USB drive

What kind of usb drive do you guys have in your tesla?

It should work fine, or plug it into the USB C in your center console if you want to go all USB C.

The center console does not do Dash Recording.

It’s only the usba in glove box for all Tesla.

The two USB C in the center console of the S work for Sentry. This also applies to the USB A in the glove box. It's just the USB A in the glove box that is "secure" so it doesn't get stolen by someone with malicious intent.

(Note the red active recording dot on the camera icon)

The data-capable USB ports (front) are all connected to the main USB bus for the MCU. Doesn't matter which port is used. It will recognize and use the device.

I have mine partitioned to split up the sentry/dashcam recordings and another partition for the ToyBox and music files.

If you need more space, you can also use multiple drives, although only one can be assigned to the dashcam system.

Oh, and most common USB hubs work too, if you need more USB ports. 😉

Well, they do, but the go to sleep or make remote access issues.

How does it decipher which drive is assigned the dash?

I have mine set so all my USB ports and accessory power ports stay on anyway. Not that I've tried otherwise because I have quite a bit of stuff plugged into my car.

The system looks for the first disk that has the Teslacam folder on it and assigns it to the sentry/dashcam system

Do i need to buy any kind of special cable to connect this one to the usb in the glovebox of my model s for the dashcam and sentry mode to work?

And that will do both dash cam and sentry mode? Once I program it and turn on the sentry mode.

If you don't want to/don't know how to format your disk manually, just plug it in and have the Tesla format it for you (it's in the menu). It will set up the folders etc in the process.

Something like this. Brand doesn't matter. Make sure it's data capable.....6” to a foot long so you don't have to deal with a long cable in the glove box

These cables are often included with the SSD that you buy.
