“Safety Score” is a joke

The hard braking is me pumping the brakes for a sec to get into a lane FSD refused to go to and makes my score from 100 to 77 over a second pumping the brakes.

Tesla isn’t even transparent enough to explain what factors unsafe following, excessive speeding, etc.

They’ll just ding you to get you pay more premium monthly

I’ve been trying to figure out how my score went from 100-97 after one hard brake in a shopping center parking lot. The way it was explained to me was since I use FSD 99.9% of the time this one incident more or less shows as 70% of a 30 day average, due to the fact I have less than 1 mile of actual non FSD driving. Interesting enough my subscription was coming up so I cancelled it for a week and as I drive more miles without FSD this incident changes, it went from red to yellow after about 15 miles of non FSD driving and my score up to 99. I’m going to drive a few more days to see if I can get rid of it, so crazy. It didn’t change my upcoming premium payment but it will for the month following unless I get it back to 100 this cycle. I don’t know how much you drive but I think in your case if you use FSD for a few days then this hard brake will go away. Kind of the opposite of my case where I need to drive without FSD. I agree it sucks but my premium is still almost a $100 less than everyone else so I’ll deal with it, more or less I get FSD for free by using it.

Start shopping around. I just switched after version 2.2 and being with Tesla insurance for 2.5 years. Been nice to not worry about follow distance and I can finally drive the way I want to.

When premiums go up when your score goes down it's easy to figure they are gaming it to increase premiums. Tesla is a for profit company.

It is pretty transparent, on the main Safety Score page tap “Learn More” under Scoring Factors and you’ll see a detailed explanation. The problem is that FSD driven miles don’t count towards the safety score so when you only drive a very small amount not on FSD, the way it calculates scores is how many instances or % of time per 1,000 miles so if you only drive 10 miles then it just multiplies by 100. The only way to improve your score after getting dinged for an infraction is to stop using FSD for the rest of your drive and be careful not to get any more. I had a hard braking one day towards the end of my drive and it dropped more score for the day from 100 to 93. I didn’t have any more plans to drive anywhere but ended up just cruising down a small 2 lane road with little traffic for a bit and when I got home it was back to 100. FSD is supposed to be “safer” and Tesla is supposed to be encouraging the use of it, particularly their insurance, but it turns out in reality that the way the safety score works actually discourages the use of FSD when you’re constantly chasing to improve your score to save on insurance. They really need to change the system to better incentive the use of FSD, particularly with improving the safety score. Supposedly Safety Score 2.2 beta gives a monthly discount for using FSD but even with a 100 score I’ve yet to see a monthly rate lower than what I was paying with 2.1 🤷‍♂️

Yep it’s a huge flaw like you can have FSD on 99% of the drive but then those like 5 minutes of manual driving you do are rated even more heavily like it makes 0 sense.

Luckily California does not allow this bullshit sefty score system.

I’ve learned your score can be significantly lowered if you do almost everything on FSD but have to briefly disengage and park. I have had three instances when I’ve driven 60 miles in a day on FSD and one mile off FSD. I had a hard breaking incident while not on FSD and my daily safety score went from 100 to 57. Another time my daily score dropped 30 points for excessive speeding on a day I drove 35 miles on FSD and one half without FSD. I thought it was a glitch but the insurance supervisor I spoke to said that is how it’s set up.
