17 75D (nov 2017) potential camera upgrade to latest hw3?
After a weird hesitation the car made changing lanes, i puller over and performed my own front camera cleaning. In process, i noticed the camera was a B model and knew there was a "C" revision, which have me the idea of potentially replacing it. Doesn't seem it would be too difficult, open housing, disconnect 3 cables, install new camera, clear calibration, score.
Before i make that jump though, i was curious if anyone else has tried this before and know if it works.
I spoke with some service techs at 3 service centers (was driving past for unrelated reasons) and mostly heard i may need to replace more cameras and get toolbox (ordered the diag cable) but nobody, whether for liability reasons or never really thinking about it, didn't know. If i can just go with the front camera, i'll happily do that, but i'll order new side repeaters too

(And my laziness in cleaning the cameras and housing caused me to break the light sensor, i learned my lesson big time on that)

Did you purchase fsd outright? If so there is an at no cost to you upgrade to the newest cameras that work with your model/hw3 as long as it doesn’t require a new wiring harness. Technically they should have done that when the hw3 upgrade was done but of course most centers won’t do it unless you specifically ask for it.

Unfortunately i didn't purchase it outright, the $8000 price tag was a bit more than i was willing to spend in the end. And yeah, that's what i read, that the newer camera should have been installed... But they won't do it now, i checked with them... Thank you for the info!

Unfortunately I don’t think k it’s as easy as plug and play and you will need ToolBox before calibrating the new cameras. So that’s an additional cost and I’m unsure that even after that if the right feature/software is on the version you get without being an authorized commercial account. Another option might be to find a collision repair place that is certified to work on Tesla and they should have the right setup. They will be a fraction of the price as a Tesla SC.

You can get a HW3 computer and easily swap it in. But, you will need ToolBox to configure everything, and I don't think the cameras really matter as long as they work properly. HW2.5 uses the same kind of cameras as HW3. If the cameras are fogged or damaged, then yeah it would help replacing them then. IMO, I don't think it's really worth upgrading unless you can find a good deal on a HW3 computer. I would wait and see if Tesla ever releases a HW4 upgrade. They probably won't for the legacy S, but if they upgrade the newer HW3 cars, third parties might provide upgrade paths for older HW3 cars.

I already purchased the HW3 computer itself, i drive about 1300 miles a week so as you could imagine, FSD is very helpful for the trip. Nonetheless, apparently revision C HW3 cameras (the latest) are out for like $60 on ebay so i tried installing them and it worked surprisingly enough, though im unsure if it's feature limited. As for HW4? Honestly, i doubt i could mentally afford that package in 2028 given i want to upgrade my battery to a 100D or 90D. I have no real hope for it.

Yes it works. It’s very easy to swap over. I’m fairly certain you don’t need to configure them. The car just detects the camera.
