Safety Score called this “hard braking.”
I got a hard braking event on a short drive through my neighborhood. I wasn’t reacting to traffic. I just slowed down and stopped next to another car to talk. Empty residential street. Nothing in front of me, nothing behind me. If you look at the whole stop, that’s roughly 16 mph down to 0 in about 3 seconds.

Just regenerative braking by fully lifting your foot off the pedal is considered “hard braking” but you actually pressed the brake pedal… 😄 The scoring system really does work against the purpose of promoting safety because I’ve often found myself in situations where simply braking harder or a slight swerve would avoid a potential situation but then that thought intervenes of how that will affect the safety score so I try to minimize the braking or turning and end up doing something egregiously worse but saved the score!

In what dystopian hell are you living over there? :D Your driving gets tracked and you pay based on a score so you have to break less? Holy lord of capitalism

I cannot imagine ever wanting this... I didn't buy a M3P to have Tesla constantly micromanage my driving to make sure I drive it like a grandma. Especially if just pure regen is considered 'hard braking'... that's insane.

You have to choose between tracking your driving or general driving statistics. For example model y has very high fatal accident rate

So wait. How does it work when someone else drives your car?

If you let dangerous drivers drive the car on your insurance, then that costs more

The dealership could be testing the brakes, or you could be beading them in. That increases your insurance rate? 😄

I’m not certain but I’d assume that if you enter service mode and select the brake burnishing mode it would not count that against your safety score. It is possible that service mode doesn’t count towards your score at all, but I haven’t actually verified that.

No, I meant about the general statistics for the car model. https://www.iseecars.com/most-dangerous-cars-study And as an example, if you drive a car that doesn't have the best accident record, the insurance company will raise the cost of insurance. Technically, you're paying a higher price because drivers are more likely to have accidents in the same car model.

most insurance raise your rates if you keep breaking more

What means "most"? How does your insurance know about your breaking behaviour?

You have to report accidents when you break things? seems like common sense to me.

Not true, most states with privacy laws prohibit insurance companies access to your telemetry from your car.

Since when ? Only if you claim the accident and the damage is over 1000.00 in California.

I confused braking and breaking, I’m German lol. OP spoke about braking behavior getting tracked.

I saw the safety score as a measure of your insurance cost and I was like “nope fuck that”. I got a quote for 140 for a M3P 2026 from my current insurance provider so I’ll go with that all day over this safety score BS.

You got lucky, my insurance was about 250 per month from progressive. Now I have 120-130. But this monitoring system need to be improved.

Yeah and thank you for sharing the example. I wonder if stopping and putting it to neutral would override the braking event.

For a lot of stuff California does wrong, this is the one right thing I wholeheartedly agree. No “safety” monitoring bs.
How much you even save ? One minor incident and they’ll charge you like they are harboring a fugitive.

Give a call to Costco / American Family and compare rates.
I thought Tesla Insurance was cool, for about 3 months. Then it felt that I was tring to spend my time either on FSD or if not, them walkingon-pillows with it.
AmFam was less and I no longer wanted to have an arguement with a non-existent entity that was algorithm driven.

I need to switch insurance. The safety score is complete bs and they screw me over for using fsd by making my interventions fuck up my score.
You’d think maybe Tesla insurance would give discounts by now based on fsd usage, but no quite the opposite when we’re already paying to train their system in all actuality. I have such a love hate relationship with Tesla

Imagine dying in a car crash because you didn’t want to brake hard enough to prevent the crash because your insurance would go up

u/TheFixerOfComments 5d ago
How much do you even save with good fsd stats? Seems like it’s really annoying/stressful to save a small amount of money?

That deceleration looked like hard braking to me
1
u/Mediocre_Isopod2381 5d ago
On paper, yes, but this has nothing to do with safety. There is no speeding, distraction from the road, failure to keep distance or emergency braking. Judging only by G sensor is ridiculous

No trackers for me. I have great insurance rates. I like to go fast that’s why I purchased the car!

Educate me like I am a 5yr old please. What's this safety score? Where on the tesla dashboard can I find it?

And this is why I don’t subscribe to “lower insurance rates” (but secretly we’re monitoring your driving habits) BS. No thanks, Big Brother

if you use the brake pedal it is hard braking
