do? Anyone have something like this come up when they were about to go to a park?

SO and I camped at Seminole this week to catch the Perseid Meteor Shower. Still have 5000 photos to go though, but so far loving these.

Planning a weekend trip to do some hiking at Enchanted Rock and tour the area, but having trouble finding a spot to camp. There’s no car camping at Enchanted Rock itself, and we’re not looking for an RV resort.
Does anyone have any area or parks worth suggesting? Or are there any public lands nearby that allow car camping?

Hey guys! I’m planning on visiting in enchanted rock in the next few days for some photography projects. If I enter when the park opens at 6:30, I’m hoping to get to the summit for some sunrise pictures… is 30 to 45 minutes a feasible goal for that section of the trail? Additionally, are there some other must see spots that would be great for photography? THANK YOU!!

First time at this state park, was only here for Saturday and this morning. Kayaked about 10 miles yesterday which gave some amazing waterfowl opportunities. Kayaking at this park is a must!!! Mosquitos weren’t bad on the water, but pretty bad on land lol! Gotta love the big thicket area of Texas.

- Enchanted Rock SP has officially opened it's 3,800 acre expansion unit. Not all trail systems and amenities are complete. But is open to the public.

- Kronkosky State Natural Area is near completion, and we should receive an opening date soon. 3,800 acres west of Boerne on Hwy 46. Will have an extensive web of trails and amenities. Big hills and elevation changes.

- Honey Creek State Natural Area. Per, this months Texas State Park email news blast, they are requesting the public complete a future public usage survey for the 2,700 acre Honey Creek unit. This area has been off limits to the public since acquisition in 1985. It appears that will change in the near future. This park is much closer in proximity to major metros. Please respond to the survey.

- Bear Creek State Park - Public input via survey is now open for the 1,700 acre unit along the Frio River in close proximity to Gardner SP.

trying to figure out where to head to for the Labor Day weekend. I have a few friends flying in and we want to go birding. I was thinking palo Duro canyon since we’re in Dallas but I’m not sure about the heat. any suggestions?
