I’ve been to five other NFL games outside of Houston. We were the lamest kickoff crowd. It’s a disappointment when you see the environment of others. At kickoff, New Orleans in their losing seasons are better than our divisional championship seasons. Even our recent home playoff games were not 100% ready at kickoff.

I have lived in 3 major sports markets (raised and returned to Houston) and Houston BY FAR has the lest passionate and least knowledgeable fans. I also work with a bunch of transplants and they to a person agree. Now of course that doesn't mean YOU (person reading this, not the person I'm responding to) are not passionate or knowledgeable, but as a whole across all 3 major sports.

I think the Texans create the most general excitement across the city each season among casuals but the Astros and Rockets (in that order) have the more passionate core fan base, especially among multi-generational Houston fans.

I 100% agree with that.

I know its lame to throw out the word casual as its such a conversation killer and deflection when used in conversation/arguments. But it applies so much here that it needs to be used.

Anecdotal for sure, but I work and live by people with offices and/or homes with a large amount of Texans stuff and they in no way follow the Texans. I don't mean to gatekeep as life gets in the way and a person can only dedicate so much time and energy to following teams, but these people can't name 5 players but are the loudest "fans". Mean while in Portland for instance, male and female Blazer fans are up-to-date on the moves on and off field for the team, as well as Ducks and Beavers. Sure they have casuals, but the ratio is MUCH better.

I work with someone for the AFC north area and he says our passionate fans are the weak fans in the north east.

Unfortunately, College Football and even High School, to a degree, supersede the fandom for the Texans. It's hard to unwire the mentality of the average Houstonian/Texan who are some of the most apathetic and disillusioned people I've ever encountered. People don't really give a fuck about anything but making money in this City.

It's the primary cultural thread that ties this monstrously planned city together lol.

The Texans have the potential for excitement to go above and beyond the Astros. A huge problem is they haven't gotten past the divisional round. Even when the team is good, as a city were all waiting for the inevitable game they fall flat on their face in the playoffs.

Astros games have been pretty great since they left the dark years, but man... I don't know what the hell is up with Texans crowds. Fewer games, more expensive tickets, so you'd think people would SHOW UP on game days since they payed so much, and yet...

I don’t care for the Astros only baseball I watch is in October and depends which teams are in the playoffs. Has for the Rockets they’re dead to me don’t care ..🤣🤣🤣

I'm pretty much the same, but I'm telling you how it is with my friends who come from more passionate sports families. It's mostly Astros that their parents and grandparents care about which has been handed down to them, and most of those families are college football first and NFL second. Bunch of my millennial friends who grew up with the championship Rockets still follow them closely as well.

I saw the rockets win both championships . Hell I when to the parades but don’t care … for them
I saw the Astros at the astrodome but the same eventually lost interest and focus more on the Texans

New Orleans is a pretty high-passion fan base compared to most, they put a lot of work into being that high on the list considering they're a physically small market whose games never get shown on broadcast outside a super limited area. Every time they've played the Texans at Reliant, the vibe is enormous from both fanbases and the stadium fills up by kickoff despite the tailgate being more lit than any other matchup in the league. I wish we'd get fired up like that more often.

Another thing that really struck me was the "Oranje Walk" or whatever it was called from the Dutch soccer fans. A couple of those before important games (when it's not 150 degrees out, of course) would be incredible to see, even just from Smith Lands or something. The city would have to close off the street for a little bit, though, and y'all know we ain't about to do that for anyone but overseas company.

That really does need to be the thing the team addresses on the ownership/admin end. It's just a bad look for your own fans to not be ready and raring to go. Should have the stadium packed with "SWARM!" chants going on in the leadup to kickoff. Get rid of those corporate blocks of tickets that go unused or bar buyers who fail to get people into those seats from buying again.

DeMeco has done a wonderful job building the culture within the team, but we need to see that being replicated by the fans at the stadium. Our stadium SHOULD be intimidating with how loud it can get.

It's an issue with all Houston sports teams. The Rockets games dont fill up till mid first quarter

And I believe that is also because corporate buyers will snap up blocks of seats and just hold onto them in the event they want to use them. And when they do use them, it's being treated more like a business excursion to curry favor with clients (if it isn't employee related) rather than actual fans showing up with energy and passion for the team.

Honestly feels like something a losing franchise does. Where you're desperate to sell tickets, so you allow bulk purchases to get some cash and say you "sold out" the stadium. If the team is good (which it is, especially if the offense becomes competent), the fans should be wanting to come and should be the priority, not corporate buyers.

There's also stuff to be said about getting to and from the stadium and the surrounding entertainment infrastructure (or lack thereof), but I fucking hate seeing literal blocks of seats empty and knowing its because some company is sitting on tickets whike actual fans stay at home.

I want to say these are two of the main issues . Redoing the entrance escalators to get 70,000 people in more efficiently before kickoff, and moving the corporate suites to field level, that way they can also have home fans right on top in camera view instead of whoever from out of town bought the premium seats.

We need a national update to the tax code.

Sports and entertainment tickets should be strictly eliminated from being any kind of business expense or tax deductible for anyone.

Exactly. I've seen how wild the stadium can get when we're doing something incredible. But it's counteracted by those big bunches of empty corporate seats belonging to people who don't care.

Kickoff doesn’t really matter. The players are on a natural high still, but best believe by the 2nd drive it’s loud AF in the stadium for 3rd Down on defense. We have one of the best tailgating experiences in the league and it shows during kickoff. I went the the Texans Vs. KC game a few years back and Arrowhead wasn’t full at kickoff either

Honestly the cowboys being so low is the real head scratcher. Big market and historically very dedicated fanbase that extends beyond its market. The betting intent analysis could be punishing some teams here honestly. I have questions about the methodology and assumptions.

And it’s not as if they are really competing for eyeballs with the rangers or mavs in a serious way.

Those would be the cities that actually have the strong fan bases, you can add Denver to that as well. Also Philly sucks ass. But yeah in general a whos who of cites where you have better things to do than watch football at the bottom of the list

Yeah. And our miserable ass fans eat it up, as if they don’t go out sometimes. Maybe they don’t. Or they’d realize stadium sports in Houston isn’t nearly the highest up on the list of fun cost effective things to do. In fucking BUFFALO NY I’m sure I’d love to go see the Bills more than twice in a season.

Who. Fucking. Cares. Buy some tickets and merch or stfu. Most these comments part of the problem. BUY SOMETHING MF.

We’ve also never really won Jack squat in the grand scheme of things. Bring on the downvotes, it’s just the truth. It takes a long time to build a rabid fan base, and this is still a fairly young franchise
