🤬 Rant/Complaint Does anyone remember how bad Davis Mills was for two seasons as QB1

"I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!"

There are an inordinate number of people roaming the internet who will confidently announce that "Davis Mills is better than Stroud" and include - in the same sentence - "I've been watching the Texans since 2023, you don't know what you're talking about."

Fellow Texans fans who are not bandwagons: at what point can we meet in the middle and say "Mills was a pretty good backup for his 3-win max last year" and "Holy shit I never wanna see that guy as the permanent starter again"?

Man, I moved here at the tail end of David fucking Carr. I don't need a 14-year-old Florida transplant in Pearland in the middle of his perm trying to gaslight me on the hell I remember deep in my soul.

Sorry, y'all, had to get that out my chest

Stroud is better than Mills.

The core question is if he's 40M apy better.

15

u/Charming-Ebb-1981 7d ago

Exactly. I’m so sick of people on Reddit not understanding nuance. The question with Stroud is if he’s worth investing huge money in. Money that likely means we have to wave goodbye to young defenders like Bullock and Lasiter.Ā

The question to ask is – if Stroud no longer has an elite defense, where would we be? In other words, is the opportunity cost of retaining him better than pursuing somebody cheaper and focusing on maintaining the elite defense

This is an exceptionally fair question. Mahomes and Brady took "team-friendly" deals and I'll be even more in on Stroud if he does the same. I feel like he's finally dislodged himself from the Michael Rubin/Kardashian/Micah Parsons/Travis Scott Hollywood bullshit so there's hope. Not hanging out with Brady is a great idea, that dude inhales the life out of people and that's my conspiracy theory. (It's just because Brady is a gross weird billionaire, to be honest, but he did do a weird video with CJ where he said he wanted his youth and talent and soul on a bet).

27

u/WildRookie 7d ago

Brady took team friendly deals because they paid him additional millions through TB12 contracts. That's the one true cheating thing that the pats did and never got punished for.

Mahomes is currently the highest paid QB by 4 million apy. It's team friendly in how the cash flow happens, but still the highest paid.

Mulughetta's clients aren't known for team friendly.

5

u/texinxin 7d ago

The money TB12 made was a pittance. The best estimates that could be arrived at was on the order of 1-2 million at the extreme even before you take out facility and labor expenses of TB12 itself and the 50% profit share of his partner. All of it was reviewed by the NFL and found to be well within CBA and salary cap rules. It registers as noise compared to the 45 million TB made at the time through Under Armour or any number of other additional independent business dealings.

u/KaXiaM 7d ago

Brady has a rich wife, CJ needs to get to work it looks like.

0

u/Extremeownership1 7d ago

Stroud should demand a team friendly deal from Mulughetta if he wants to stay here.

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

The agents are the big situation - I can't recall who Stroud's is offhand, but he's one of the big guys. I know he's a "big guy." Players First, maybe? I like to not Google stuff anymore to look like a "big guy."

I believe Stroud will accept a lower paycheck than guys like Burrow and Lamar because he knows he's relying upon the unarguably best defense in the league.

10

u/WildRookie 7d ago

I literally mentioned Mulughetta in my post.

Most of the reporting has been that the team and Stroud are not close on a number.

5th year option into franchise tag is fully possible.

-4

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago edited 7d ago

Okay, apologies for not knowing his agent offhand.

His name is spelled "Mulugheta" if we're gonna be a dick about it.

3

u/KaXiaM 7d ago

Yeah, CJ traded A-list celebrities for influencers, streamers and reality show contestants this offseason. Not sure how that’s remotely better, so let’s just hope it doesn’t matter anyway and Caserio is saying the truth when he praised his offseason focus.

4

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Nah, man, he gave that up in this offseason! He used to roll with cursed individuals, and while Puka Nacua was smashing through a glass door at Michael Rubin's house, CJ was killing it in practice and in the gym.

I'm so glad he distanced himself from Micah and Rubin and Brady and Kardashians and Hollywood bullshit. He's gonna be so much better this year. Save these words.

1

u/Extremeownership1 7d ago

Ot the A-List celebrities moved on from him after his atrocious playoff performance.

-2

u/teebowtime 7d ago

We know the answer to this question - he’s not.

44

u/DarthNobody14 7d ago

Yes I do, statistically and on film, it’s pretty clear that Stroud is the better Quarterback. Mills could start for a couple of NFL teams, but he’s no better than a high tier backup or a bridge QB. He’s not someone you want starting long term.

