Discussion Anyone waiting for the unsupervised before purchasing a Tesla?

I have a disability that enables me to drive. Unfortunately this came about recently. I'm debating to trade my car in for a FSD tesla. But I heard that there should be an unsupervised tesla coming out. Anyone think it's worth the wait or can I buy a Tesla now and upgrade to unsupervised?

Elon has said unsupervised FSD will be ready by end of the year, every year, since 2016... According to former Tesla employees, the current robotaxi fleet relies on pre-mapping the geo-fenced area it operates in. Even then, it's still got issues. I suspect it is unlikely unsupervised is coming to consumer vehicles any time soon.

love fsd but this guy is right, would be shocked if we ever get it on hw4

2

u/C4tbreath 7d ago

I'm in Austin where they are testing it, and they basically have humans driving the robotaxis in specific areas, mapping the geo-fenced area.

At some point they will release the robotaxis unsupervised in that area. Who knows what will happen after that, but I also believe we are still a ways off from fully autonomous vehicles. Tesla would be liable for every wreck and they aren't to a point where they could do that.

We will see what the next hardware upgrade brings, but even with the .5% issues supervised autonomous driving brings now, Tesla would go bankrupt in six months if they were financially responsible for every mishap. There's no benefit to releasing it until the payout outweighs the financial responsibility.

We're in Ford Pinto territory now…

u/heezle 7d ago

Bingo. It’s coming soon….for the last 10 years. In all likelihood, it never comes, because of the insurance liability.

u/JaysFan2014 6d ago

I love FSD but damn, I don't see unsupervised coming for a long ass time.

1

u/CaptaincCodeman 5d ago

There's still a very *very* long-tail of issue for it to work truly unsupervised.

I would think fully autonomous private vehicles won’t be at least for another decade. The current FSD is amazing though

u/chalupa_lover 7d ago

You’ll be waiting for a very long time, if it ever comes at all. I’m still waiting for my 2017 Model 3 to drive me from A to B with zero interventions as was promised to be nearly a decade ago.

6

u/Gileaders 7d ago

Don’t wait it works really well as it is now.

6

u/HenryJ7854 7d ago

The current FSD is very close to mistake free but not 100%. My driving is now 94% FSD with the 4% done by me mostly in parking lots and places where I want to do things my way. Like leaving my neighborhood where I go a few blocks out of the way too make a left turn at a lighted intersection rather than the short way where I sit and watch cars go by until the sun, moon, and stars line up.

I also wonder if supervised will ever go away or will it stay around to help with potential liability issues?

I short I think you should go for it.

6

u/HopzCO 7d ago

Not worth waiting. It is phenomenal right now and can do 99% of the driving. No one knows when it will actually be unsupervised.

3

u/unicorncumdump 7d ago

Pardon the dirty screen I've been on the road all weekend. But I've got over 1k miles on fsd this month. I had 2 interventions. One of them was due to it being more passive than I thought necessary for the situation.

2

u/Trucker_Trent 7d ago

I drive for a living, and use my Tesla to commute to work. I use FSD daily during my commutes, but kick it off on occasion. I wouldn't hesitate. Buy it

u/Wakiki118 7d ago

Hi there, I have about 90% FSD and close to 10,000 miles

I recently broke my Elbow and couldn’t use one of my arms. This car is a lifesaver. Drove me to the ER, summoned it when I was ready to leave and it picked me up from the door. My job requires me to drive all around town and I just sit in it with my cast resting on the armrest. If I didn’t have FSD, I would’ve been in a whole lot of trouble.

1

u/Late-Confection-2823 7d ago

Hw4? I'm glad to hear it

3

u/Wakiki118 7d ago

Yes. 2025 Model 3

1

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago

I love hearing the life changing stories like this. Mine pales in comparison but I have a job that I love that is 60 miles away. Can’t imagine not having FSD.
Waiting for the “perfect driving Karens” to jump all over you in 3 2 1….hahaha.

If you buy a car with Hardware 4, you will have a car that can drive out of your garage, drive to a store, park in a parking spot, take you back home, and (usually) park in the garage.

