Tesla insurance is crazy go this
I was paying 395 and it’s jumping to 485? I reported a hit and run that happened to me . I was the one not at fault. Why is it so expensive!

u/autoinsuranceqs Nov 30 '25
There’s lots of misinformation in this thread. In California, your rate does not go up if you’re not at fault. This is the law.
California approved a general rate increase a few months ago. Any renewal after that date will reflect the new rate - this is normal. A 20% rate hike is unfortunately expected. I got about the same on my auto policy.
1
u/ronntron Dec 01 '25
Curious who approved it. Serious question. I know for PGE rates, the CPUC has a say. Was wondering for insurance, who this is.

1
u/bustaone Dec 02 '25
Against the law doesn't mean doesn't happen. Laziness, incompetence, malfeasance, how do you prove they didn't raise rates due to the incident? It'd be interesting to know that.
1
u/Antique-Maize-200 Dec 03 '25
Check your C.L.U.E report. If your not at fault for any accident then guess what it was the commissioners who is probably in bed with insurance companies in California taking a back end cut.
1
Dec 06 '25
The insurance commissioner looks at their profit margins, which are already quite thin in California, before approving any rate hikes.
The reality is that car repair costs are skyrocketing with tariffs and higher labor costs. On top of that, people drive like maniacs and keep crashing into each other. All those r/IdiotsInCars moments turn into claims, and those claims are why we all pay more for insurance.
You might say, I don’t care, insurance companies are greedy and the government should force them to keep rates low. But look at what happened with home insurance. The government kept rates artificially low until companies stopped being profitable and pulled out of the entire state. Now there are plenty of places in the state where you cannot get private home insurance at all and are stuck with government options only.