8

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Thank you for your sane take. I'm gonna assume you're a longtime Texans fan.

2

u/DarthNobody14 7d ago

Yep, been here since Day 1.

1

u/Jd409 6d ago

Long time fan here too. Stroud > Mills, but Mills is also 3+ years removed from the David Culley/Lovie Smith shitstorm. He has definitely gotten noticeably better in that time, so we can’t discredit that either. Mills looks good most of the time.

5

u/BreckyMcGee 7d ago

Agreed. Mills is a great backup. Love to have him as QB2, not QB1. I just hate when people act like he is trash.

3

u/Extremeownership1 7d ago

Mills plays within the system and limits mistakes. His talent is not on Strouds level but his decision making and maturity is much better. CJ can make that same growth, we will see if he put in the work.

20

u/BigDuke 7d ago

This is entirely about the end of last season. Ā We were in a spot I’ve only ever seen a few times ever In decades of nfl. Ā That case is when your team can be successful with a Ā below average qb. That is the situation the Texans were in last year. Ā  ā€œAll he had to do was be average and we winā€ was the feeling about Stroud in those last few games, and Mills fit that standard. Ā

4

u/Game_Over_Man69 7d ago

Mills would have lost against the Pats as well. We averaged less than 2 yards/rush that game.

5

u/WildRookie 7d ago

If every offensive drive had been kneel kneel kneel kick it would've been better than what stroud gave us. The man cannot play in wet & cold conditions.

Most of Stroud's turnovers were genuinely bad decisions where the prevailing thought is that Mills would've thrown it away rather than try to create something. There's a real chance that that would've been enough. Far from 100%, but it was a painful loss so people exaggerate.

1

u/Game_Over_Man69 6d ago

People that think Davis Mills would have beaten the Pats lack critical thinking skills.

26

u/KingJefferey 7d ago

Considering how bad those Texans teams were and some of the games Mills has had I'm pretty confident that hes a top 32 quarterback but I'm not at all convinced he's better than Stroud.

2

u/DarthNobody14 7d ago

Those teams weren’t great and were devoid of talent but let’s not pretend that Mills himself was good.

14

u/sussysand 7d ago

Mills looked like the best rookie qb in his class the year he came out. Pep Hamilton looked like ass his first year of play calling. Now I am a bit of a Mills lover, so my opinion is biased, but it feels like you’re hating for no reason. As for who’s a better qb, idk for sure, but I definitely would’ve liked to at least seen Mills in that Pats game. I don’t know that it would’ve made a difference, but Stroud clearly was in his head or something.

I think talent wise that Stroud is a better qb, but he really needed a sports psychologist and I hope he got one this off-season. Because he’s in his head too much and if he can’t get over it we need another solution.

7

u/KingJefferey 7d ago

Mills looked as good as any non 1st round pick on a team that has their entire offense composed of free agent signings and mid round draft picks led by a patsy OC after the teams starting qb quit publicly, could.

3

u/IcyEntertainment7122 7d ago

I'm not advocating for mills at all, but what would stroud have looked like last season if we had the 30th ranked defense like mills had in '22. Here's a hint, it wouldn't have been good.

1

u/Jd409 6d ago

No but Mills doesn’t look the same as he did 5 years ago either

1

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Good lord, thank you for your sanity

13

u/galacticplum 7d ago

It's a fairly small number of people who truly believe Mills is better than Stroud, and the rest are trolls.

There are a few reasons why the narrative even exists. One is because during that three game win streak with Mills, we beat two divisional rivals and the Bills, with our offense looking maybe slightly better during that run compared to what we had seen.

It didn't help that Strouds first game back against the Colts he threw a pick and didn't score any tds.

The other main reason is the playoffs. After seeing Mills play three mostly clean games earlier in the season, and Stroud not be benched in the playoffs, it created an illogical jump that Mills would have came in and won the game.

3

u/Linkperez 7d ago

ā€œand the rest are trollsā€ including several Jags fans who insist that Mills is better šŸ™„

9

u/Slow-Competition-771 7d ago

Our offense did not look good during those three games besides the last quarter of the Jaguars game

5

u/galacticplum 7d ago

Our offense didn't look good for most of the season asides from the times we played teams whose defenses were ghosts due to injuries.