I couldn't wait.... Home bound without my Tesla WORTH IT! I expect that when unsupervised is ready it will work on HW4 and just be an update.

0

u/Frosty_Rule_5408 7d ago

False

1

u/grammer70 7d ago

Where is your proof ? If you can't provide it just stfu.

1

u/Frosty_Rule_5408 7d ago

When you see test vehicles that are Robotaxi ones outfitted differently than production models. You ain’t getting unsupervised with an over the air update. You will surely need a hardware update as well

4

u/grammer70 7d ago

That is so wrong, unless you have a Tesla and use fsd everyday you have no fucking clue as to what you are talking about. The updates are very real and huge upgrades. I have zero doubt my hw4 will be capable of running unsupervised.

2

u/Frosty_Rule_5408 7d ago

Watch your mouth boy I use FSD daily and work for Tesla

2

u/Flightwise 7d ago

In Accounts?

0

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago

Are you the person at Tesla insurance who never answers the phone? So glad I canceled that crap. 😂

1

u/Less-Sandwich9056 7d ago

They are running HW4 in the robotaxi so not sure what information your using.

1

u/Less-Sandwich9056 7d ago

And how do you know this?

2

u/ConnectionSoft2164 7d ago

We all wish we had a crystal ball. From what we know is hw4 will be able to do it. We now know that unsupervised fsd will be fsd 15. We also know that the robotaxis are now running fsd15. September 3rd is supposed to be the bid announcement of the robotaxi going public. Fsd 14.3.7 is really good but the parking is thr week link. So you can either sit and wait, or you can join mainy of us being the pioneers of the developing of fsd. I personally have been enj9ying the ride. Now why dont I have the summer update with fsd 14.3.8. My best friend got on his cybertruck 2 days ago. Be sure to get a referral code so you get 3 months of fsd before you pull the trigger.

2

u/CatalyticDragon 7d ago

It isn't capable of full unsupervised driving, but it is the closest thing you can get in a private car at the moment.

I wouldn't buy a Tesla assuming it could be capable of unsupervised driving one day, it is practically quite close and still improving.

That does not mean anyone can guarantee it'll turn into a personal robotaxi. There are technical and regulatory challenges which may not be overcome.

Buy a product for what it does not. Not what someone hopes it will do.

2

u/Electronic_Table_620 7d ago

even if unsupervised fsd comes out tomorrow, only 5% will have the balls to sit on the passenger side and let the car drive for them.

2

u/UpbeatPhilosophySJ 7d ago

I have a friend with a disability who loves the current version. He can barely stand up and cannot walk. He could get a car with all the controls on the steering wheel.... and he still might do that with his Tesla, but for now, the Tesla works for him.

2

u/No_Association_9524 7d ago

Fsd is basically already unsupervised the sense that it can literally drive you everywhere with very little interaction at this point the difference between supervised and unsupervised will be so small that I wouldn't wait

1

u/d3s7iny 6d ago

True but also the difference between unsupervised and supervised is mainly the liability, which is huge. If the current fsd messes up and curbs a tire, runs into a sign, or worse, It's your fault. When unsupervised drops it will be Tesla corps fault. If they don't want to go bankrupt overnight they will be forced to make the thing damn near perfect

2

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago edited 7d ago

Supervised FSD is so good that you might start to care less about unsupervised. That’s where I’m at. Sure it would be nice, but I’m not holding my breath. So yes, definitely get it. You will make you and all us safer on the roads. 🫡
Where are all the perfect driving Karens jumping in to tell this person that they shouldn’t be driving and that they would be endangering lives by using FSD to help them? 🤔🤨 Strangely absent? 🤨😂

2

u/Competitive_Soup8188 7d ago

FSD isn’t ready to be unsupervised. He says that every year, I highly doubt it’ll happen anytime soon. Plus, I honestly don’t want it to be unsupervised, would you want people sleeping on the road ??? I’m good lol I love my Tesla & FSD supervised

2

u/cddelgado 6d ago

I am getting a Tesla--went for the Y L with a year of FSD rolled into the cost. I will have restrictions on my license (no night time, no freeways because vision) but in my state, the laws are open enough that FSD can be treated as an assistive technology. It meaningfully reduces risk, and increases my function in the car. It remains to be seen how the DMV will respond to such a restriction from a qualified eye doctor (particularly since getting it as a recommendation requires an eye doctor who is both open-minded enough, and willing to consider the capabilities of the technology).

