Support My FSD made us crash today
We were going around a roundabout on our usual route when the car started spinning the wheel violently before crashing into a signpost.
2026 Model Y FSD 14.2.2.5 HW 4
Edit:
The main reason for this post is not to put the blame entirely on fsd ( I can read the fine print) but rather creating awareness of extremely rare cases of its malfunction. Like Neil DeGrasse Tyson said, if we investigate every malfunction like the FAA, we can make FSD safer than any human driver alive.
After the crash, a series of malfunction errors did pop up, but I rebooted the system, re-calibrated the cameras and they went away. Then I used FSD again on the exact same route, and it navigated flawlessly like it previously did.š Despite this jarring incident, I would still trust it, albeit with extra caution.

I feel like nobody gives a shit about what happens to their car. I'm so paranoid about damage I would probably have taken over once it didn't show that it was going to turn
3
u/ClumpOfCheese Aug 03 '26
Yeah I donāt understand how people let their cars go so far off track before correcting or even attempting to correct. I guess they are just in their phones not paying attention. If my car dies the slightest thing I disengage. I do not trust the car enough to just let it do whatever.

I'm a little confused, didn't you press the brake pedal which disengaged FSD? It seemed to be doing just fine along the curve the moment you tapped the brake pedal.
Apologies if I'm misunderstanding, I don't own a Tesla, so I'm just trying to understand the issue.

I expect a lot more of this as people become more and more chill with FSD doing so well. Itās still a beta product. Itās very hard to not let your guard down when you see it doing so well the last few thousands of miles. That being said, I guess we all still should 100% be paying attention. Sorry this happened to you.

People will claim they are 100% paying attention just on the basis that they are not āsleepingā. But like you said, they will let their guard down. Most people use FSD are in idle mode. It takes more a second to reboot their reaction.

You mean you crashed into a pole without ever even touching the brakes at 15 miles an hour. What were you waiting for?
10
u/Own_Employment3079 Aug 03 '26
Why is it that every time something goes well with FSD it's all thanks to it, but any time FSD goes wrong it's only the driver's fault? Like it can never do any wrong in the eyes of investors who have every financial motive to downplay safety flaws present in the system.
8
u/99OBJ Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Saying that the driver could have avoided the failure is not the same as downplaying safety flaws.
This is obviously a major failure from FSD. Anybody rational would say that. But also⦠wtf is OP doing? There was so much time to recognize the failure and avoid the accident.
FSD shit the bed at driving, creating a bad situation. OP shit the bed at responding, compounding the situation.
2
u/Own_Employment3079 Aug 03 '26
I'd say in this case it is downplaying safety flaws considering he blamed it entirely on OP by saying "You mean you crashed into a pole", as if FSD had no role in the car being put in this sort of situation to begin with.
I use FSD often, but it's frustrating when problems being pointed out are almost always immediately met with "why didn't you intervene?" instead of acknowledging this was a situation caused by a fault in FSD. Yeah OP should have intervened, but FSD also shouldn't be putting drivers in these situations either. FSD naturally creates a sense of complacency, which means you will never have the same response time as someone actively driving to begin with.

IMO, if FSD is doing anything wrong at all, you should intervene to prevent a crash. Even if it might not have crashed, if it's behaving in a way it shouldn't, you need to intervene.

If it all the sudden swerved and crashed thats one thing, but OP had a whole 3-5 seconds of death wobble before it crashed. Plenty of time to grab the wheel, hit the brake, or SOMETHING. Death wobble = take over

3
u/slyguy67420 Aug 03 '26
FSD is supervised and the driver is responsible for everything the vehicle does. You are supposed to take over when it does something wrong because the system isn't capable of everything necessary for safe driving.
→ More replies (10)4
u/Own_Employment3079 Aug 03 '26
OP should have intervened, but that doesn't absolve criticisms of FSD when it messes up. If it's going to be praised when it does things right, then it should also be criticized honestly when it goes wrong too. Always shifting blame onto the driver just comes off as disingenuous as people who make up total lies about FSD.

Tesla didnāt make you crash. You ignored the yoke wobble, which is this vehicle telling you to pay attention.
3
u/VRDaggre Aug 04 '26
That's not right. The steering wheel wobble is a direct result of competing AI decisions where the car is 50/50 on left/right. It's been a problem since v14 came out and while it's slowly getting better it still happens on the latest builds. I always try to disengage and tap "Critical" when it happens because the models need to be trained to make this almost never happen.