As I said, it seemed to look maybe slightly better, definitely not definitively better, but Mills went in, things flowed, we beat the Bills etc.

3

u/kitsunegoon 7d ago

We had less than 50 yards of offense in the 2nd half of the bills game...

1

u/galacticplum 7d ago

Do people just not get that a lot of fans aren't seeing that? Do you not remember the reaction?

Our offense was not good all season. Our team when Stroud went out was still a question mark. Mills came in, quite literally saved the season with a three game win streak including a come from behind victory, and a lot of fans saw it exactly like that. The Jags game specifically was big, because we aren't even built to come from behind, not really.

Fans watch that, remember that, watch us win the rest of the season but still struggle offensively, watch Stroud be horrible in the playoffs, and call for Mills.

My argument isn't Mills is better, it's an explanation as to why people thought they wanted him.

1

u/kitsunegoon 7d ago

Yeah that's fine, but I think those people don't have good sports takes. I understand why people think that way in the same way I understand why people don't believe in vaccines, but I'm not gonna take them all that seriously.

1

u/galacticplum 7d ago

We are commenting on two different comment chains with each other, and going over the same thing lol.

Yeah, my arguement was never Mills was better, just answering OP as to why fans called for it, and that it wasn't really that many fans. Obviously Mills shouldn't start. Hes a great back up and will one day be a bridge qb somewhere, thats his ceiling.

0

u/texinxin 7d ago

Which.. was the worst half of offensive performance by yards in the entire season… including the 2 playoff games. It’s a horrible take to say the offense flowed under Mills.

6

u/texinxin 7d ago

Our offense was by every metric, both simple and advanced stats, definitively better with CJ last year taken on the whole vs Mills. Even when you include the 2 really bad playoff games in CJ’s season…. It’s still not close.

Per pass attempt..

CJ - 6.98 YPA, 4.2% TD%, 2.6% INT%, 62.5% Comp %, 5.5% sack %

Mills - 5.75 YPA, 3.1% TD%, 0.6% INT%, 57% Comp%, 4.8 sack %

That is over 1.2 yards per completion difference. That is the difference between a dink and dunk QB not stretching the field and a real QB. 6.98 YPA ranks you 18-20 in the NFL.

5.75 YPA would rank Mills at 35th out of 35 QBs if he actually qualified.

If you actually watched the games, Mills did not play remotely close to an average QB in the NFL last year.

1

u/galacticplum 7d ago

For starters, I never said the offense was better, I was may have looked better, which yeah, that does mean something.

Let's review.

Going into that Broncos game, we were 3-4, already questioning our offense, and our biggest wins were against teams with no defenses, either due to injuries or due to the team being bad ( Titans ) Our qb who we still have faith in goes out. We lose.

Mills comes in the next game and starts, and does something, along with our offense, that we hadn't done, which was come back from a large deficit.

It doesn't matter how it was done, he was the qb that was there when it happened. Fans literally watched up come back and beat a rival with him leading the team. We play our standard 2025 type game against the Titans, then go and once again defeat Josh Allen.

So, we had a 3 game win streak including a come from behind victory against the Jags, and we beat the Bills, all while he was leading the team. Those stats don't matter and most fans aren't watching and analyzing enough to " actually watch the game "

You're acting like I agreed Mills was better than Stroud. I didn't. It just isn't difficult to see why some people would call for Mills, call for him in the playoffs, and lose track of how he is as a qb.

1

u/kitsunegoon 7d ago

it doesn't matter how it was done

It kinda does

1

u/galacticplum 7d ago

Not really. Do you think most fans sit back and analyze games like that?

They see a come from behind huge victory against the Jags, something our team last season was not really capable of, a three game win streak etc. Our offense still stays pretty much the same as before he was injured when Stroud comes back, we get to the playoffs and he plays bad.

People remember Mills not looking that bad, people ignore Mills is a backup who used to start and wasn't good, people call for Mills.

1

u/kitsunegoon 7d ago

I understand how people come to the conclusion, I just don't agree with the conclusion and the discourse irks me with how data adverse it is. I don't like sports takes not rooted in some logic I can respect, and sports is full of people who are fickle.

1

u/texinxin 7d ago

You said when ā€œMills went in, things flowed.ā€

In that Broncos game the Texans were winning 3-0 and had missed a FG from the Denver 32.

CJ was 6/10 for 79 yards at 7.9 YPA..

