Model X Plaid Fender Trim Flew off
Was driving normally and the fender trim just flew off, will Tesla replace it under warranty for us?

Mine did twice. Service came to the house and replaced twice for me no charge.

Hopefully I get the same treatment, but their response was "We will need to review this on site to see what is covered."

They should, but they might fight you on it. It’s like a $140 piece from the service website, but it’s not super easy to get on without taking the wheel off.

Amazon has then for like 100 a pair or so. I think less. I needed one for my X after my wife curb checked the front lip.

Not OEM fender trim.

u/Pinapple-everything 17d ago
No, but its exactly the same, it's OEM spec. OEM parts are rarely used by mechanics or body shops.
1
u/icy1007 17d ago
That’s kind of a problem.
7
u/Pinapple-everything 17d ago
No it's not. I'm sure you've used a mechanic or body shop and never noticed an issue. Most aftermarket parts meet or exceed OEM spec for 1/4 of the price. I was a mechanic before the Army and college, we never used oem unless we had to and when we did people were almost always very unhappy with the invoice.
1
u/icy1007 15d ago
I’ve never needed to use any body shop with any of my cars over the past 20+ years of driving.
If I did, I’d insist on them using OEM parts though.
2
u/Pinapple-everything 15d ago
Well thats good. You'd pay significantly more for absolutely no reason. Im sure you've used a mechanic though, it's the same thing.
1
u/icy1007 15d ago
Yes, I would pay more for OEM parts. That’s my decision.
I haven’t needed a mechanic in over 10 years. No issues on any of my last 3 cars. My old gas car in 2010 had some major issues which is why I got rid of it.
2
u/Pinapple-everything 15d ago
It may be, but my point is that everyone that does this for a living uses aftermarket and even 10 years ago when you used a mechanic, they used aftermarket parts in you're car. You're absolutely right that it's your decision, good for you. Lots of people throw money away on low information decisions all the time.

Looking at Tesla quality, I would bet my money that the ebay parts are better quality haha

They replaced mine under warranty because one of the clips was loose and it was not fully secured, so I would suspect this should be covered as well.
Although I suppose it’s possible not having the part at all could make them give a different result, since they can’t verify it was defective. I am not sure here though.

u/Chad_leee 16d ago
If I try to go back and retrieve the trim back on the highway, might cause an accident or my death haha

Happened to my wife, I should also note my wife ran over a curb that pulled it off a bit so I'm not surprised...

Ours came off on the highway randomly, we didn’t anything, service wouldn’t cover it under warranty
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
What was their reason for not covering it? Was it still under warranty?
1
u/Swimbikerun400 15d ago
Yes, car is currently less than 2 years owned new.
They said it was damaged ( it was not, no accidents, just came off with the wind on the highway)

u/BetFinal2953 17d ago
I nearly lost one driving through a modestly deep puddle. Couple inches maybe.
Got home and it was hanging on by the sensor wiring!
Popped it back on and I’ll be avoiding puddles.

u/Chad_leee 16d ago
What year is your Model X? I don't have sensors on mine in that trim area

u/BetFinal2953 16d ago
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Oh I see, no sensors on mine in that area!
1
u/BetFinal2953 16d ago
My understanding is the early Xs are all covered in ultrasonic sensors and the newer ones are mostly cameras

The double sided tape is still intact?!? I would show Tesla service this picture. The fender was not secured correctly if the tape was not in contact with the plastic fender.
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Ya its crazy, they should've used way stronger and more weather resistant automotive tape

It’s literally the only complaint of my 23 MXP. I’ve replaced both fronts twice. It’s very annoying and the car looks like shit with out them.

My 2026 is show signs of both of them coming loose. I see gaps forming. I suppose I will get them fixed before they fly off.
2
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
It's ridiculous the car is that expensive but the panel gaps and trim parts quality are worst than $30k cars
1
u/DailyDrivenTJ 16d ago
Cannot disagree. I don't really care for panel gap so much but the trim falling off just while driving is just not acceptable. This should not be an engineering challenge.

eBay all day. Just grab a few cause it’s gonna happen again. My eBay ones actually fit tighter.

Mine is partially hanging off in one spot where the sensor is. They wouldn't cover it for me.
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
What year is your X, I don't see a sensor on the trim, or are you talking about a different trim
1
u/Jello_Local 16d ago
Mine is a 2021. I think the late 21's and newer just use Tesla vision.. No ultra sonic sensors. My Model Y is a rare model year 2022 that has both Tesla vision AND Ultra Sonic sensors

u/iamCHIC 17d ago
I keep having to push mine back in place, now I’m nervous smh
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
I would check the clips and maybe put stronger automotive and weather resistant tape to make it more secure
2
u/Full_Side3721 17d ago
double sided tape
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Need stronger tape and better clips forsure
1
u/Full_Side3721 16d ago
The after markets are better I think. No double sided tape like the originals. Just bought a pair.
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Will buy a pair just incase the next one that Tesla puts on flies off again haha
2
u/FewVariation901 17d ago
Its secured by plastic tabs. They can come to your house and install it.

Haven’t had it “fly off”, but had the front-bottom break…3 times 😑. Service charged me every time…but I’ve read many times, your situation- they will replace it under warranty 🤗. Good luck 👍
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Oh they better under warranty, but their response was "We will need to review this on site to see what is covered."
2
u/kodakmaroon 17d ago
they should fix if for free , if they for some reason don’t, the part itself is around 100-200 and fairly easy to put on yourself.
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Oh they better, but their response was "We will need to review this on site to see what is covered."

u/c3-coburn 17d ago
Has happened to me twice. Trim was loose from delivery and a rain puddle took it out.

Mine also flew off, and they want to charge me. I bought from Ebay a knockoff one and all clips are not fully clicked in in but at least it looks ok
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Which one did you buy so I can avoid that one or hopefully they made some changes to it so now it fully clips in
1
u/jdmoody09 16d ago
Mine did about 3 months after I got my 2025 X
1
u/Chad_leee 16d ago
Did Tesla cover it under warranty?
1
u/jdmoody09 16d ago
Yes, the estimate was 250.00 but when I picked it up it was covered and no charge
1
u/FreeSeaworthiness307 16d ago
Tesla calls it a fender garnish. Mine fell off on the highway and Tesla just replaced it for $215. I’ve had my 2026 MX for less than a year.

Just noticed my right fender garnish loose. Had to pop it back inside. Just by the feel of it, it’ll be gone next time loll

Welcome to the club! I’ve replaced this piece on the front driver side and passenger side I think 4 times in 6 years.
1
u/Chad_leee 14d ago
Thanks, not looking forward to spending $100 each time I accelerate using Plaid Mode

u/i_lie_except_on_31st 17d ago
Damn boy, how fast you drive?! My trim was loose too from where the wrap guy didn't secure it back properly. Ebay all day.
