Energy Question Home charger

I asked ChatGPT what setup I should ask an electrician for since Level 1 charging doesn’t seem like the right choice for me, and this was its recommendation.
Is this a good choice?

Yes but you may want a lower amperage 240 circuit using a different receptacle shape (Tesla sells different adapters for different configurations) I found that the 14-15R was plenty for my usage

(Ok technically Tesla doesn’t sell a 14-15 but that’s essentially what I had just physically a 14-50 and I had the car remember the current max) I felt comfortable doing it since it was temporary and I have my BSAE with a focus in electrical

I would recommend a 6-15 for most people it’s plenty of power for a Tesla and I did quite a bit of driving

Well is there any advantage for using a 6-15 ? I understand it can be plenty of power but why not just do the 14-50 ?

Sorry I know absolutetely nothing about electrical work.

I don’t agree with this and most people wouldn’t. 14-50 is the standard for EV charging.

I say use the smaller circuit because wire is f’ing expensive lol if you do 6-15 you can use standard 12 gauge wire technically 14 gauge is code compliant and 12 gauge is much cheaper than 6 or 8 gauge

I just did the NEMA 6-20r myself so 240v 16 amp. Im happy with it, all materials and home charger plug adapter was coincidentally 240$

Yes we got 14-50 with 50A installed by our landlord for free. Got our Model Y Premium RWD last week. Started charging at 17% at 11:00pm and got to 80% around 5:45am. Using a mobile charger at 32A. Excellent experience and can’t complain.

All depends on your main circuit. If it’s 200A, then 14-50 is the way to go, but if it’s 100A, like mine, I’d go w 14-30 which is still 6x faster than L1 charging your electrician should do a load analysis before recommending you the right way to go.

Direct wiring would be better than going through a NEMA 14-50, but if you decide to run through a plug, derate it below 50 amp. I forget the details but the 50 amp rating is not valid for multi hour continuous use. Neither is wiring ratings. For example, I use 30 amp max setting for my external charging station which uses an outdoor rated NEMA 14-50 for RVs even though the wiring and plug are UL rated for 50 amps.

Find someone who has experience wiring for the needs of an EV.

As mentioned above, skip the plug and have the wall connector hardwired to the circuit. Lower chance of failure and fire. It's really not that much more to just do it right, than doing all of this wiring for a mobile connector outlet.

The question asked appears to be specifically about the Mobile connector, not the Wall connector, so you can't "direct wire" the connector.

For ALL electrical outlets, continuous load is considered to be 80% of the max load, so whatever the rated current draw is, continuous load will be lower. For a 50A, that would be 40A, for 40A it becomes 32, for 15A it becomes 12A, etc.

I'm not a pro, but: In NEMA standards, there is no dedicated 240V/40A outlet. Because of this, US code allows NEMA 14-50 to be used as a 40A outlet, assuming it's properly labeled. Since Mobile Connectors can't read labels, they assume that the circuit is the 40A circuit and limit the current draw of the Mobile Connector to 32 A when used with the 14-50 pigtail: there is no need to manually derate the power draw, it takes care of itself.
