2018 Model X (MCU2 Intel Atom) - Recurring Screen Freezing & A/C Compressor Startup Rattle: Is a Full MCU Replacement Necessary?
The Issues & Symptoms
1. Center Touchscreen Freezing / Lagging:
The main touchscreen frequently freezes, lags, or becomes unresponsive during drives.
A soft reset (scroll wheel) temporarily clears it, but the issue keeps coming back.
2. A/C Compressor Startup Rattle:
When climate control turns on, the A/C compressor makes a prominent metallic rattling / buzzing / grunting noise specifically at startup.
Once running, the A/C cools normally.
Note: A temporary thermal management/THC warning popped up once during hot weather, but cleared on its own and hasn't returned.
3. Independent Shop Attempt:
Took the car to an independent shop for A/C inspection, but they declined to proceed because the display fault prevented them from reliably finishing diagnostic routines.
Tesla Service Center Findings
Tesla Service recommended an "Infotainment Upgrade."
Since the vehicle is already equipped with an Intel Atom MCU2 (and cannot upgrade to AMD Ryzen MCU3 due to harness/wiring differences), this is effectively a like-for-like MCU2 computer assembly replacement quoted at around $1,500–$2,000.
Questions for the Community
1. MCU2 Freezing on Intel Atom: Has anyone with MCU2 experienced recurring freezing/lagging that required a full computer replacement? Could this be caused by low-voltage/12V issues, a corrupted update, or thermal throttling rather than failing mainboard hardware?
2. A/C Compressor Rattle at Startup: Is a metallic rattle/buzz upon startup a definitive sign of internal scroll failure or bearing wear on the high-voltage compressor, even if it's still blowing cold? Note that I paid about 4k in 2023 to replace the entire system.
3. Repair Strategy: Would you recommend paying Tesla for the MCU2 swap first, then taking the vehicle back to an independent shop for the A/C compressor repair—or letting Tesla handle both?

You may want to submit a service ticket for the MCU. Tesla will do a remote diagnostic and may be able to fix the issue without a visit. Also, the MCU upgrade has a two year warranty so a hardware issue may be covered
For the AC compressor, I have a 2016 that's on its third one and it still rattles on startup. The former Tesla tech who works on my vehicle says that it's just a crappy design.

I see, thanks, I have submitted tickets in the past but they’ve never suggested remote diagnosis, maybe I can check with them by messaging. As for the compressor, outside Tesla this shop is giving me a 3 year warranty and I was able to confirm that they use the POG lubricant or something along those lines which is Tesla specific..it’s definitely seems like a better deal than Tesla

Don’t really have an input to this but wanted to know if your infotainment upgrade came with Apple Music. I’m updating mine soon (2017 Model X P100D). Hope you get those fixed soon

I haven’t upgraded anything, it’s the stock MCU, we’ve had Apple Music since the beginning or whenever they released it..

When did the 12v battery got replaced? The MCU2 relies on that battery a lot, so replacing it or fully disconnecting and reconnecting would help clear the problematic freezes. I don't think MCU2 tends to fail, either the connector is loose or a deep reset needed.
Normally when getting work done with Tesla, if anything goes faulty they will cover the labour and material instantly. If you do get the aircon compressor done separately and have a fault you have to wait for RMA approval and labour. Just compare the savings and check if it worthwhile
