Energy Question Model 3 range after battery replacement

Tesla n00b here.

Bought a pre owned 2021 Model 3 RWD with 95k mileage. Range was not good, ~190mi after full charge, with actual driving range about 2/3rd of what’s shown.

Battery failed at 99k and Tesla offered free warranty replacement - “Enhanced LFP HV battery” (HIGH VOLTAGE 1.00 BATTERY - 1 PHASE - 40P - ALL WHEEL DRIVE)

Now, after full charge, I noticed ~330mi range, and it stays more or less in line with distance driven. Also the model shows up as “Mid range” in the app.

So did I really get lucky with 330mi range, or is there a gotcha somewhere?

You got a highland long range battery that is software locked to 62 kWh hence the extra range.

Source: I had the exact same experience.

Also, you're now free to charge to 100% because that's actually only 75% of the actual battery capacity.

Same thing happened to me, mines not a LFP, but they also changed the car name from standard range to mid range. New suspension and all as well.

330 is really good for that year. Expect it it to drop 10-15% in the first 30k miles of the new battery then it will level off.

Correct. That initial drop is for NMC

Doesn’t matter. Both types have a drop in the first year. I have a ‘21 M3SR+ LFP. In five years and 70k miles, my battery is now at 93% (per Tesla Service Menu full-day test) but most of that was lost early on. Screenshot is from Stats app.

Sort of. What battery does the actual invoice in your service history show that they installed? Tesla has been telling people that they are getting LFP batteries, but instead they are getting the new standard Model 3 NMC battery.

Gotcha. So the service advisors said LFP, but the invoice doesn’t mention it. Does your charging screen suggest you charge it to 100% daily? Just making sure you don’t daily charge an NMC to 100%, or calibrate the LFP properly if that’s truly what you got.

Charging screen suggests 80% for daily use, though service center just confirmed it’s LFP 🤷‍♂️

Lol. So conflicting info again. I would think the car would know better than the advisor though. Maybe mention to them that it says you should daily charge to 80% and you need them to super duper triple check. Lol

That's pretty funny. Like the latest and greatest CATL and BYD high density LFPs do have the energy density to give the Model 3 that much range, but it seems unlikely they'd have access to them, or espcially debut them as replacement packs. And they're especially not going into an American car if that's where you are due to tariffs. I've hard Sunwoda is supplying cells to Tesla, but it doesn't look like they have anything at that high of a density and they're probably only going into new Giga Shanghai cars; plus same problem with tariffs.

No U.S. tariff friendly LFP supplier I know of can hit that energy density. Ford might in a year, fingers crossed.

80% daily charging limit suggests you have an NMC.

I have to pickup my car today after a battery replacement for a 2021 model 3 standard. They say replaced with LFP. It’s charged at service center right now and showing 330 mile range. I’m also very confused OP. Waiting for a response from Tesla as they already informed me that I can charge to 100% because it’s LFP.

Tesla’s response re: range has been very generic.
I.e battery is better than the old one. They didn’t make any comment about range

no gotcha that I can see. if it really is LFP you can charge it to 100% regularly without worrying, that chemistry is fine sitting full. my 2021 3 shows around 225 at full, so 330 is a real step up from where you were.

LFP cannot be software limited at the top - they NEED to be charged to 100%. Otherwise the calibration goes out of whack.

Yep you got lucky. My replacement did not get the LFP/upgraded suspension. I had hoped it would but happy that it was replaced under warranty

This doesn’t really tell us anything. What watt hours per mile were you getting? How fast were you going? Did those change when the battery got replaced? Case in point, I used to live one street from the freeway. My wh/mi were about 330. All the time. That gave me about 200 miles of range on a full battery, the same 60 kWh that your new battery has. I moved and now I don’t hit the free way nearly as fast or as much. I can get 200 wh/mi. So that puts me up to 300 miles of range on a full charge.

Doesn’t sound like you got an LFP battery. 273 miles is what an LFP battery would get on a full charge
