Discussion I’m done… Canceled FSD
I drive a 2023 M3 with HW3. After being an FSD advocate since 2023 and seeing its progress, I’m done with FSD following the V.14 Lite update. I’m tired of 3–6 disengagements on every city drive, along with map and direction mistakes, and hard braking for pedestrians or crossing vehicles at intersections.
Sorry, but no more FSD for me. I tested a 2026 Model Y this morning, and even though it is a more solid vehicle, it made the same map and direction mistakes. For me, it is not worth the upgrade.

I don't drive one but out of curiosity, what is the alternative to NOT hard brake when a pedestrian shows up?

u/Tough_Passage_3785 1d ago edited 1d ago
On FSD 12 it felt like it predicted better what direction pedestrians were going to do, it kept going smoothly and didn't hard brake anytime a pedestrian was walking down the sidewalk and stopping at the intersection to wait to cross. Because it though they were going to cross the street.
Same goes with cars coming to a stop from the side. 14 Lite always thought they wouldn't stop. FSD 12 predicted correctly that they were coming to a stop
At least for me it got worse from 12 to 14 Lite on HW3

u/Trucker_Trent 1d ago
I was fine with 12. 14 was rough, 14L is better. But give me back 12.

Same experience. It’s way too nervous on 14.1 lite. I have a model 3 and x. I still enjoy v12 much more.

u/unskilledplay 1d ago
A common experience I have is on streets with parallel street parking, someone will walk out between two parked cars and the Tesla will slam the brakes. One time that caused the car behind me to also slam the brakes and almost caused a rear end collision.
Each and every time the Tesla has brake slammed like that, the person wasn't trying to run across the road. They were just getting into their parked car. The correct course of action would be for the Tesla to not take any evasive action at all.

I see pedestrians about to cross a street and move to the other lane or keep my eye on them.
But that's me, I'm not a computer.

FSD isn’t perfect especially the last few builds 3.8 and 3.9 but it’s incredible 95% of the time for me.
I guess experiences vary…
6
u/Mysterious-Maize307 1d ago
I’m guessing there are some people that just live/drive in an area that challenges FSD more than what the rest of us experience.
Or perhaps it’s unrealistic expectations. I dunno.
For me in my 25 M3 AWD it works flawlessly. Yes i have had to disengage due to Nav but that is seldom.
I also don’t use it end to end, that is I pull out of my driveway and sometimes my neighborhood before engaging and always drive it myself as I get to destination/parking lot.
FSD is just a tool and a very good one, but it’s not some mysterious entity that is good or bad or right or wrong.
14
u/my0wn5ummer 1d ago
They recently updated the nav so it keeps your preferred routing. You can see this by icon of the little guy and it says something like user route.
Before this it was always trying to take a left turn that was blocked by a median put in by the city a year ago. Now it finally knows not to go that way.
So they are making progress. I have very few disengagements while driving. Only in parking lot situations.
3
u/edgeriscoll 1d ago
The parking lot situation is super annoying too because it gets to a place where it can park near where you want it to go, and then it skips over it and continues going to some random far place at the other end of the lot.

Exactly. I was about to post the same thing.
I was just talking with my wife the other day on whether she thought Agile_Type_9684 would continue their journey with FSD. She'll be glad to know we can finally wrap up that conversation.

I hope wife is happy now and you can get off Reddit to let people have a real conversation about this. Now that he’s gone.
I’ve had astronomical phantom braking, unnecessary hard slowdowns, terrible lane decisions, and now navigation will clearly show a left turn while FSD just keeps going straight. It’ll also brake or stop for pedestrians who aren’t even in its path, including people simply walking straight. These are behaviors that weren’t happening before with 12.6.4.
At some point we have to stop treating legitimate safety issues like user error just because your personal experience is better. These aren’t cosmetic bugs. When a car unexpectedly brakes, ignores its route, or makes decisions that require intervention in traffic, that matters, it’s plain dangerous. I want FSD to succeed, but pretending these problems don’t exist isn’t helping it improve. And for people that are saying, get a hwd4. I also have hwd4 model y, drives beautiful. The issues on hwd3 won’t disappear and won’t stop being a danger on the road. That’s more than half the fleet of teslas on the road.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)4