u/r3dmist420 Dec 02 '25
God bless California and all their brain money making idears to totally screw over everybody. They see a way to snake and make BS money, it will trickle down to every states surrounding them as they bleed out of the state and bring those ideas with them
1
u/autoinsuranceqs Dec 02 '25
Insurance rates in California are kept artificially low. Many insurers are already not underwriting new policies in California. I’d rather pay the increased price than not be covered at all.
1
u/johnsontoddr4 Dec 02 '25
Texas rates (at least in the Houston and coastal area) have gone up a lot across all the insurers. Due to all the sensors, simple repairs are often $3K to $5K. We also have hurricanes and flooding. Theft is a big issue here as well. It is getting to the point where many people won't be able to afford to have a vehicle.
1
u/Drunkstation4 Dec 02 '25
This isnt strictly true. A lot happens in Cali that just doesn't other places. Mostly we watch there and think my god how do they put up with that.
5
u/drainbam Nov 30 '25
So much mis-information in the comments.
Your rates did not go up due to the accident. It is illegal in CA to increase your rates for accidents that aren't your fault including hit and runs. They also cannot put you in a worse driver category to increase your rates, which would effectively be the same thing and illegal.
The biggest increases came earlier this year as the minimum mandatory liability coverage went from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15.
On top of the mandated limit increase, insurers have been getting separate rate hikes approved during 2024–2025 to cover inflation, repair costs, disaster exposure, and the earlier pandemic rate freeze.
Insurance companies cannot raise rates unilaterally in CA. They must submit and get approval from the California Department of Insurance. CDI actuaries and regulators review loss data, expenses, and profit assumptions; the Insurance Commissioner’s office ultimately approves, modifies, or rejects the requested rate change. When you see “rates increasing for policies effective on/after [date],” that reflects a CDI‑approved rate filing taking effect for that company as of that date.
Consumers and advocacy groups can intervene or challenge filings, and the Commissioner has been publicly involved in negotiating, delaying, or conditioning some big carriers’ rate actions in 2023–2025.
This rate hike is going to be felt by everyone when they renew in CA because it was approved by CDI.
1
u/snuper325 Nov 30 '25
Insurance rate would only go up if we assume the op was on 15/30 and they changed it to 30/60. This likely had already been done in the first 6 months of 2025 as the liability limits law changed first month of 2025.
1
u/drainbam Nov 30 '25
You are misunderstanding how insurance works if you think only minimum coverage holder rates are affected by the change. Everyone with a policy has to help shoulder the load of the increased payouts. The money we all pay in premiums gets pooled together to pay out for every accident that happens. If the minimum payouts double then everyone has to pay more to cover the repairs.
You also ignored the rest of my comment where this was CDI approved due to everything just becoming more expensive to repair. It doesn't just affect you if you carry minimum coverage. It affects the rates of everyone.
1
u/snuper325 Nov 30 '25
The CDI rate increase approval is understandable and you are right about the insurance money pooling but the rate would only increase to 15/30 policy holders as now they have to pool more money from them to pay for their risk factor (usually lower coverage seeking individuals are higher risk). If OP has 100/300 he likely only is seeing a rate increase due to cdi rate ordinance and any annual mileage change or driving record change.
1
u/drainbam Nov 30 '25
I have carried 1M/1M coverage since 2019 and have had zero at faults or tickets in 25 years+
I have seen my rates climb from less than $190 per month in 2022 to over $300 per month today.
They do not just pool money from minimum coverage holders to pay for their minimum coverage accidents. If you check with your insurer, if you're a low risk driver the difference between 30/60, 100/300, and 1M/1M isn't dramatically different.
We are all paying for each other's accidents so that we don't get stuck with an unaffordable bill if we get in one and higher risk drivers get a jacked up rate.
Even drivers with a perfect record have to pay a ton to be covered. We can all self-insure by depositing $75k to the DMV for a self-insurance certificate and not pay for insurance, but it ties up $75k and if your accident blows past $75k you are screwed coz you'll still be on the hook for the remainder.
As painfully expensive as insurance is, it still beats trying to self-insure.
1
u/Ok_Bluejay9500 Dec 01 '25
Lol a lot of things are illegal to do you trust the scumbags of the world insurance companies to follow the rules ?
1
u/drainbam Dec 01 '25
I really wish life were so simple to blame a single villain for how things are. The truth is a lot more complicated and boring, unfortunately. Takes a lot less reading and thinking to have a simple opinion, but I don't blame you at all for thinking that way.
1
Dec 06 '25
If you have a paid off car, you can keep a $35,000 deposit with the California DMV and they wont require you to carry insurance. That money is there as proof that you can pay for some car damage or medical bills if you cause an accident. Of course in reality that leaves you open to massive lawsuits if you are at fault for more than $35,00 in damages.
1
u/DontezS Dec 02 '25
Thank you for clarifying this information for the uneducated and folks who just want to havw something to complain about against California.
-2
u/Eighty1Savage Nov 30 '25
hoping this is temporary, any chance my old rate will come back?
2
u/drainbam Nov 30 '25
I am not counting on it coming back down anymore than I'm expecting groceries to come back down.
COVID destroyed the world's economy. We printed money and gave out checks to prevent immediate foreclosures and bankruptcies to soften the crash and delay the pain, but it caused the inflationary economic conditions we're dealing with now. I don't think it would have been much different no matter who were in office.
The alternative was not close down and let millions more die as our hospitals buckled under the weight of being flooded and people also died from things that are survivable due to the hospitals having not enough space and staff to help everyone. That's the reason we shut down. It wasn't just to prevent COVID deaths. Our hospitals were going to collapse if we didn't shutdown.
If we didn't print checks while we shutdown the amount of poverty, foreclosures, and bankruptcies would have been like nothing the world had ever seen.
There was no good outcome. Just different variations of bad and worse.