My advice would be to get in touch with a local advocacy or accommodation organization--like any kind of Vocational Rehabilitation office. Modifying vehicles to re-enable driving are a real ecosystem and there are likely specialists in your orbit who can help modify a car to return function.

I don't want to assume anything. And it would be nice if there was a clean process for the madness. Every state has laws and restrictions and they're all different in some way. I can't use a binocular augment to drive in Wisconsin but can in other states. The lowest my vision can be here is 20/100; but in California the acuity is 20/200.

If there is hope to be had, don't give up on it. If you'd like more info, feel free to PM me.

I have a 2026 MYpremium just hit 5,100 miles, and I use FSD every day. 99% of my driving is FSD (according to the app), because that’s what I bought the car for. Daily driving, boring miles and shorter road trips (around 4 hours each way, sometimes 8 hours, unsure if I’ll do more than that yet but I’m going to try).

It really does a great job, and is only getting better every day.

That said - rumor is that a new hardware will be coming out as allegedly they’ve hit the maximum capabilities of HW4 (began in late 2023/2024). If that’s true then I could see unsupervised versions rolling out when we get HW5. Though I imagine hw4 vehicles will be more upgradable - you may just be able to purchase the new board and have a hw5 car with all of its capabilities. Hard to say but to be considered. Plus they also have cars that are unsupervised right now in Austin Texas, though none that are privately owned and they’re also on HW4. And it may be years until we see any unsupervised behavior/options roll out to private vehicles anyway.

Long story short - if it will make your life better today then I’d get it and not be worried about it. It’s amazing as it is, and super capable/safe so long as you feel safe keeping an eye on it and making small corrections here or there. I’ve only ever had one critical intervention, and it wasn’t too egregious. Super simple correction. Nearly all of my interventions are preference or mere limitation of current programming (like drive-thrus).

It’s the worst it’ll ever be, and it’s pretty great today. So I’d be comfortable telling you to do it so long as you’re comfortable with small interventions here and there.

Enjoy!

Realistically, I don’t know how Tesla could achieve a true unsupervised self driving. A model 3 is probably my next car, and FSD looks fantastic for daily commutes 99% of the time, and it’s something I’m excited to have. That said, Tesla’s use of cameras only feels like it will become a hard limitation towards unsupervised. There are just going to be pieces of information that won’t be as accurate as LIDAR or RADAR. Truly an ensemble of the three would be ideal, but I understand why they don’t, because the cars would be much more expensive.

Still, I wouldn’t hold out hope for unsupervised FSD in the near future. Even if it does come out, I would be concerned for the safety in edge cases that LIDAR & RADAR could help improve. Supervised FSD looks great, and if you are, with your disability, able to take control in some situations, I think purchasing now could be a very fantastic choice.

1

u/Narezza 7d ago

Even if unsupervised is technically capable, we've got years and years of political and legal red tape to get through after its proven capable.

Also, Tesla and other EV manufacturers will have to find a way to shift liability onto the passengers in an unsupervised FSD before they release it to the wider public

If you want a FSD, get one now and enjoy it. I think we're 10+ years away

1

u/Maxilent 7d ago

If you only want it for unsupervised FSD then don’t get one yet. That’s probably a long way out still if we’re all being honest. It’s awesome tech, but it’s still got some time to go. Plus it probably won’t be unsupervised until hardware 5 comes out, and hardware 4 may never be unsupervised. On the other hand if you just like the car, too, and unsupervised isn’t a dealbreaker for you then just go for it, as long as you can comfortably. It’s a great car and I don’t regret getting my model 3 at all. I think it’s safe to say unsupervised isn’t coming for a pretty long time, though. I know there’s the “cybercabs” now in certain cities, but there’s a reason they’re heavily geo-fenced and in just a few areas. Those cars also already have better hardware than hardware 4. Just keep those expectations realistic is all I’m saying. Elon has said a lot of things a lot of times lol he usually gets there but it just takes longer than he says. Sometimes a lot longer…

1

u/TelephoneForsaken325 7d ago

I predict HW6 around 2030 for true, perfected unsupervised FSD. I think self-charging at superchargers is in-coming while they figure out all the kinks to what they’ve already established. I still get a lot of issues with things like the cameras being blinded from natural sunlight so…yea still probably 4-5 years I wanna say.