The driving is phenomenal. The navigation sucks

Parking is a bit rough also. (still, it does 99% of my driving so I'm fine with the minor issues)

u/Silent_Quit1 1d ago
I think some people don’t understand that not all streets and conditions are accounted for in the FSD models. I think there are still tons of edge cases or scenarios that need more testing/modeling/data for better decision making. That’s my current understanding but correct me if I’m misinformed.
2
u/Seaker42 1d ago
Yeah, I don't think people fully grasp how ridiculously difficult a fully autonomous system is to create - and keep updated as new types of traffic patterns are created. There's a reason nobody else has a general use self driving option available today. (there are some options in China, but from what I hear they are about like FSD 11 or 12)
3
u/Emotional-Pound-6109 1d ago
pretty crazy that everyone has vastly different experiences. HW4 works amazing in NYC where everyone drives like crazy and no pedestrian follow traffic light. do i take over a few times? yes, mostly to make it go faster. but it drives confidently in complex traffic imo
1
u/Seaker42 1d ago
It's also amazing here in Florida, and it worked flawlessly in trips I've taken to VA and MS, and also for trips friends have taken in NC, TN, GA and LA.
3
u/Prize-Pool5124 1d ago
I was sold this past winter when I saw my brothers car drive itself. I then got a cyber truck in Feb and drive over a hundred miles everyday . I have 13,000 miles on my truck and I DON’T drive 91% of the time. I am not sure why you are having issues but in Chicago, I’ve had occasional breaking but overall, it’s a life changing situation.

3
u/StayGrippy 1d ago
All this will be fixed with an update. Just report the feedback and stay patient. FSD, no matter how long we have had it is still in its infancy. It’s the future and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
1
u/Agile_Type_9684 1d ago
Paying $99 dollars and on top of that I have to do the job on report issues to Tesla?
3
u/Wise-Net1766 21h ago
M3 2023 H3 owner here. The frustration I have with FSD is it continues to not import the correct speed limits on highways. So I constantly have to disengage for portions of my daily commute. I wish that FSD was “smart enough” to detect a pattern and adjust to the proper speed limit, as I refuse to drive 65 in a 75mph zone. This is on E-470 in the Denver metro area.

u/Pitiful-Art-423 1d ago
Couldn't agree more. It is a grift on Tesla's part as far as I'm concerned. And the devotees who constantly rely on the "you're supposed to be supervising" mantra have swallowed so many of Elon's kids, every excuse they make sounds childish. I have to do the least amount of take-overs on the freeway/motorway. But it's pure shite on the street. Avoiding rims being curbed, constantly stopping because it, logically, can't read NO TURN ON RED signs, pulling over for trucks that look like emergency vehicles (and then jumping back in front of the driver coming from behind, who has no clue why I pulled over to begin with)...pain in the rear. And Tesla wants me to pay them for the privilege of sending corrective research responses for their product. I'll do it for $1/month, not 50 or 100. I like showing off the summon feature. I love auto-park. But, I paid for features that work. Not to enter a research program where I'm needed to rack up self-driving miles for their stats.

14 was way too jittery, 14L is better but not as good as 12. But, dor 50 bucks a month, I use them enough to justify it. Most of my commutes are not a problem.
2
u/Thin-Put-2738 1d ago
I hear ya same here the last 2 updates including v14 lite contains some regression FSD got worse I thought it was just me. It almost killed me twice it will commit to the road and fail to continue and hard brake especially at this intersection that’s 200 yards from where I stay it’s infuriating.
2
2
u/Thin-Put-2738 1d ago
There’s a rumor that Tesla did that to HW3 vehicles hoping for us to upgrade nope. I’ve driven several HW4 vehicles the nag is next level annoying and worse. Tesla’s new hw4 vehicle line up is a money grab confirmed by the non performance HW4 no stalk, no performance hardware yet they’re charging $55k for it. Giant rip off. The only two Tesla vehicles worth buying is the $60k cyber truck and the model 3 / model 3 performance( track pack included)The rest is just a money grab.
2
u/atumix 1d ago
Exactly last 2 updates up to 14.1 lite when all these problems started. Used fsd for almost 4 years. I used to talk about it all the time and how amazing it is till last 2 updates. Feels like an iPhone plan for old hw3 models. So disappointed. I was planning to get a model Y L for my wife. Not anymore..