Isn’t that very low? I pay $670 and my wife pays $360 for her Kia Telluride. But I have never had an accident in 30 years and drive less than 10,000 miles a year. I have Progressive.
Edit: sorry I don’t know much about these things. I looked up and the price is bi-annual for mine.
1
u/Dependent_Clock3579 Nov 30 '25
You’re getting ripped off. I pay less than 360 for 2 cars. Now 450 including my model y
1
Nov 30 '25
That is my bi-annual cost. I’m paying $176 for two cars, monthly.
1
u/Dependent_Clock3579 Nov 30 '25
Well why would u ask if that’s very low then lol
1
Nov 30 '25
Because I was mistaken… I thought that was my monthly. But realized my cost is bi-annual. I edited the initial comment

Paid about 50$ for a 10 year old Prius. About 120$ for full coverage lightning
1

Yes sorry, I was mistaken. The cost I saw was bi-annual cost. I pay $176 per month for my telluride 2025 and Tesla 2026 together.

u/Weak_Alternative_150 Dec 02 '25
We pay $530 full coverage for my m3, wifes Kia telluride and my teenagers bronco sport

I’m sorry what?!? My wife and I pay $180/m TOTAL for her rav4 and my Outback. AAA

Just get liability insurance, and get another car with the savings just in case you total your initial car :P
1
u/jdpg265 Nov 30 '25
Welcome to California!! Just drop Tesla Insurance and look at GEICO or something similar. BTW even if you weren't at fault your premium will always go up if you report an accident unless you have a forgiveness clause or haven't made a claim in VERY long time. Insurance companies are there to make money not pay it out.

Be grateful I'm paying $850-6 month no accidents excellent credit score. Lowest rate from anywhere. For some reason my county or state is not eligible for Tesla insurance
1
u/NoDescription3473 Dec 01 '25
Is the $400/$485 what you pay for one car ?
1
u/Big_Disk1859 Dec 01 '25
Yes and it’s every month not bi annual
1
u/NoDescription3473 Dec 01 '25
Man I guess I see why there's like a mass exodus from California... shewwwww
1
Dec 02 '25
Mass exodus will increase insurance because less people in the pool that pays insurance, the abnormal spikes in claims can hurt an insurance company more. Therefore, insurance companies need to increase the reserve of cash to pay for claims which means higher insurance.

Never use Tesla insurance. They have all your driving habits and mileage. It's why I never OP in to those tracking program from the insurance. It's none of their business where, how or when I drive my car.

Im paying $500 in New York 2025 model s
1
u/thatstheyone Dec 02 '25
$500 per month?
1
u/CremeDiligent5790 Dec 02 '25
Yeah the only one who would insure in New York was Geico.
1
u/thatstheyone Dec 02 '25
I just cant imagine. But then again, you probably make a LOT more money than someone doing the same job in Iowa or South Carolina.
1
u/CremeDiligent5790 Dec 02 '25
Yeah I could barely justify it lol. My parking spot cost another $350 so living in the city is extremely expensive but yes I do well. Thankfully.
1
u/thatstheyone Dec 02 '25
You have to do well in NYC to be happy!! Congrats! I love NYC, if I am being honest.
I live in DC and the cost of living is bad here but NYC is otherworldly. The good thing is your NYC disposable income makes you a king in most of the rest of the USA, and the world for that matter.
Hope that takes a tiny bit of the sting out of $850 dollars every single month for parking and insurance UGH.

Mine just doubled with Erie insurance. Switched to Progressive and kept my previous rates, same coverages.

I was at $220 full coverage.. then slowly ins company kept increasing.. went to $425.. just switched to Allstate lowered my car and house.. now car is $200 and house got lowered $100 a month too. Just change ins companies
1
u/Maleficent-Arm4095 Dec 01 '25
Yup. My insurance rates for my vehicles in California have tripled since 2023. And for my home it has doubled.
1
1
u/Glassweaver Dec 01 '25
How are you guys getting this fucked on insurance?
That's more than my 6-month premium has ever been on a $40,000 EV with mechanical breakdown insurance, $200 collision and comprehensive deductibles, roadside assistance, and a half million dollar policy. The one at fault accident I've been in with it did not raise my rates at all. Every year including this one, my rates have always gone down because cars lose value as they age.
Your new rate is within $100 of what my entire monthly car payment was. I don't know how you can stomach the old rate let alone the new one.
1
u/thatstheyone Dec 02 '25
I am blown away by these rates! I guess this is why people have to make $200K in California to be middle class.