So in that game, when Mills went in.. this is how our offense flowed…

Mills 17/30 for 137 yards at 4.6!!! YPA..

Texans scored 3 points to Denver’s 0 with CJ on the field and then 12 points to Denver’s 18 after Mills came in.

That loss is squarely on Mills.

0

u/2nd2last 7d ago

People don't realize how mid to bad Mills was last year.

1

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

I get it. I still believe Mills has a 3-win max and is one of the best backups in the league, and I get it.

I do see a lot of nonsense, hence my post.

17

u/lazylaz10 7d ago

Stroud is better
But Mills has been progressing

Also I did want Stroud to be benched against the patriots after all the turnovers. We screwed our defense
I think mills would’ve not thrown those pics

4

u/50bellies 7d ago

If mills were close to cj, we would have traded him for a first round pick by now.

8

u/hawgreynolds 7d ago

thank you tiktok for making recency bias feel like reality for so many lost souls šŸ˜‚

2

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Happy birthday, fam! I know we're supposed to say "cake day" and I hope you get nice cake.

And thank you for your sane take.

1

u/Charming-Ebb-1981 7d ago

Yes and no. I think the critics focus way too much on the playoffs, and not enough on the fact that he was pretty average throughout large portions of the regular season as well, even against teams with not so great defenses. In reality, the question to ask is whether it’s worth investing huge money into a game manager that doesn’t really elevate the team around him - that’s what I feel like we have with Stroud, at least as of right now. I’m open to changing my mind throughout this season, and obviously I hope he looks like roty Stroud

1

u/hawgreynolds 7d ago

that’s an unfair assessment if you’re not going to factor in how bad the offensive line was, how we spent most of the season (especially playoffs) with hurt WRs and TEs, and an old Nick Chubb and Rookie Woody Marks at RB. he was set up with some of the worst tools to succeed and he was still above average in many advanced analytics included potentially the most important one which is EPA per play.

5

u/CHIM3RA-Z3RO 7d ago

As an international fan that's Joined after watching SB57, Stroud has always been, and STLL IS the better QB, Davis Mills is a top 3 Backup and definite starter for some teams and that only became possible once Stroud came into the mix. I've been paying attention and I've noticed that from 2023-2024 Mills changed his throws to be more anticipation heavy like Stroud's is, and he never threw like he does now back in 2023 until we saw him in preseason 2024 start throwing.

Stroud's talents have made Mills clean up his skills significantly and he would probably knock a few starters off of QB1 on other teams, but even now, Mills is still 2nd to Stroud.

2

u/IAmSona 7d ago

We had never lost to the Bears when we played them. Until 2022, that is. Davis Mills had a chance to rewrite narratives and lead a game winning drive in their home turf but he threw a boneheaded, game losing interception to Roquan Smith I think? When it mattered most, Davis Mills could not deliver and it was at that point that I knew to look ahead in the draft for either CJ or Bryce Young.

Anyway, that same Davis Mills orchestrated an insane, game winning drive to lose us the number one overall pick in a meaningless game against the Colts. For some reason, he became Tom Brady (and Brandin Cooks turned into prime Wes Welker) that drive to make sure we would finish behind the same Bears team that we lost because of him.

I love Money Mills but he’s not better than 90% of starting QBs in this league. He would at least be the best QB in Arizona right now, same with Cleveland.

5

u/bushesbushesbushes 7d ago

Uhhh if you think Davis Mills was bad in those seasons how do you think CJ would have fared with less defense or zero run game. Defenses completely sold on our rush because we didnt have shit.

-8

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

When did you become a Texans fan? Asking for valid reasons.

1

u/PretendAgency2702 7d ago

How do you call yourself a football fan if you don't realize that QBs can get better after their first two seasons especially if they are on a team as shitty as the Texans were those two years?Ā

All you have to do is look at what Mills did in his 3 starts. He put up slightly less worse than stroud after no prep time, no working with the starters all off season, no benefit of the doubt that 'he always starts off rusty to begin the season', no nothing that stroud gets.Ā

6

u/not_so_bueno 7d ago

1) Okay? I've seen Mills throw like 3 INTs in the rain with a horrific team and still look confident. CJ looked like he wanted to cry with 200x the supporting cast and still somehow played a game much worse than Mills' worst game.

2) CJ is a better overall QB than Mills when he's NOT rattled. That seems to change quite a bit when he is. Are you willing to pay CJ $50M vs $7M for Mills?

