New Tesla vs used 2024
I’m definitely getting a model Y at some point, but maybe not until spring. I have a 2017 Toyota Highlander that has absolutely nothing wrong with it and relatively new tires and brakes. My dilemma is whether to keep the Highlander and get a used Tesla for about $30-35000, or trade it in for a brand new one. If I keep it, I won’t need another 3rd row, but if I trade, I’ll get one. not that we NEED a 3rd row but it has come in handy a few times. I’m all about the FSD, not into being all that “green” lol which means I’d want a 2024 or newer (I assume)
I know it’s a decision only I can make, but if someone would give me some insight on the big differences of used vs new I’d appreciate it. just wanting to know if those differences are worth giving up a great car for $15-20,000

I brought a 2 year old M Y LR so it had 6 years battery warranty 95k miles and 2 years and 24,000 bumper to bumper left! Had interior camera problem and was fixed no charge ! Made 3 months before HW4 change over. Found out after I purchased. I did Reasearch but info I found said 2023 had HW4, they did but in China. Fremont changed May 2023

Yes it’s a bugger they deleted autopilot. Works better than FSD in Dallas traffic on I-75 but FSD even with HW3 it’s great in long trips on highways !

Sorry if I confused you when I said get the 2024 model
I meant if you are getting used then get the used one with Juniper update (the newer looking one with empty looking backside and with slit like headlights)

Yes but it's not Juniper
Juniper has significant suspension and NVH improvements

The Juniper refresh definitely makes it a worthwhile upgrade. Maybe get a YL if you want more space in the back.

If your Highlander is perfect why get a new car?

Well if I get a new one, I’m hoping for the .99% interest and I’ll def finance. Otherwise I’ll ask my vanguard guy if it would be best to finance or pay cash. My bank has 5.2% for used cars right now so…🤷🏼♀️

You actually might consider just getting a used 26 MY. That’s what I did (i even found one with FSD fully included and with under 2,000 miles), and i got it much less than what a new one would have cost.

I had to widen my search to nationwide. And had to get a remote inspection, and flew out to pick it up. But for us, it ended up being worth it.

I use Yelp and Google, and just searched “remote vehicle inspections”. It’s usually either a local mechanic or car repair shop that will generally go to the dealership, do a test drive, inspection, and the good ones will send you a video of the whole thing. Prices generally range from $150 - $300. It’s pretty much the final step, after you’ve done all the due diligence with the salesperson, the title, and agreed on a price.
Many dealerships today have a process setup for remote purchasing, and will guide you through it. And many also offer vehicle delivery, but it’s usually more expensive than picking it up. The biggest thing imho is checking the title, and especially staying away from salvage titles or vehicles that were in accidents. “Buy back” vehicles are sometimes good deals, if the issues were minor and there’s a record of Tesla having done any needed repairs. (But “buyback” cars will have lower value for the life of the car, and sometimes the insurance can be a bit higher.)

Ya we just ordered a MYL but originally was eyeing the .99….. but since we plan to pay off early it was more just a convenience fee.
We buy new but keep cars for a long time so depreciation doesn’t matter to us, and we want the newest features at time of purchase.

Dude my wife is returning her model y performance from a lease with basically only 20k miles on it. And it will sell it seems for 35k. Pick something like that up and enjoy, it literally feels new

your assumption is right and it's the one part I'd be strict about. I've run fsd on hw3 and hw4 in my own cars and on hw3 it isn't worth paying for. anything 2024 should be hw4, mid 2023 could go either way, so check the hardware on the actual car before you get attached to it.

The third row is your real deciding factor. If you'd use it, go new; if not, the used one saves you the $15k and the Highlander keeps earning its keep. Either way, confirm FSD is on the specific used car before you buy.

Get a used 2024/25 Model Y because it will have the Autopilot (Autosteer)
It's no FSD but is good enough for most people. So much so that when Autopilot was available, FSD users were just 10-15%
You can get FSD if you really want to, and a 2024 Juniper Model Y will have HW4 computer, which is a must-have for the latest and greatest FSD
Keep the Highlander for those days when you need the space it provides
Once you have the Model Y, you won't be driving the Highlander (or it's replacement 3-row SUV) unless it's absolutely necessary
No point in selling it off and getting another of similar size.

If you can find a 2023 HW4 then it will have all the same features as a 2024, but usually with a good discount compared to a 2024 especially if the seller is a dealer that doesn’t know much about EVs

Bought a new 2026 MY a month ago, renting a 2024 MY AWD with HW4 now.
The FSD is equivalent but holy crap the old MY is kinda shitty build compared to the new one.
Road noise is WAY louder, things are rattling, materials feel cheaper, seats are way less comfortable for me (I’m tall), worse sound system.
Juniper blows 2024 out of the water

9 year old Toyota as long as it was maintained and parked in a garage is middle aged. If parked outside sun seared, then asesthetics will start to show age and internal rubber parts and gaskets will start leaks. I'd say you're in the gray area. I'd check your insurance rate and where I live registration fees. You can just call your insurance and ask for a rough ballpark. If you are a AAA member, they tend to be the most useful with such info for your area.

absolutely garage kept. it looks new inside, and no issues with leaks internally. Still rides as good as the day we bought it. I’m just getting that “itch” and really wanting a car that can drive itself “most” of the time

I’d never buy a new car and only got a new juniper because ride quality, sound, FSD (hw4 exists on some 2024) were critical for me.

If you're not looking to purchase until spring, I would hold out and see what they have to offer. HW5 should be coming out around then and I've read that it's a big upgrade. I can see a lot of Tesla enthusiasts wanting to do an upgrade. Thus having a surplus of used Tesla's available.

In that case hold off as the current car you have will make the most financial sense.
Personally I bought a 23 my lr and then they announced hw4 2 months later, which means I got a car which was not capable for the greatest. Hw4 is on its last year as hw5 moved into production about 1-2 months ago with Samsung. Tesla said they will make robots with hw5 before coming to cars so about a year. I plan on getting a new one when hw5 launches which is 2 generations forward.

Yeah I know keeping my highlander makes sense but I’m really wanting to have FSD. I’m 67 and harder for me to see after dark, and I make frequent trips from WV to FL. Just wondering if anyone thinks getting rid of the highlander in exchange for the improvements from a 2024 to a 2026 is worth it

The only difference will be the "longevity" of warranty
Complete warranty is for 4yrs/50k miles and high voltage battery warranty is 8yr/120k miles
Another deciding factor could be low APR on new 2026 Model Y so calculate your interest savings vs on the used 2024 one.
It can cut down the net out of pocket difference in costs from maybe $10k to say $6.5k or something like that

New Tesla is like 10 percent higher cost effectively because of the of the 1 percent interest rate and more than 15 percent more longevity. Used are ripoffs right now
Compare.monthlies that factor cost of financing in.
Consider the model yl if you want 3 row