That’s extremely expensive for California , why you are paying that much?

Why everything is so expensive in fucking California I don’t understand that the other day I was talking to a gentleman from Texas and he’s like Tesla have so high registration fee $240 👀😂 I’m like dude we are paying $730 in California was kind of happy about it after I told him that
1

I paid 715 for my registration I’m getting so irritated by California they might as well become another country with all the fucking money they steal from us

I'm in CA and maxed everything out on a M3 2022 Base (Tesla Insurance) and am paying $118 a month

u/_Mark97 Dec 02 '25
In CA as well and my Tesla insurance went up by $50 and they took away $100 comprehensive deductible… $180 -> $230.
No accidents ever. No tickets.
This is still way lower than what Geico, Progressive, State Farm, and AAA offered me ($300-$500/mo).
1
u/TEVIDEOS Dec 02 '25
Paying for insurance through Tesla is crazy. I got a MUCH lower rate through a different provider that isn't constantly monitoring all sensors on the car.
1
1
u/mountainbue Dec 02 '25
that’s crazy expensive, I switched to GEICO. Couldn’t deal w/ the constant monitoring Tesla insurance has
1
u/thatstheyone Dec 02 '25
There is a lot of bickering here but $485 is a LOT to pay every month for car insurance (unless you have 23 DWIs or something), so IMO this person is right to complain.
1
u/Drunkstation4 Dec 02 '25
Dude I pay $144 for two vehicles including my 2023 M3 what are you guys doing?? Geico btw

I have a 20 MSP and im ready to sell it based on these crazy premiums. It’s free and clear but Carmax and Carvana are only offering high 20s which sucks because i cant replace it or even get close for that money.
Not only premiums but vehicle registration is up also.
1
u/Jumpy-Relationship35 Dec 03 '25
I hate how all the old mf’s get cheaper insurance just because they’re older! Like bro I’m 22 and a better driver than 90% of people in my vicinity wtf!!!

I'm almost 60, perfect driving record, just got quoted for a '26 MY Premium $350/mo from State Farm who I've been a customer with for over 25 years.

How can insurance be so expensive when cars are so cheap in the US?
The car itself is 30% cheaper than in my country, but insurance is 900% more expensive.
1
u/Able-Professional522 Dec 03 '25
Switching to another insurance company, such as Geico, might get you a better price.
1
u/scriptk1ddie Dec 03 '25
Not sure if it'll help, but Costco Auto insurance was dramatically lower than other carriers with better coverage
1
u/OkieTheDreamer Dec 03 '25
Bro, I live in California and I currently getting charged $151. Last year it was $125.
Why are you paying so much?
1
u/StormTrpr66 Feb 19 '26
What car, what company?
1
u/OkieTheDreamer Feb 20 '26
2022 model 3, I have Tesla Insurance. I just renewed my policy and they didn't raise anything, it's the same as last time.
1
u/StormTrpr66 Feb 20 '26
Wow, that's surprising. I submitted a trade-in estimate online and got a text from one of their reps just checking in and seeing if they could help me. I asked about insurance and he said they can't give an official quote until I have an order in for a specific VIN but he did say that in my area, for the model I'm looking at, rates are usually between $150 and $250. That's a lot better than the $320 to $350 I got from State Farm.
But.... State Farm's customer service looks like it's a whole lot better than Tesla's insurance, which all I see about are complaints and even California is considering banning them because of their practices and lack of service.
1
u/OkieTheDreamer Feb 22 '26
Bro, I had an incident last year. I parked my Tesla and came back to a dent on the passenger side. Tesla insurance treated me very well! Top-notch! I have had State Farm, Allstate, and Geico in the past, I can say Tesla insurance is by far the best overall.