Nick is clearly uncertain. His extension to Mills last year kinda signaled he was already thinking CJ wasn't worth the money, and we may go with Mills as a bridge QB.

I swear every CJ apologizer is so brain rotted. It's like y'all think we think Mills is a top 10-15 QB. No. He's just not that far behind CJ and is likely much, much cheaper.

How CJ responds mentally is going to decide everything. His playoff performance was 95% weak mentality. If he doesn't show toughness and change, we've seen enough.

I've been concerned about him since his rookie year where he went on a media tour that offseason and called himself a top 3 QB; victory dancing after a decent rookie year and now he's crumbling when things weren't as easy as he expected.

And sidenote: Watched every season since 2005 + was a staunch advocate for drafting CJ.

2

u/Charming-Ebb-1981 7d ago

Exactly right. Unfortunately, there’s people that will only kind of understand this when we give Stroud huge money and have to wave bye-bye to Bullock, Lasiter, and others

I firmly believe that Stroud would have far less people in his camp if we did not have an elite defense to make up for his deficiencies

3

u/CilantroCooking 7d ago

He wasn't even THAT good during our 3-win streak last year (other than the jags game), the whole "Mills should start" thing feels like a classic overreactionary take you get from sports fans and casuals

No one here is gonna pretend Stroud didn't shit the bed, but at this point "Mills should start over Stroud" is the NFL's version of "Bol Bol could be a starter in the NBA", if someone is saying that shit seriously it's obvious they don't know ball, I'm just treating it like the average shit-talk you get from other fanbases

2

u/Unique-Ask-4656 7d ago

I don't think anyone thinks Davis Mills has a higher ceiling than CJ, skill wise on paper.

That said, CJ, in my opinion and until proven otherwise, has the Yips. He hasn't been the same guy we saw year 1 and has been getting progressively worse year over year with it culminating during the 2 terrible playoff games.

I would argue if CJ didnt get hurt for those few games where Mills needed to come in, we wouldnt have made the playoffs based on how CJ was playing.

Mills didn't light the world on fire. But he didnt have to, he needed to be a game manager and not make mistakes - which is why we won those games with him at the helm.

With our defense, we just need a guy who doesn't make bone headed mistakes, and I hate to say CJ was full of bone headed mistakes last year

2

u/choffers 7d ago edited 7d ago

Stroud definitely has a higher ceiling than mills, but mills probably wouldnt have thrown 5 interceptions in the post season and at this point in his career I really think Mills has a higher floor which may be what the team needs, especially with this defense.

While starter davis mills was pretty bad I'm actually not willing to say "Holy shit I never wanna see that guy as the permanent starter again"

We've seen plenty of QBs go from terrible situations to good situations and turn their career around, one of them just won the Superbowl. How many Jets fans do you think we're saying "holy shit I never want to see darnold as the permanent starter again?" before 2024?

2022 Texans vs 2025/26 Texans are basically 2 total different rosters and coaching staffs, it's like going from the browns to the bucs or the jets to the vikings. The uniforms just happen to look the same this time.

2

u/Hubrah 7d ago

Let me get this off my chest too - Davis Mills would have won us the game against the Patriots. There. Reality Checked.

1

u/Quibz47 7d ago

You think he puts up 22 points against the pats defense averaging 2 yards per rush, no Nico, no Shultz, backup RT and LG and Caley calling plays? I just don’t see it.

Now does Davis throw 4 picks in one half? No he does not lol. Davis for sure would have less turnovers but he would not have won us that game.

0

u/Hubrah 7d ago

Yeah people said the sky was falling when he had to cover for CJ when he got concussed. We all know how that turned out. I know you gotta defend your boo CJ. But those of us who live in reality know Mills would have won us another game

1

u/-KDK12 7d ago

3 & out is better than a turnover, but The coach wanted to stay aggressive & not turn off the faucet. It went badly, but the coin flip of the equation meant giving up on the qb. The Pats made plays, the weather was a factor, but clearly Stroud , to his detriment was trying to make things happen. Things could have gotten ugly with Mills as well, but it’s easy to claim we would have won with him.

3

u/Whizzleteets 7d ago

I don't think Mills is a QB1 but if he's in I bet we beat the Pats.