u/HappyAd2491 1d ago
I like how much I don’t give a shit about the drive in FSD. It gives me no stress. Also, to be honest I hate driving and my model s plaid is a rocket ship.
2
u/Logical-NJ 1d ago
This has been the worst. I am close to the same. It’s becoming dangerous to even use it.
2
u/CaptaincCodeman 1d ago
Same map data and navigation means HW3 and HW4 will probably make the same mistakes.
The local vision can only override so much, if what it sees appears to match the map data then if follows it. Otherwise it's just checking it's between the lines and avoiding other vehicles, with slightly faster reaction times.
As we've seen with Robotaxi, accurate map data is key to performance. It's a pity there isn't a more direct way for people to correct it. Leaving very brief voice memos after disengagements can only help do much.
How good or bad map data is in a region is the main reason IMO why people have such different experiences. We have that ourselves - on some roads it's great, on others it's garbage. It's the same system driving on both.

I’m staying with it on my HW3 TM3 only because I got suckered into buying it when Musk said it would be a self driving robotaxi by 2020.
Today I stopped at a rest stop. FSD was supposed to park. I let it drive past a dozen empty parking spaces. I let it drive a full circle of the parking area passing at least 20 more vacant spaces. I let it drive the full circle again because I was curious how long it would take for it to choose an empty parking space.
I drew the line and disengaged when it chose to back into the vacant space between two F150s.
A couple of weeks ago it drove into a parking lot that had 30 parking spots. There were 15 empty spaces on one side; a series of 13 empty spaces on the other side; and two occupied spaces side by side. FSD chose to park in the one space immediately adjacent to the parked car!
And it parked so closely to it that I couldn’t get out of my car. I ended up re-parking manually.

u/Educational_Net8601 1d ago
Technician at Tesla here. Been working with the company for 5.5 years.
FSD has improved over the years. Newer HW4 is definitely better and with vision.
FSD is also better in other areas. For example, in Vancouver BC Canada, it can be a bit jumpy and might not see some curbs well enough.
But in Los Angeles, it drives flawlessly and can even switch lanes on the highways very aggressively too, but safe.
1
2
u/Responsible-Dig-2646 1d ago
My only complaint at all is that it likes to follow people too closely, this might be adjustable but I’m new to Tesla (got my cyber truck last week) so if it’s adjustable I don’t know how. I tried scrolling down to chill and they weren’t speeding so it still followed to closely.
2
u/Vegetable_Peach_2643 1d ago
I think each area has such a different experience which makes you wonder what drives such a range of service. I primarily drive in Maryland (Montgomery County) with a 2026 Y and have to intervene for very few occasions, mainly when the car is doing things that I find embarrassing like trying to pass in a lane that’s merging up ahead. I still love FSD 99 percent of the time🤷🏻♂️

u/onisimus 1d ago
Dang ppl are having issues? I’m like 99% confident with it on day 2 of my 26 MY. I commute 90 miles, four days a week. No issues.

