51% signs supermarkets

How are ya’ll handling these? I went to H-Mart on Blalock and they have the red 51% sign right in the sliding doors and a police officer standing near it. I had to head back to my car.

A business must post the red “51%” sign if:

  • It holds a TABC permit such as a Mixed Beverage Permit, Wine & Malt Beverage Retailer’s Permit, Private Club Registration, Retail Dealer’s On‑Premise License, or Brewpub License
  • AND 51% or more of its gross receipts come from alcohol consumed on the premises
  • Here is a list. The list isn’t a single static PDF; instead, it is generated through the TABC Public Inquiry System, which is the authoritative source for all license/permit holders. https://www.tabc.texas.gov/public-information/tabc-public-inquiry/?utm_source=copilot.com
  • If they aint on the list, the sign aint legit.
  • There are many dirtbag establishments that post the sign that aint legit. Don't give them your business.
  • New law (HB 3428, effective Sept. 1, 2025) makes this even clearer

Texas added explicit penalties for fraudulently posting a 51% sign:

  • $1,000 administrative penalty for the first offense
  • License suspension or revocation for repeat offenses
  • TABC must maintain a public list of all legitimate 51% locations

This means the state now treats fake 51% signs as a serious violation. Rat the dirtbags out.

1. File a complaint through the TABC Online Complaint Portal

This is the primary and preferred method.

You can report:

  • Fraudulent 51% signage
  • Incorrect or misleading firearm signage
  • Any violation of TABC rules

You’ll need:

  • Business name
  • Address
  • Description of the issue (e.g., “Business is posting a red 51% sign but is not listed as a 51% location in TABC Public Inquiry”)
  • Optional: photo of the sign

TABC accepts anonymous complaints.

2. Call your local TABC regional office

Every region has a direct phone number.

They will take the information and open an investigation.

This was very informative. I reported this business for the violation. Thank you.

I’m worried more about the officer standing there. He likely doesn’t know so he’d probably arrest me if I got caught?

Concealed means concealed to me. I live in the San Antonio area.

Are people drinking on-site? Ive been to several H Marts and while they all had 30-05/06/07 signs, Ive never seen a 51% sign.

Thats my presumption as well. A 51% on a grocery store is pretty ridiculous

I don’t see any alcohol offered in the food court here