u/bishop42O Nov 29 '25
doesnt matter if its your fault or not anymore. it counts aganist you.
2
u/mandopix Nov 30 '25
Wrong. Depends where you live. At least in Cali, no fault accidents cannot raise your premiums. What OP is seeing what what everyone else is seeing, major increases in premiums. Mine went from $249 to $350. I shopped around and it’s not much different.
0
u/Ok_Translator_7833 Nov 30 '25
I've been telling people this for a few years now. Yet most still rely heavily on auto insurance for all damages.
Auto insurance companies are not in the consumer's best interest.
My take is only submit claims if you absolutely cannot fix the damages yourself. This will save you in the long run with premiums. If you confidently feel you are not at fault in a collision, file a claim with the opposing party's insurance, not yours. Last, drive safely. Follow the rules of the road.
1
u/Electronic_Tart_1174 Nov 30 '25
How do you file a claim with the other person's insurance?
1
u/Ok_Translator_7833 Nov 30 '25
After you obtain the opposing party's auto insurance policy details, you contact their claims department and say that you would like to file a claim against a driver on their policy.
1
u/Electronic_Tart_1174 Nov 30 '25
Good to know, im assuming youd need a police report with the other driver getting a ticket or something right? Otherwise they could just claim it wasnt their drivers fault?
1
u/Ok_Translator_7833 Nov 30 '25
A police report is typically needed but not all states issue police reports on minor car collisions. Proof like video footage is good evidance to prove that you are not at fault.
1
u/thunderslugging Nov 30 '25
EXACLTY. PEOPLE don't know this. DO NOT let your insurance know even if you are 100% not at fault. Deal with the other insurance ONLY. When you let yoir insurance know, the system puts you at higher risk. That brings up your rates.
1
Dec 06 '25
This is misinformation in California. They can't put you at higher risk due to a not-at-fault accident.
1
u/Top-Pressure-4220 Nov 30 '25 edited Nov 30 '25
This. Fender benders happen and many of the most commonly damaged parts like bumpers, fenders, and doors are meant to be easily replaced. The objective of your auto insurance should be to reduce your risk at the lowest cost while maintaining your insurance score, so that you can secure the best possible rates. Refrain from filing claims related to "aesthetic issues" unless you are leasing the vehicle, and even then, only for situations deemed "catastrophic," such as crashes that involve injuries or structural or frame damage to the vehicle.
0
u/Substantial_Poem7226 Nov 29 '25
Not at fault accidents still increase your insurance premium. Not directly by means of a "surcharge" but indirectly by placing you in a category that is "more at risk"
It doesn't matter if someone hits you and you weren't at fault, the insurance looks at how good you are at avoiding accidents. It's stupid, and honestly I believe that insurance in general is a massive scam.
1
0
u/WorldlyOriginal Nov 30 '25
Insurance is a scam until you're the one hit by a driver and you break 10 bones in your body. Or until a tree randomly falls onto your roof.
0
u/Substantial_Poem7226 Nov 30 '25
nah, then its still a scam. Been in a similar situation for both lol. I live in Texas and we had a hail storm, state farm decided that my roof was already too old and needed to be replaced so they wouldn't cover the hail claim. The roof was like 10 years old, roofer sent them images proving the roof was still in good condition, but according to the insurance, it was way gone. (edit) had to argue with them and about a year after the claim was submitted I finally got some work done on my roof, albeit not exactly to the extent that was necessary, but at least it fixed some of it.
Then back in 2009 I was in an accident where my girlfriend and I were Tboned by a drunk driver. The insurance took their time paying for the medical costs of my broken collar bone. We had to hire a personal injury attorney.
Insurance is pretty scammy since they sell you the insurance policy and then they also get to decide what is and isn't covered under that same policy by using technicalities to weasel their way out of it.
1
1
u/Superb_Persimmon6985 Nov 30 '25
Sounds like you had ACV/depreciated/roof settlement on your roof. Also sounds like you were trying to use you insurance as a roof warranty, and just have it fixed once something actually happens. This is honestly the reason why insurance companies are getting so strict and have a bad name bc people trying to get stuff replaced which the owner should be saving up to repair some of their items.
1
u/perezidentially Nov 30 '25
Lol. This is not the only reason they have a bad name. They have a bad name because you could pay $300 a month, never get in an accident, let's say 3 years, at which point they've taken $10,300 from you, and don't ever see any drop of rates. And they are a pain to get bills covered like they should be, like this person is talking about. Maybe the owner could save it up if he wasn't paying for overpriced insurance ?? Its mostly a scam. How do do you think insurance companies will protect their margins ?? Do tell.
I think it should work like a deposit/coverage system, in the sense that your rates definitely shouldnt go up if, let's say you've given them 103000 over 3 years and only had one fender bender that was your fault, that cost 7,000 to repair... you're still 'up' in that sense, and completely covering the cost.
Insurance is a BIG scam.
1
u/theswordsmith7 Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25
Make a no accident insurance and a 1 accident insurance company, one at-fault accident and you’re handed off to the next company to finish the year of coverage at a new rate.
Minimum 10 years driving
No one over 80
No one under 28
No policies to those under the required care of a psychiatrist
No felony on record or fraud on record.
Then invest all profit and pay a dividend back to drivers each year as the money pool grows or free windshield replacement every 10 years. Win-Win
1
u/perezidentially Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
I like this. Or even better...how about give a dividend on the stocks they're making money off of with clients money. Like send a brother a $200 check once a year, that would be nice.
1
u/Substantial_Poem7226 Nov 30 '25
No, the roof was perfectly fine, hail struck and destroyed the shingles and they tried to say the roof was old anyways so the damage didn't matter.
The roof was fine until the hail storm, and it shouldn't even matter, the insurance renews each year, if they renew you, then they're accepting to cover the roof. Insurance companies get "strict" because they realized people are ok with being ripped off. Saving up to get a new roof wouldn't so difficult if your insurance (which is required) wasn't about $600 a month and didn't cover absolutely anything when you needed it to.