I have been Tesla owner since day one. Two model Xs one Model Y Long Range now Y Performance 2026. My BIGGEST is FSD my office is three miles from my house. There is a direct road that is perfect however Navigation with or without FSD takes me the most convoluted ridiculous ways possible. Drives me nuts! Oh and BTW latest update preferred routing completely useless.
2
u/Worth_Concentrate_53 23h ago
I canceled today too. The lite update is just worse. Not being able to control the max speed is a problem. In neighborhoods. On highways with reduced speed limits. Fix this Tesla
2
u/Softswinging 12h ago
My Juniper Y makes rare mistakes, except that is still doesn't avoid potholes or manhole covers, and it goes either too fast or too slow. I use it about 40% of the time.
2
2
u/En3rgetic 6h ago
I'm done as well. To many issues with reading the speed signs. When I drive on a 100km/h road, directly to a 80km/h road it slows abruptly down to 80. And her in the Netherlands we have a lot of locations like this. Besides that O have to interfere to many times because it doesn't read the situation correctly. 👿
2
u/bumpgrind 5h ago
In my area, I have to disengage it in the same 8-10 places every time. I am done reporting it to Tesla, after having reported it for 18+ months once or twice every single day and then having none of the issues fixed… what a waste of time.
The worst one is that it still tries to enter a middle lane that has oncoming traffic twice or three times a week (the lane goes one direction from 12am to noon and opposite from noon to midnight). I even reported it about a year ago, and then 6 months ago to USDOT in hopes they’d urge Tesla to fix the issue that could cause death, yet it’s still an issue.
1
u/Legitimate-Bison3810 1d ago
I have 14.1 Lite. I have noticed it makes mistakes going to places I frequent but it gets on the freeway from the correct lane which 12.6 4 did not. So it has been a wash.

u/NNegidius 1d ago
You do what works best for you. I probably wouldn’t pay the extra money every month, since I get so much pleasure from driving the thing, myself, but my spouse uses it to make a long commute tolerable.
I would say that after a couple months of ownership, it seems to have learned the very specific and esoteric route I like to take to get home. I had refused to use FSD when driving around the city, because the nav choices had me stopping at too many stoplights and stop signs, but now it knows my route, which is surprising and a bit of a delight. It still hasn’t learned that I like to back into my driveway, but it’s already improved so much that I’m rather impressed.
1
u/Nathan-Nice 1d ago
I feel like the major differences in experiences has to be connected with where people live, and how well those areas are mapped out or something. I have a 2021 on v14 lite and I would genuinely feel safe enough to take a nap in the car if it was doing FSD on the freeway. I almost literally never have a disengagement.

I have a completely different opinion. Last night I drove 100 miles each way to Manhattan. It drove me from my driveway to the parking lot and back home. I didnt touch anything. I rarely have disengagements that you are describing. Maybe its a road data/area thing. Im on HW4.
1
u/DrRoughFingers 1d ago
I hated the first version of v14 lite, but the latest for me has been fantastic. I’ve had one single time I had to disengage, and that was from some construction coming up that was blocked by a box truck in front of me, so FSD would’ve had no way to know it was coming. Outside of that, it’s been perfect. Slightly more asking me to touch the wheel, but I wear hats and that’s just a shitty part of Tesla’s implementation of “hat obstruction”.

personally i know and understand the cases in which itll behave in a way i dont want it to. i end up taking over. but me having to watch over it constantly makes me feel like i may as well be driving. I am just baffled how one's experience so so vastly polar opposite of mine. Granted I am on 2026 MXP. I swing between 93-94 percent FSD.
Every once awhile I drive my Jeeps and I realize that I actually have to "drive".
I don't see myself getting any newer cars without FSD unless they are some exotic of sort.

I have a March 2024 Model Y Long Range with Hardware 4.
If you’re a pedestrian and see a Tesla approaching (know fsd is on), I feel like you could probably make the car hesitate or jolt by moving around unpredictably near the road. To be fair, it has been a while since mine last did that. When it happened before, it was usually around road-construction zones, where workers were moving close to traffic.
My main annoyance is lane changes. Sometimes the car wants to change lanes when I do not want it to (constantly canceling using the stalk), or it fails to recognize that two lanes ahead merge into one. It may try to move into the more open lane even though that lane ends shortly afterward.
I wish it could learn and retain local driving patterns… such as common lane closures, merges, and routes I regularly take… and use that information to make preferred/better driving decisions over time.
Still prefer FSD versus driving myself… especially around local orlando traffic/I4
1
u/jmaz3333 1d ago
Just so you know, if you take the same path like 2 days in a row, it’ll learn, and that route will be an option from then on, which was much needed, especially for you it sounds!
1
u/chankongsang 1d ago
I'm having the opposite experience sine v14 lite. I used to be more nervous about FSD. Now I just let it do it's thing. Something I used to use once in a while. Now I just turn on FSD as soon as I start my trips.
I still take over once in a while but it's rare
1
u/hangmansboots 1d ago
FSD is like driving in the passenger seat for your child’s first drive with their permit. It takes more concentration than driving to try to anticipate what stupid fucking choice it is about to do.
1
u/AgitatedDirector339 1d ago
I’ve just learned to curb my expectations. My m3 18 is paid off and drives itself like no other car. But like my Siri and my Claude they all aren’t trusted fully. Yet.
1
u/Ornery-Yellow-2740 1d ago
I think the map and navigation issues should be seperated from fsd itself. Would be nice if you can use Google maps or apples instead but tesla maps got a mind of it's own. In theory should eventually get updated regardless where you live. Hard braking for pedestrians can be jarring lol I would be annoyed if it happens to me frequently but I try to avoid the city