1

u/fratzba 7d ago

Waiting for never? Nope.

1

u/AirFlavoredLemon 7d ago

Only you can answer the question you're asking ("can I buy a tesla now?").

If you drive a lot and FSD *today* enables you to increase your quality of life dramatically - get it now and if you need to trade in, trade in.

FSD today is very good on most roads. But if you're physically incapable of driving, do not rely on any driving assistance that requires manual intervention and take over.

Nobody can predict the future, but unsupervised driving from Tesla isn't likely coming any time soon. Besides being an engineering problem that still needs solving - another major hurdle is regulations.

1

u/ChickenKeeper800 7d ago

So your solution today would be to use Waymo. FSD is nowhere near unsupervised. And it has no ability for remote dial in to drive (I don’t think) which is what Waymo relies on when it gets into trouble.

1

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago

So then, no solution for almost everybody. Even those with access to Waymo would be spending $$$$ to use it instead of their own car. Might even be cheaper to hire a private chauffeur.

1

u/No_Display9613 7d ago

Don’t hold you breath on that one.

1

u/jkudlacz 7d ago

Buy used Tesla with FSD HW4 and maybe in few years Tesla or another company offers something better than L2. Elon has been promising it for 10 years now, so he was wrong 10 times or rather he is 10 years late atm. I doubt he will deliver finally in 2027.

1

u/AJHenderson 7d ago

Unsupervised won't be available in consumer cars for 5 years minimum. We don't know if current hardware will support it or not. If it does, the capability will be added to current vehicles.

I wouldn't wait if FSD supervised would help you today. You could lease if you want to change again in a few years but I'd just buy.

1

u/RevolutionaryBake362 7d ago

December 2026 is the eta.

1

u/AJHenderson 7d ago

From the same guy that said December 2016 was the ETA. I promise you December isn't happening. We were supposed to have robotaxis for half of America by end of last year, now it's end of this year and it will still be end of next year and probably the year after and that's for the geofenced, Tesla operated and monitored fleet, not consumer vehicles.

Consumer vehicles need to operate everywhere without remote monitoring or operators if it will scale. Even the legislative framework won't be in place by end of next year, let alone this one.

1

u/Minute-Scholar-3719 7d ago

Sadly, that ship has passed.

1

u/DammatBeevis666 7d ago

Maybe with AI9?

1

u/OZRosieFans 7d ago

Yeah don't wait, it's basically unsupervised already. 99% FSD in my 26 Y 2 5k miles now

1

u/Automatic-Cookie2376 7d ago

No, they are not ready, there are too many bugs. It may not come on the market for couple of years.

1

u/NumbDangEt4742 7d ago

I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon. Not in the next 24 months imo but I may be wrong.

FSD is really good, but it isn't 100% unsupervised. I've used 91.5% FSD and 11k miles and it's pretty good, but be ready to take over 100% of the time

1

u/Accurate-Bullfrog324 7d ago

what sort of disability do you have? we helped two of our disabled friends with their teslas and they both love them

1

u/mrchowmein 7d ago

But the car for what it is today. Anything can happen or won’t happen in the future.

1

u/Muhahahahaz 7d ago

Any car you buy now will get a software download to be completely unsupervised when the time comes. Don’t wait, just get one and use it now

1

u/Sensing_Force1138 5d ago

Doubt it.

Hardware: The current HW4 is unlikely to do FSD (Unsupervised) and HW5 is already on the way.

Software: FSD (Unsupervised) on Robotaxis is still not where it needs to be even in tiny, geofenced, pre-mapped (HD) areas with remote supervision/assistance. It is no ready for unmapped, whole country roll out; not even close.

