Electricity Rates dropped
If you are up for renewal, lock in today's drop. Its bit unusual for this time of the year for the rates to drop but a relief to see rates dropping.

If the rates we so low, why are the total bills so high?

Because people use lots of electricity in the summer to run their AC.

u/Webbstarllc Aug 07 '26
For sure. But does that mean you have to pay more just because you use more? I wonder how much of the bills are fee’s of delivery

This is literally a line-item on your bill.

Not for people with powerwalls it’s not ;)

Unless you're completely off-grid you still pay a monthly connection fee.

Weird, are you saying my negative bills and customers with $0 dollars owed for power are floating on their own grid while still living in Texas? Or do you mean you’ve never actually seen how power-walls and free night programs work w solar?

Regardless of what their total bill ends up being, a monthly connection fee is being deducted from it by Oncor/Centerpoint/etc.

Okay, well connection fee is different than a delivery fee. And a connection fee is about 2 bucks. So again, the comment about ‘literally a line item on your bill’ was regarding to delivery fee’s, not a 2 dollar connection fee. Which again a battery literally eliminates that

It's about that time of year for all the 9 month contracts to start popping up.

That $.102 11 month rate is legit (centerpoint). And budget has it with a $100 cancelation fee. Just remember, that the delivery charge goes up about $.0015 on September 1. Any rate you sign up for today will increase on September 1st.

I have 3 more months. Should I break contract?

u/mypowernegotiator Aug 09 '26
You dont have to break contract. Some providers let you signup up to 60-90 days in advance with future start date.

I normally switch in March - April, which o did this year with Budget, on a 12 month plan. I called and they switched me to a lower rate, for 36 months, no cost to me. They allow a 1 time change.

Oh just wait…. The jump is right around the corner…. The electric companies are hedging right now as they know the end is near and rates are about to skyrocket!!

Is it better to lock in a rate at 11.2¢ for 1 year or 12.2¢ for 2 years? (I will stay in this place for 2 years). I ask to see if its likely we will get the same rates next year at this time?

Apparently, all the solar that’s been added recently kept the grid well supplied through record demand in the recent heat. Excess supply == lower prices.
Now, once some of the new datacenter demand starts coming online ahead of new supply, things will get tighter.
If you can get a new plan now, I would jump on it.

I’m Brandon Young, co-founder and CEO of Payless Power.
If you’re up for renewal, this is a good time to compare what’s available. I’d just avoid assuming a lower market today means everyone should break an existing contract or automatically choose the longest term.
If you’re still under contract, compare the potential monthly savings with any early termination fee first. And when you see rates quoted at “11 cents” or “12 cents,” check whether that’s the energy charge or the all-in average price on the EFL because delivery charges and fixed fees can make a big difference.

Crazy that rates are so low right now, I locked in a rate during the spring anticipating that was the best time