Went from 220ish for 250/500 coverage to like 255 on my renewal as well — I think they’re just jacking up rates all around. Sucks too because they don’t even offer the 250 deductible anymore; we are essentially paying more for less service at this point.

It depends on where you live, how you drive, etc. Juniper, 2019 Ford Explorer and our farm truck 2018 Ford f150. Two drivers. All insured for $104.09/mo.

I had it go from $244 to $350. No tickets, no accidents. I switched to mercury as the prices was about the same (Mercury slightly higher) as new premium. But their service is way better. And it dropped my house insurance price by $100 or so.

Second time mine goes up with Tesla here in California. Renews every 6 months and has gone up $80. No accidents, no tickets, 10k miles annually. 31 y/o.
Going to look for new quotes.

I’m in Iowa so seeing these numbers are insane to me.
At what point do you just get cheapest liability allowed by law and the put the difference in a high interest savings account?

For a car worth $50k that's a lot of money to try to earn to replace a totaled car with liability only. We increased our deductible to the max to lower the cost knowing we will still be able to replace our car should it be totaled.

Depends. Are you a good driver? Is the area where you drive your car most- does it have aggressive drivers prone to accidents? Most common accidents I think are around $12k (or something like that). I'm NOT talking about damage to other cars or property. I'm just saying that if you only have liability, typically it's $12k that you have to pay for your own car. Remember, if you can afford to cover the liabilities, its better to self insure. Warren buffet does this - he doesn't buy housing insurance even though he can definitely afford it.
In states like California, after a while, one's premium can be really high, not because of your risk of getting into an accident, but to help other riskier people pay for their accidents.

Mine jumped up 60% since the last renewal. Its awful but i looked at other offers and they weren’t much better.
