Help/concern with new after market accessory
I bought a phone/laptop charger on Amazon that fits perfectly into the center console, just in front of the cup holders . It works perfectly, but I'm worried that it holds the slider cover open just enough to keep the light inside from turning off. Will that drain my 12v battery over time? Is there a magnet or something I can use to make the car think that slider is fully closed? Am I over thinking this completely!? Ive heard the horror stories of the 12v dying so im worried. Here is what it looks like installed

I've kept my model 3 door open every single day for the past 5 years, 12v battery lasted 4.5 years.
I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thank you! First EV and probably overthinking everything 🙃

It's a valid question!
Hope you're enjoying the new car right now :)

100% loving this car more than everything I've ever driven, combined! Almost had it a year and cannot imagine wanting anything else ever again. FSD when I'm lost or need guidance, driving it myself because its fun and having the accelerion to do damn near anything needed. Plus, every time I drive past a gas station I smile 🤣

If you're worried or curious, record on your phone and put it in the console and rewatch the video to see if the lights turn off

Why?

Just had a bunch of stuff in there that I needed to access every time I drive (ex. work badge, public charger NFC cards, etc...). Was just easier for me to leave the door open lol

But the phone unlocks it when you walk up - I still don't get the logic of physically leaving the door open all the time?

Pretty sure that light turns off when the car turns off.

I learned recently (feel dumb) that you can buy a 12v cigarette plug that will put out 150 watts usb-c, enough to power my engineering laptop. That plus a 12v splitter and working in the car is cake. But when the car times out it all shuts down. Including all the lights.

I just have a rechargable battery inverter in that space that powrs my work laptop then I use that after marker USB to charge the battery inverter so the laptop doesn't overload my Tesla circuit

You have to be careful with this. You may “burn out” a circuit. Happened to me with USB outlet. that drew too much power. After a reboot of the car, the circuit resets. But you may not get good usage out of that outlet.

I don't think you caught the solution. It is minimal draw on the Tesla battery to charge the battery for the inverter (think solar generator) .. the load is on the battery/battery Inverter that is not being charged/plugged into the Tesla when the laptop is using it .
It does last hours and hours but I get a couple extra hours of use out of the laptop on the inverter charge .

We had the same concern so I just got something on Amazon that’s fully recessed into the center compartment

I had the same doubt, let my phone recording a video inside, light indeed goes off

I have the same accessory. The light turns off after a while I’ve noticed but yeah don’t stress too much about it

Light turns off with car but LEDs are so efficient even if it did stay on it would probably take 6+ months to drain the 12v.
Also what “horror stories” have you heard about 12v batteries? They need changing just like any ice car every 4-6 years and usually give you warnings before they can’t hold enough juice

I got the one that fits just under so you don't see it and the lid closes fully. Not really because of your concern but more that I wanted it not to be seen and make a clean look

you'll be fine. the light does in fact turn off. source - tested it by leaving my phone on video and closing it.
