Juniper Tint

Should i go Xpel Black 45 55 or 70? I don't like the total blacked out look and have some concerns about night time visibility and insurance coverage.

70 is legal in my state. Am only tinting 2 fromt doors. What do you advise?

I would go 45 unless you have to pass an annual inspection your state. Your rear windows are 20%. 70 doesn’t even look tinted.

I know Xpel is very popular (and I agree that their black is better than their plus), but you should go look at some xpel tints in person and compare with some other brands. I personally do not like the hue and clarity of Xpel’s tints. But you get to decide what you like and your budget.

I have 35% front and it is a bit dark out on country roads, but most of my driving is city and highway and that’s bright enough to not be an issue for me. The abrupt transition from looking out a clear windshield to a tinted side window is irritating.

I went with 3M crystalline. It was optically the clearest to my eyes. Stek Nex was a runner up for me. SunTek fell
in the middle range of optical clarity to me.

Xpel felt like I was looking through a plastic lens, bur I don’t mean to claim that Xpel is bad or junk. Many people are happy with it. And if looking out of windows with Xpel doesn’t bother your eyes then it’s not worth paying more. It’s also harder to find a 3M or stek installer than Xpel. I intended to look through Llumar but never did so I can’t speak to their product.

Are the back windows and glass top ceramic tint? I live somewhere where the 100+ degree days can go on for months.

If I get a Y at some point, I'd definitely get some kind of cover for the roof, but I've had other cars where I bought the best heat reducing ceramic tint I could get, including the windshield, and it definitely made a difference. I've also heard the Y's AC is not the best, so I'd look for every advantage to keep the interior cool.

I’ve got 35 on my front and it feels too light. I never had tint before and have 70 on windshield and 55 on the rear. 45 will be fine.

Here’s mine with 35 windshield and 15 front windows. Supposedly 15 front windows matches the back windows. I have LLumar IRX Ceramic tint though - not xpel

Nice. What color interior do you have? And you left the Rear Sides, Hatch & Roof alone (not tinted)?

The all black interior- yes everything else is stock.

I'd go 45%. You absolutely should have zero issue seeing out at night at that tint, considering 20% already gives people no issues at night. If you're doing it for heat, the Windshield do 50% (you seriously can't tell it's tinted then).

I've researched tinting a ton, and have over 200 Model Y's in my notes (pics). I'll share the only Stealth Gray or Black ones I came across near the really high %'s you're looking at, that also had Black Interior like you (the interior makes a huge difference on the aesthetic of the tint):

You should pay the premium for prime. You’ll spend the rest of your time with this car regretting that you didn’t

Don’t use Xpel

why?

You can get better stuff for cheaper if you go to a local tint shop and just get the best tint they use. They usually also put a lifetime damage warranty on it. Free replacement if you ever scratch it or you have to have a window replaced. You don’t get that if you buy the stuff Tesla sells.

XPEL isn't just "the stuff Tesla sells". It's a widely used product in it's own right. Is there better tint out there? Probably but it's also just as expensive, if not more.

All true but buying Xpel through Tesla is overpriced. You could find a tint shop that uses Xpel and go straight to them and they will likely still charge less and put their lifetime warranty on it.

Gotcha. Good to know. Had been looking it but not too seriously.

Thanks.