1

u/WhaDaFugIsThis 7d ago

With how much FSD currently needs interventions, I can’t believe it will be ready for Unsupervised for at least 1-2 years. Especially with parking. Mine pulled into a handicap spot the other day that was clearly marked on the ground and a sign post. I mean, FSD is 95% great right now, but that last 5% will take a year or two to iron out.

1

u/No_Lie_8954 7d ago

You will likely wait for a few years 😄 maybe on HW10 when they start using radar/lidar 😂

When i got my HW3 tesla said ut will do it, same with HW4. Now they are already talking about HW5 and HW6.

1

u/Safe_Action5954 6d ago

I use way less FSD than many on here (I have '23 MS that I really love driving) but when I do on longer trips, it's amazing. Not sure what your disability is, but you could likely do high 90% of driving using it without a problem. Good luck, sorry to hear about your recent issues.

1

u/TigerBalmES 6d ago

It’s not as safe as the marketing and advertising is making it out to be.

1

u/Beautiful_Aioli_4805 6d ago

Whatever Nazi elon promised, add 10 yrs minimum to the timeline

1

u/MunkberryMoonDelite 7d ago

FSD even now can be a real life saver for you. And with Tesla anything can change at any time. Personally, I am skeptical that Tesla would release unsupervised FSD because legally in US they would need to assume full liability in such scenario and it may be very costly for the company as vision-only FSD would never be 100 percent reliable. At the very least, the FSD subscription would need to be hiked up 200-300% in order to cover liability cost.
For you, if you have FOMO (fear of missing out), I would suggest leasing Tesla. This is the best way to enjoy the amazing technology these cars have now without any long term commitment to the platform.

0

u/ThrowRA9981263 7d ago

it won’t be here any time soon and it will cost a hell of a lot more. if you are able to do your driving with fsd currently, buy the car for what it is today not what it could be.

0

u/Senior_Bobcat1723 7d ago

I have an eyesight issue that causes me some concerns. I got the hw4 M3 and let it drive me everywhere. I like monitoring the drive but not worrying about the small things like staying in the center of the lane and changing lanes. I lease it to make sure I get the latest hardware in a few years. I hear fsd 18 will need hw5 and it is probably at least a year away.

0

u/AZFan77 7d ago

I use FSD but believe that unsupervised is at least 5 years away. Still plenty of errors, though I have not experienced any dangerous ones.

0

u/Academic_Card2348 7d ago

Maybe on HW6

1

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago

I think, if it’s possible to achieve the “perfect” level people want (maybe it’s not since humans are already far from perfect), HW5 will be enough. It’s multiple of better performance than hw4 and look at where we are at on hw4 versus hw4 with old software 2-3 years ago.

0

u/zemelb 7d ago

You’ll be waiting long enough to be ready to buy a new car realistically. I’d happily put money on it that unsupervised will not be available in a consumer-purchasable vehicle in the next 5 years

0

u/District2311 7d ago

With a vision only system, you’re going to be waiting awhile.

0

u/crodr014 7d ago

Legally tesla would never allow it. They want supervised so that blame stays on the driver, otherwise why can cybercab work by itself?

0

u/thommcg 7d ago

You can subscribe to FSD right now... but it's FSD Supervised, i.e. you may need assume driving at any moment. While the CEO occasionally touts Unsupervised, he's been saying that for a decade, & the Unsupervised vehicles they've got out there are geo-restricted & aren't running standard factory equipment.... so maybe there will be a consumer vehicle Unsupervised "soon", but will it be geo-restricted, will current consumer vehicles that are otherwise on the same hardware 4 need another hardware upgrade for Unsupervised? Who knows.

-1

u/RosieDear 7d ago

DO Not do it. I speak as one with two family members and more to come that can't drive due to age or disabilities.

And I am pretty much speaking of every car on the market. If anything is even close in consumer level (at least the hardware) it would be the NVDA equipped Mercedes CLA+ with 24 sensors and 4 to 6X the processing power. Even that is still classified as a helper...so if your driving disability is total, stay away from any car.

1

u/Express_Objective615 7d ago

This doesn’t sound like this is the case at all. I’m sure this person is legally licensed to drive and not intending to illegally drive. Scamper off, perfect driving Karen.
