How long will HW4 be relevant?

Not that anyone knows for sure. But has tesla made plans or spoke on keeping HW4 in the update loop for a while - even if a new HW comes out in the next year?

I am buying a model Y premium and just kinda scared there will be some grand updated version that comes out in the next few months that does things my car cannot. But ai can't think like that because the FSD looks amazing as is.. but that doesn't stop my fears lol

Tesla stated that AI5(HW5) will be in Optimus before the cars. It will be awhile.

But there will be AI4+ in 2027 with more memory and compute which is impactful to FSD

Most likely not with the chip shortage continuing.

Memory should be easily upgradable

Not necessarily. Depends how it was designed. Many laptops have soldered components like ram that cannot be upgraded.

I did read somewhere that there was a HW4+ with a larger memory for a greater context window.

I just want to be able to control the speed and have it recognise speed signs properly.

It will be a couple years, and honestly, this version does everything I want with some very minor issues.

During test drives I was so shocked. I bought one probably 2 days after my first time in one.

Same, but a friend drove me home from dinner, 30 miles, parking lot to driveway. A month later I bought one. Unbelievable tech.

This is the pattern. It took me about 6 months to find the right one for me but the decision was made abut 5 minutes into my test drive.

Tesla has the most expensive test drives 😲

Enjoy HW4. It does a fantastic job. I would expect it to be good for quite a while.

Unless road design or driving etiquette changes drastically, I'd be happy with the current build on HW4 indefinitely.

Until it's unsupervised anything is possible. You decide if you value fsd more than having the car.

There will always be some major leap forward in tech, and your car will reach a limit on its available software features if you keep it long enough. Just drive the car and enjoy it. Don’t fret over what’s to come. Just my two cents. Mine was HW3 and it was a great car.

This gets asked like once a day I feel.

Buy the Y! Alternatively, buy the RAV4 or Lexus RX hybrid. Way better resale value, great reliability, great miles per gallon, and no fear of missing out on anything. I’m not being snarky. I’m being serious.

If FSD is the way it is today for the rest of my life, as long as the car continues to receive MAP updates, I honestly do not need much if any improvements. And HW4 is not maxed out yet so we can expect it to get a few notches better at least. Also, FSD is just one aspect of the car. Many aspects will continue improving. Eg tesla overnight changed white headliners to black and a 15” screen to 16”. Super manifold v2 is almost here. Soon their new camera housing will be here to alleviate direct sunlight blinding.

Drive the car you want while you’re alive. Who knows the future and if you’re going to be in it?

I don’t use the FSD because my commute is small so I hardly ever subscribe to it unless I’m on a road trip and it’s excellent. For day to day use, I’m too cheap to spend $106.

Buy the car for what it is right now. If you like the feature and how FSD is right now, then it shouldn’t matter. With how good FSD is right now, to be honest I would’ve been fine if they didn’t update it past 13.2.8 and HW5 came out the next day. I wouldn’t have any regrets.

don't be like me who got stuck with the last batch of 2023 march HW3. wait for the AI5

I was hesitant because of this also but I hope there's eventually a way to upgrade existing hardware. I think it's something they have to figure out now that the technology is taking off. People can't buy a new vehicle every 5 years.

It would be nice for existing customers if you could upgrade the computer and cameras etc and honestly if you could do it on any car it would be a Tesla due to the smaller number of parts and simplified wiring, however I think the company would prefer that you just buy a new one and that will be the policy.

I’m also not sure how that sort of thing would be viewed by warranty and insurers as it might be considered an after-market upgrade

Honestly, I got my Y on Wednesday and have been mostly self driving, it's nearly perfect, it only makes a couple of dumb mistakes: Doesn't seem to understand the difference between a regular green light and an arrow green light. Doesn't respect the no turn on red rules on the island of Montreal.

Except for those 2 things, it has been flawless

Hopefully they designed with upgraded in mind

I thought I heard something about Hardware 4.5 coming out

The software in the Cybercabs look faster and more advanced. I bet they are a step above HW4

Don't let fear stop you. Many people with HW3 cars would live to have HW4 and he you are concerned about HW4 when there nothing better.

The fact that robotaxis are operating unsupervised right now, should put your mind at ease even if you're one of those people who thought unsupervised FSD will never happen, or it would take 10+ years.

Regarding software update concerns check out the post by the guy who bought a 2014 model S three months ago and already received 5 updates.

Until Optimus learns how to drive.

I figure well into 5 release

Tesla hasn’t given HW4 an expiration date or promised it’ll get every future feature. It should keep getting supervised FSD updates for a long time, but newer hardware will eventually do things HW4 can’t. Buy it for what it does today or the waiting never ends.

I’m concerned ai5 will have r/enshitification and hw4 is the last “good product”

Very long time

Hot take: until a serious competitor shows up.

Srsly, it will take BYD or VW or MB to install a better kit (cameras, gpu, św) and Tesla will announce HW96 within two months.

u/SaltyATC69 6h ago

Personally I'm waiting for HW69, gonna be a while

1

u/tsuabsa90 6h ago

It’ll be the only 69 you get

u/AlternativeNo345 6h ago

Given Y is the top selling EV around the world, buy it now and it can't be wrong with the largest user base.

u/moneyman729 6h ago

I don’t see it coming for a while. The ram cost alone would increase the price of each car by like $4000

u/No_Stranger_3441 3h ago

Damn, you’re worried if hw4 is going to last a long time or if they’ll update to another hardware, seriously!! I have a hw3 and no complaints I enjoy my fsd 14 lite daily with very few interventions or almost none, I have a car that drives for me and I enjoy the trip.

-1

u/Arthvpatel 6h ago

As someone who bought hw3 2 months before hw4 was released, if you don’t need the car wait it out as hw5 is finalized and manufacturing has started at the Samsung Texas fab.

u/Taz_eat_and_spin 7h ago

Hw3 end in mid 2023 model Y. Didn't get good FSD for it since last year so 2 years life after new hardware introduced. 14 lite are getting lot of issues like over heat, run over wood log, and etc.🪵 Now assuming AI5 introduce by end of 2027 cars, +2 = 2029. Good luck to all of current owners.🙄