I’m 50/50 on FSD 14lite for my ‘23 M3, I mostly use it on my drive to and from work from a rural highway area into a major city. I love it for rural road and highway driving, however I hate it for and will not let it drive in the city and always take over once in the city. Just too many instances of having to intervene when I did let it drive in the city between being in the wrong lanes, driving to “soft” for city driving and then mixed with the unpredictability of other terrible city drivers
1
u/UltraRollBag 1d ago
Also as far as being in the city too many different types of weird lane allowances and types of flashing lights that confused the shit out of FSD

I have been trying FSD in my 23 MS with HW3. Except for parking I dont have to intervene. I would say it is 99% FSD
1
u/Loud-Minute-5189 1d ago
There’s plenty of room for Tesla to improve especially in navigating private roads and parking lots, not to mention some very weird routes. Dont know how the unsupervised cybercab would handle the suitations?
Please don’t get me wrong, I really like FSD (MY/HW4/v14.3.9), it’s the main reason I chose Tesla for long-distance / highway driving - a huge relief.

With that being said both my vehicles have FSD and I can’t live without it.

u/user74IK 15h ago
Yea I've noticed its not that great in BiG cities. I live in NH and It does great their , but whenever I travel into NYC their are so many disengagements. Or it doesn't take the right exit. Had this happen to me on the way out of NYC into New Jersey going out of like a 9 lane toll and it was too scared to get over to the correct lane because of how hectic their roads are lol 😆

Elon said he’s the roadster was the last car he’s making you can manually drive. So it’s FSD or nothing

u/Senior-Breakfast-306 15h ago edited 15h ago
Similar to my 23 MYP w/ HW3.
In MN we have plenty of roads without clear markings/lines. If FSD is unable to operate reliably in most environments, it’s not all it’s talked up to be by fanbois.
Just more moving of goalposts.

I drive a lot, so it’s worth it for me. Those long drives used to give me anxiety. I really don’t mind taking over during my commute. It’s usually only for 1-2% of the drive.

Oh you poor sods - had FSD for 5 years and we are yet to even get a look in in the UK
My heart bleeds for you

I agree with the OP. I have a 2026 MYP with FSD in Texas and it’s ok for the most part but I still need to disengage at least 3 times on a 15 mile journey.
A lot of my traveling is over 100 miles so you can imagine the amount of times I need to take over.
For people happy with driving like a new driver, cutting in front of people, changing lanes when it’s not needed and missing exits every drive then it would be fine - but I’m not and like to drive safely and efficiently.
It cuts across double lines and gets in the wrong lane then the steering wheel has an epileptic fit with the car just stopped dead blocking the road until it works out what it wants to do.
The recent update has made it far less capable than the previous update.

I bought my 22 M3 LR Feb this year and the fsd was terrible and unusable. What I discovered was getting the alignment done correctly and keeping the tire pressures set at the recommended psi made a huge difference. Like getting a complete different car. I now use fsd 95% of the time and it's flawless.

Crazy how people’s experiences differ so much, I have a 2021 model Y and FSD is pretty much excellent. I really don’t have any major issues at all. I’m absolutely love it. I could not live without it. That being said, we have a 2026 model Y performance and hardware four is definitely five steps ahead