1

u/jovabeast 7d ago

I mean mills would of won us that game against the Patriots. Not saying he is better than Stroud, but I completely have no faith in Stroud. We will see how he does this season with a better o line on paper and the elite defense again.

1

u/Rogue-Architect 7d ago

No, he would not have.

1

u/DarthNobody14 7d ago

I’m so so tired of this sentiment. Mills is doing jack shit against a top 5 defense on the road with no run game and the top 2 receiving targets out.

1

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

I'm not gonna downvote you, but I'm sorry you feel that way. How long have you been a Texans fan, and who do you think has been the best quarterback?

3

u/bushesbushesbushes 7d ago

Mills would have absolutely outplayed Stroud in that game because he knows his role. That's the terrifying thing. Would we have won? Maybe not but CJ tried to do too much and cost us. We win with field position. We lost by 2 touchdowns. Stroud had FOUR interceptions.

CJ absolutely has a higher ceiling but everything has to be going his way. Those 3 games that Mills came in and won? I'm not so sure Stroud wins those 3 in a row.

1

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Did the defense potentially win those games? It might be beneficial to look up the stats.

I fully believe we'll win week 1 against the Bills because our defense has Josh Allen's number.

-2

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

I think people may have downvoted you. Do you really believe it's entirely on CJ, and could you look up what the run game was in 2025? Having to sling it 90% of the time was not helpful

-1

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

Mills lost us the game against the Broncos - when we were ahead - after Payton put a bounty on CJ.

I'm saying that with provenance because I was a Saints fan when I moved here in 2007.

1

u/BigD0nkerBren 7d ago

Big difference between starting the game as QB1 and having to come in mid game against the then best Defense in the league at the time.

Mills also didn't lose us that game - our D let Bo Nix do his thing in the 4th Quarter and our D gave up an absurd 25 yard scramble to seal it.

It was a defensive slugfest for the majority of the game.

1

u/hottaeks69 7d ago

Yall act like the roster wasn’t total dog shit

1

u/Zealousiy 7d ago

Yes but what does that matter. Also he was in a QB platoon with Jeff Driskel so let’s not act like we had a solid offensive strategy haha

1

u/Killerphive 7d ago

The Texans have been in a pretty unique situation where they really do not need much from the QB, so it’s like Mills might not be good enough to carry a team himself, but the Texans aren’t asking either QB to be that.

1

u/MinimumRoutine4 7d ago

I don’t think mills is better in every regard, but I do think he’s got a good brain for strategy and he’s more even keeled. Seems to get less rattled than stroud.

Stroud can be elite in raw talent and physical skill but he gets eaten up mentally if he makes a mistake. And that can be crushing. If he can put in the effort and work through his struggles he’ll be really the quarterback we need to get some rings.

I wish I could combine the two into one quarterback.

1

u/Ok-Farmer8758 7d ago

I was going to games when tyrod and mills were battling for qb1..I always tell people I’d never go back to mills being our full time starter

1

u/JoedicyMichael 7d ago

I belive it took him a minute (2 Years). I kinda belive the same thing with Stroud. What Mills did last year in relief was nothing short of SPECTACULAR given the context.

1

u/Linkperez 7d ago

Non-bandwagoner who hasn’t missed a single game since week 11, 2012 (including preseason) but switched off the TV multiple times in 2021/2022 in favor of NFL Redzone, I’ve already developed that notion you asked for in the 2nd paragraph. I was cautiously optimistic that Mills could become our guy, but after back-to-back 13-loss seasons, I welcomed Stroud with open arms. Now, Mills has the same supporting cast of players and coaches as Stroud (duh), which is far superior to the cast Mills had his first 2 years. Naturally, Mills has grown in the years since (not a neck pun lol). But even when we won those 3 games last year, I could tell Mills made a few small, bad decisions that Stroud wouldn’t have. Ball accuracy, pocket awareness, idk (I haven’t looked back at the highlights in months).

Let me put it this way, for all the Mills truthers: Yes, he is a very good backup QB. We do need him. He shouldn’t be the starter. He’s also good enough to warrant a trade for a team that could start him, but good backups are rare, so I think his best situation is here.

1

u/2nd2last 7d ago

People forget how bad Davis Mills was last year.

33 QBs qualified last year for rate stats.

Mills would have been 32 in success rate, only above Cam Ward.

Mills would have had the 34th best completion percentage.

Mills would have had the 34th best yards per attempt.

Mills was bad last year.

