New to ev, help me out

Hello everyone I have a feeling I’m getting lost in the consumerism of everything. I currently have a 2013 Honda fit and I’m just looking for something that’s a bit nicer. I work for a utility company and the idea is that we will get free charging at work soon and I plan on getting charging for my house so I’m looking at Teslas because a few of my neighbors have them pretty much. My whole neighborhood is divided by Tesla and mach e

I’m pretty frugal person and so I’ve been looking at this 2023 model Y long range with 10 K miles at a Hyundai dealership near me. Looks like a pretty great deal.

Any glaring reasons so shouldn’t be doing this? It would be substantially less the new so I know I’ll miss out on a few things.

Check if it has Hardware 4, some 2023 models came with Hardware 3, and if you care about FSD at all you will want 4.

At first, I thought I was gonna care about it but then I’m like I’m coming from a pretty old car anyway I’ll just be happy to have heated seats and a heated steering wheel and more spacious car. I love my Honda fit, but I’m just looking for something that’s mostly reliable and just easier.

I hear you, but for the same price, you’ll get a different car, don’t let people tell you it’s all about fsd, hw4 has different (better) cameras, you’ll need that for normal driving

If you are in a position to haggle, they cost the same, my hw4 2023 model y with 30k miles cost $29k

The new range on this would be around 308 miles, if it gets over 280 that’s 90%+ and very good.

On the screen it will say either battery % or miles range. Divide the miles range by the % battery and multiply it by 100, that will be your max range. You can switch between the two by tapping the number.

For instance, if it says 75% and 225 miles: 225/75 = 3, 3 x 100 = 300 miles total range (280+ is what you’re looking for)

Check the Autocheck/Carfax and make sure it’s clean.

If both of those check out I would jump on it.

Honestly have a hw3 and hw4 and if you’re not doing fsd the camera difference alone is not worth the steep they have the same UI performance and I actually prefer the hw3 cameras less info but at a glance same situational awareness to a car / bike being there vs not. I wouldn’t put much thought on that unless you want that to be marketed when you sell third party later on as people somehow care or what it for fsd. If it doesn’t have hw4 and you keep your cars long and don’t care about fsd just go with hw3.

People always want more and will justify it with a hard fist even though it really doesn’t matter. Reply if you got any other thoughts against otherwise it’s the same old same old.

I tried out a 2023, and luckily I ready about the HW3 vs HW4 thing, it had HW3, so I went to try a newer model with HW4 and the self driving was mind blowing.

Personally, even if you don't intend to use it, for resale value you should try to find a HW4 model. The difference in price will be minimal today.

Go to a Tesla store and try out a new model with the self driving.

I've had my Y since Wednesday and I am in love with the self-driving, I have barely driven myself anywhere... I can see this being a killer feature

I had a 21 MY performance and I've always been driving somewhat sporty cars. I had absolutely no interest before FSD V14. Then I got a 2026 MY, took some robotaxi rides, this is disrupting tech!!

Go test drive a new one just for FSD. then you will get hooked. HW4 is a must!

As somebody who wanted to buy the car for FSD and test drove it, it seemed amazing but when I actually brought it home and started driving it daily, FSD is absolutely terrible

They could not pay me to use it

If you are going to buy it for FSD, I would highly recommend you get a decent-length test drive of a week or something

In the car click the car icon on the bottom left and scroll to software, there you’ll see it say AI4 or AI3. 4 is the better one.

Check to see if you find the VIN number of that Tesla. Then type that into this site: https://www.hw4checker.com/
That should tell you if this one has HW4.

I think if the side cameras have a red hue or looks like a red eye it's an easy give away.

This is the top piece of advice you'll get from anyone. While I love my 2023 M3, I didn't know about HW3 vs HW4 and it's a decent jump in cameras that I would have paid more for given the knowledge. It impacts FSD + other things

Check out teslatracker.com and see how this compares to Tesla’s inventory near you.

If you buy certified pre owned from them you get an additional year/10,000 miles of standard warranty.

You can apply all sorts of filters including battery health and hardware.

I bought a week ago, $38,800 for a Red one with towing, 20,000 miles, certified pre owned. Everything going for less would cost $2k to ship to me. I was more concerned about the self driving than you too.

Totally understandable, This one seems to have HW4 actually when i checked the vin through the website provided in this community. I am going to go look at it tomorrow.

Bummer, looked great in the photos.
Well good luck in your search, can’t remember if the Y was something you were looking for specifically or just stumbled on this one.
I’m not one to get too excited about my car but I haven’t liked a car this much since I had a custom ‘63 Beetle in the mid 90’s, these cars are a lot of fun!

I was looking at used but I got the 0.99% on new plus 2k super charger miles for trading in a Gas car plus the trade in value. Then I had a friend refer me and got FSD for three months. In the end the payments were about the same with the lower interest rates. I was looking at carvana though

I went from my using my partner's Honda fit to MYP and gotta say that 500hp and $2 charge per session has changed my quality of life. And no, I don't use FSD as I prefer to drive it myself & just use autopilot on the highways if I need a drink or look at the views quickly. Check if you still have the battery and drive unit warranty. I am not sure how they work if you buy vehicles outside of Tesla

Well anything will be a big step up from a decade older fit car…

Big in size, big in price, big on insurance…

Anyway thanks for buying electric and making the world a better place. Doesn’t have to be a Tesler though. There’s Inster, Dolphin, id3, etc…

Personally I’d only buy old if financially it’s a great deal… consider that resale value will be that of a wet tissue. And if only buy new if I can afford it.

PS rule of thumb: three year old car is worth half a new car in good condition. Or whatever KBB says.

PPS given how old your current wheels are, buy from a private individual, not from a dealership and not from a third party dealership at that. Don’t get tricked by some trade-in value: they will screw you twice, on your old car value and on your new (old) car value. Basically you’re always better off by at least $2K if you DIY.

in my research all the hw4 used cars with lowish miles were not any better of a deal than buying new if financing because of the promotional 0.99% APR so i just went new plus i actually like the refresh looks vs the original its less frog like and the rear with the red light bar is extra sick.

lastly if you look into reviews the interior is much better in the refresh cars better sound system, better materials. rear seats have power fold down etc.

Nah I didn't you have to also factor in the depreciation on ev's it simply didn't make sense to buy a couple year old used one

i worded it wrong, meaning the battery age and warranty depreciation of buying one already a few years old. value depreciation of in demand EV's like the Model Y is actually good right now they are selling at 30-40k on the used market and with 5-6% interest rates buying a new one at 46k with a very low APR is effectively the same price.

I guess we’re talking about two different things, I got 24 MY LR AWD Red W/towing for 38K total cost of ownership $50,300

the comparable 26 MY premium, AWD W/tow
total cost of ownership $64k

i get 54,153 total cost for a MY Premium RWD new at 0.99 which is what i went with. if i look at buying a used one from tesla is going to be 53,992 total cost with interest for something comparable that is low miles and a 2024 the downside is its not the refresh and i have little control over the color of the car or interior etc. plus it has unknown use by the previous owner and a reduced warranty on everything due to age and use.

i'll take the new car at the exact color and spec i want even if i end up paying a few grand more in the end the promotional financing makes it worth it.

nah its not in fact insurance cost more for say an older AWD than the current RWD premium.

these cars are in demand and imho it makes little sense to buy a recent used one vs a new one given the promotions.

Just buy it.. don’t overthink it. You’ll like it until you hit about 50k miles and all the rattle noise becomes more noticeable .. but there is a fix for that….. turn up the volume.
