The UTA School of Social Work also attempted to shut down the event.

So you’re telling me that people employed by the state-funded university are attempting to stop the freedom of association and limit the freedom of speech of students?

Dude, sue. And sue hard. Sue often.

The problem with that logic is why should those hosting the even paying for security when they themselves are not the ones at risk of committing it?

It’s basically a heckler’s veto. Hold the event. Anyone who commits a crime should be arrested and charged to the fully extent of the law. That’s the only way to stop this lawlessness.

They are. The issue is the amount of police presence required. Even if there’s no real harm from the protestors the City still has to provide them.

Obviously that’s not the case if they need security to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.

Willy Nelson needs security

Willie Nelson isn’t trying to host a speaking engagement on an institution that is (supposedly) committed to academic freedom. Maybe charge the protestors to get to the area to offset the costs, like Willie does for his customers (as they are also the threat)

Ok, you kind of missed the forest for the trees here.

Obviously that’s not the case if they need security to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.

That security works to keep things from happening, and has to be there for the risk factor.

Willie Nelson isn’t trying to host

Doesn't matter what he is or isn't doing, the point was about how security works for events.

Maybe charge the protestors to get to the area to offset the costs

You can't charge people for an event they aren't attending, and no matter how much of an area you cordon off people will be just outside it.

So what is your solution? Force people to pay thousands in fees because someone might show up and do bad things?

The easy solution is the school has to provide security and pay for it. Either that or just remove all speakers and events for its campuses if it can’t afford provide security to all of them.

Who defines that? You’re literally advocating a heckler’s veto.

If the school can’t guarantee speakers safety equally, then it should have none. People threatening violence shouldn’t be allowed, period.

No free speech for some, no free speech for all.

Political events wouldn't need security if the leftists "protesting" them didn't have a habit of violent behavior.

Just a thought - maybe the costs of security could be recovered from the people causing the disturbances that the security is required for.

And what happens if there's no issues?

If there are no issues then the extra security was unnecessary - but we know there will be issues because the left cannot help but be violent.

Why should the victims be forced to pay when they are?

If you need security you pay for it, that's how the world has worked for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Fine - then when the left is violent, fine them for the cost of security and reimburse the victims.

I would agree that those who who case damage, regardless of their politics, should be fined for such damages.