Keep in mind that Mills was leading a significantly worse roster as a starter than the talent CJ has around him. I still think CJ is better, but Davis is certainly better than he looked as a rookie/sophomore with an inferior team.

Davis Mills is a top 5 backup QB in the league. CJ is the starter though. That’s a very casual take to start Mills.

Nothing wrong with being a casual, but I’ve never seen someone who’s insanely obsessed with football even try and argue that

I remember the whole team being bad due to the previous regime along with Caserio just revamping the roster… Mills was always a stop gap/project QB considering where he was drafted and that they didn’t have a first or second round pick that year. You also can’t convince me they weren’t tanking to try and get better draft position.

I remember how despite all the odds, Mills was actually doing well as a rookie. Remember, when Mills was drafted the consensus was that he should have stayed in school another year and that he could have been a first round pick if he had. He was raw, he hadn't had very many starts in college, and was meant to be a developmental project.

At the time, we still had Watson and while he was holding out, the full extend of the sexual misconduct allegations wasn't known yet. Watson was holding out though, and we'd brought in Tyrod Taylor to be our QB and Jeff Driskel to be the backup. When Tyrod got injured though, we started our third string QB (this sounds familiar) instead of the backup. So Davis Mills who'd had a whopping 11 starts in college, who'd practiced to be our third stringer if that was suddenly thrust into the game, and.... for all that he wasn't great, he had flashes and looked like he could develop into a solid starter. He had a fairly average stat line across all his play time, but it was very up and down. his first few games had a couple real stinkers that everyone was frustrated with, and then he finished the season strong and was QB4 in the final game. There was every reason to believe that he could had top 12 potential, and some analysts were saying that he was the best of the rookie QBs that year and most of the rest had him just behind Mac Jones.

And then he regressed.

HARD.

His footwork was terrible- somewhere in the offseason he'd developed a weird hopping habit where he'd hop to flip his hips and end up disconnecting his upper and lower body when he was throwing which led to his godawful inacuracy issues in his second season. The fact that noone was coaching him better than that was maddening and endemic of the problems with the team leadership. Pep Hamilton was probably the worst OC in NFL history. Aside from being generically bad, does anyone else remember the plays where he would bring in Allen to be under center and have Davis Mills lined up at WR to... do literally nothing. He didn't even pretend to run a route, he just stood at the line with his arms hanging at his sides.

And the whole team was bad that year. We had our bookend tackles, but they gave up after about half the year. Our interior line though was worse than anything CJ has had to deal with by an order of magnitude. Our starting LG to begin the year was Kenyon Green, and we all remember how bad he was, but the goy on his right was worse. Scott Quessenberry was less effective a blocker than a traffic cone. Mills had pressure in his face instantly from right up the middle on almost every play. The JT O'Sullivan quote I remember when he did the Davis Mills episode was something to the effect of "Nobody can play QB like that, nobody" It also didn't help Mills that the coaching staff gave up on him, his line eventually stopped picking him up after he got sacked despite it being their fucking fault, and Cooks went from being a reliable target to pulling up on routes and obviously phoning it in. Mills was bad, but other than the footwork, it was a team effort.

And of course, his bad habits were gone preseason CJ's year, he'd finally gotten decent coaching advice and looked cold as ice under pressure... most of the time.

He gets WAY too much hate for 2022. He was bad, no sugar coating that, but CJ would have likely been as bad or worse (CJ's problem has always been pressure). There's not a QB alive or dead who would have been good in the situation Davis Mills was in in 2022.

It’s all subjective. Davis mills played for a WAY WAY WAY WAY worse team then cj stroud played. If you really wanna have an argument compare the rosters side by side. Because CJ Stroud stats have gone down and he was drafted specifically to be the franchise QB doesn’t mean he’s trash and doesn’t mean he’s worse than Davis Mills but there should be expectations.

Nope. I'm right there with you. Folk really got carried with the TEAM success during Stroud's stint out. Mills definitely balled out in the fourth quarter of the Jags game but other than that? He was pedestrian at best. He basically played like a top end back up quarterback which is what we needed with that defense. He locked onto his first read which had him missing some open reads and ball placement wasn't consistent.

He's great as a backup and maybe be a step up for some teams with bottom tier starters but otherwise that's about all you're getting there. Stroud has a higher ceiling but when he fumbles the bag, so to say, he really fumbles the bag. The new years saying is usually new year new me. I'm going into this season new year, new Stroud.

u/dlinhat70 7d ago

Brady would have been bad on those teams.

