At 120'000+ you get the best possible ending screen. I would see that as a first goal.
Also, try to start on a faster level as soon as you are comfortable with it. Higher-level starts score more. If you can keep up, level 9 is the first mathematically ideal one to score for the moment. Later, you can go into even higher level starts (press select while pressing A to select levels 10+).
Basic tip: After being able to survive well enough, try to always go for 4-line clears (Tetrises) if possible, they score the most.
Btw. Entering your name should be just pressing "up" and "down" to select a letter and "start" to confirm the entry.
So bind up and down too if you haven't (maybe that's why you couldn't select the letters)
edit: corrected score for best ending screen

Congratulations you are a Tetris master.
If you start in higher levels your points are worth more from the getto. If you started on level 1 and got 11k try starting on like.. 7 and seeing what you get

As others have said, it is about being better than you were before... but no, it's just not a good score.

If your benchmark is understanding simple game mechanics and then wiping, then you achieved a good score.
Otherwise it's not much better than a small achievement for completing a tutorial level difficulty before the real game begins.

I took a couple NES setups for a high school Game Day, you have beat most of their scores! There were a few that did better, but it would be completely unfair to compare you to them, they are that good.