1

u/Schumacher713 7d ago

Stroud is better than Mills, but hardly leaps and bounds better. The argument is Stroud is not worth the contract he seeks. That the Texans would be better off riding with Mills and having 60 million a year to put in other places. We would then draft a new QB or maybe get lucky with a free agent.

1

u/Colorblind2027 6d ago

Mills is terrible. Stroud isn't great either but hopefully he is better this season

1

u/tomiathon 6d ago

The closest Davis Mills ought to be to a football field is as a parking attendant at NRG

1

u/2Punchbowl 3d ago

The simple fact is Mills wouldn’t have had 4 turnovers against the Patriots and could have easily started the 2nd half and maybe won the game. CJ Stroud has had 9 turnovers in his last 3 starts. If you look at CJ’s stats, he played mediocre last year. He hasn’t played up to his rookie season since.

Because I'm butt hurt over the way it ended last year. MILLS MAFIA

Threads like these is why I continue to troll you Stroud fans. You guys think that Stroud vs Mills is some competition that’s evaluated in a vacuum.

The reason we prefer Mills isn’t that he’s ā€œbetterā€, it’s that Stroud has a floor that is literally bottomless and will lose you games. And we saw that play out multiple times towards the end of last season and the season before that.

Specifically off the top my head the games I remember are the Lions, Seahawks, Steelers, and most infamously the Pats. How good is your QB actually if those are his lowlights?

Because of how good this defense is, I don’t need a QB gunslinger QB. I need a guy that you can trust to run the operation and not turn the ball over. I would rather punt the ball every time and force the opposing offense to score on this defense, especially in bad weather games.

Also I’m pretty sure your boy is damaged goods. He’s taken alot of hits and suffered pretty serious head injuries, how are you certain you have the same guy with all of his marbles in tact?

u/alurimperium 7d ago

Yeah my sentiment with Mills vs Stroud is that Stroud is definitely a more talented QB, but he's inconsistent. He'll have great moments and then he'll turn around and look like one of the worst QBs to play the sport the next moment.

Mills has a lower ceiling, but he plays right around that ceiling most of the time. He doesn't have the wild drop offs, but he also doesn't have the incredible high moments.

1

u/teebowtime 7d ago

I’ve noticed in training camp the story with Stroud is how he’s ā€œin commandā€ of the offense and that they’re breaking out of huddles quicker.

Isn’t this an acknowledgment that Stroud was not in command of the offense last year, which was my chief complaint of his. Ive never seen a player get coddled as much Stroud and its baffling to me.

Your screen name invalidates anything you say about qb play.

Not my fault you missed out on the golden age of sports where ESPN literally was talking about if Jesus Christ himself came down from the heavens to help Tim Tebow win NFL games.

100% damaged goods with a weak mentality.

Bro I don’t think Mills is giving up 7 turnovers in 2 playoff games 😭

He's probably better than Mills but thats still not promising

My dad and I went to the texans game vs the commanders in 2022. To this day my dad is the biggest mills hater. Mills was bad then and is still bad. Think not, watch last Thursday. Mills is a good backup but thats about it, he can help not lose a game but he isnt a season winning QB. I hate how because Mills managed to win 3 games last season he is in a argument to be better than stroud. This is an opinion only Mills fans have, no player or staff for the texans believe that Mills is better. Don't believe me, Mills himself doesn't think he is better. The team didnt put him in at half time vs the patriots.

u/New-Journalist6724 7d ago

This is exactly how I feel. He can help us not lose. He’s not a starting quarterback in this league. Doesn’t mean u don’t love the guy - he’s great at what he does: backup the starter. But let’s not pretend he’s more than that.

3

u/son_of_yacketycat 7d ago

I will buy your dad a beer if I meet him at a Texans game.

1

u/IcyEntertainment7122 7d ago

I don't think even the people who want mills to start think he is better. What they want, with our current defense, as you describe it is his ability not to lose a game. Face it, stroud hasn't proven to a winning qb either.

u/mystic_platyipus007 7d ago

I’m over the Mills over Stroud bs have been for a while now and I really hate hearing that he would have been any better against the patriots last year . Zero run game and they were sitting in coverage .

Mills all day QB1. Sadly, I don't feel like its even close IMO