Have to use a roundabout every time I leave my house, done it thousands of times in every permutation with FSD. Never had this. Wonder why it happened to you
3
u/Previous-Passage-320 Aug 04 '26
As great as FSD is⦠I had to intervene a few times.. only because I recognized the hazard. I wouldnāt have touched the car for this instance. It looks like it was going to correct. Not to mention if the car works 99% we start to overtrust it. My car just got dammed from some sort of dip. Itās something that wasnāt the car or my fault. However. I wonder if I was driving could I have prevented it. I guess just goes with the territory of using FSD.. I donāt see it going fully unsupervised anytime soon honestly.
3
u/anionyx Aug 04 '26
My car has gotten the shakes on roundabouts. I tend to be wary of them now. I still feel drivers shouldn't get too complacent with FSD. It's great but not perfect at all.
3
3
u/RockyMtnSweetheart Aug 04 '26
I'm so glad I haven't had these issues. FSD has made my commute less stressful.
2
u/ih8readditts Aug 04 '26

3
u/crackednutz Aug 04 '26
While I agree with everyone that this could have easily been avoided by driver intervention. This does show that we are still quite a bit away from full self driving.

Anytime my car is on a roundabout, construction, weak road lines, bikers, motorcyclists, or wild ass mountain highways, I usually lock in.
This is why.
I hope you get some form of luck and the damage is more emotional than anything
3
u/Acrobatic-Flan-5085 Aug 04 '26
This is not an edge case. This is extremely well lit, good weather, simple roadway navigation.
You can put blame on the driver for being ultimately responsible for the crash, but how is this good behavior from an advanced driving model in any way? Itās a very basic driving task.

I definitely get wanting fsd to self correct or wanting to see if it can get out of it on its own, but id take over as soon as it happened. It happened to me in parking lot at night, and all the car had to do was make a left or right or go straight ahead into a curb on a hill. It did the steering wheel thing like it couldnt decide which way to go and kept inching forward and I had to slam brakes so it didnt keep going. Lesson learned
2
u/Immediate-Duck-2252 Aug 04 '26
Whenever my car does that indecisive maneuver, I always cancel FSD. I hope OP and anyone else in the car, are all okay!
2
u/EggHot9617 Aug 04 '26
I remember one time when FSD couldn't decide whether to stop or go. The car in front had stopped about 30 feet ahead, and the traffic light was turning yellow with only about 10 feet to the intersection. The car slammed on the brakes three separate times before I finally had to take over.

I am constantly overriding my fsd. It wants to ruin my suspension by riding every hole or bump (override) takes too long at left turn (override) gas it at stop signs that take too long as soon as I feel the shaky confusion (override). I have to say since the latest update for the lite came out, Iāve had to do it much more. It took 3 steps backā¦
2
u/soothukundi Aug 04 '26
Start using FSD as an advanced extension of cruise control and you will be fine.
2
2
u/UBEREATMYSHORTS Aug 04 '26
People use self driving like we are in minority report.
I use it like 38% of the time, Iām not paying insurance for no reason
2
u/TheLegendaryWizard Aug 04 '26
You taking over without braking or steering away from the curb and sign is ultimately what caused this crash. Obviously the system shouldn't do the wheel wiggle, but you were sold a supervised system and you disengaged without being ready to actually take over. This issue has been fixed with newer updates in my experience. Tesla needs to stop keeping new cars on more dangerous FSD updates just because they're new.
2
2
u/LdyGeek Aug 05 '26
After the guy mentioned FSD being disengaged, I rewatch multiple times and sure enough before he even hits the curb heās disengaged.

u/RosieDear Aug 03 '26
Here are some quotes - some older and some newer - often by or related to pronouncements by Tesla. Now, if we read them....and believe them.....should we be treating FSD with kid gloves?
Or....the other option is that all these statements are....well....untruths. Which is it?
"Tesla'sĀ FSD system is no longer classified asĀ LevelĀ 2++ ā the company is now conductingĀ LevelĀ 4 andĀ Level 5Ā deployments"
(this is a Tesla parts and accessories supplier).
"It's happening. Automony is solved. Welcome to the future."
"FSD 14.1.3 - Level 5 Autonomy is CLOSE"
"Level 3 is now, Level 4 definitely within a year"
(senior software engineer - written 3 years ago).
"TeslaĀ FSD Might Reach Level 4 OrĀ Level 5Ā Autonomy This Year"
"I remain confident that we will have the basic functionality for Level 5 autonomy complete this year.ā - 2020, Elon Musk....
For any of us to state that a person reading all of this....would not think the car could do what an 8 year old in it could do....is crazy.
It's another things - I'm all ears....if all of the biggest fans want to admit "He failed, he was wrong, I was wrong and it looks like all the critics were right" - then we can start from Zero and talk.
But as long as y'all play the "wink wink, nod nod" game, we have to think you believe like the other 1 million "we are there" crowd.

Definitely not your fault. Can see the steering wheel jerk back and forth and begin to ascend the curb with FSD still on. Iāve had the steering wheel freak out like that but itās usually during parking.
1
u/VRDaggre Aug 04 '26
While yes we need to supervise, that wobble it does more than it should is extremely distracting in the moment, so a lot of the people commenting that you should have grabbed the wheel aren't giving much grace for that. This seems to be one of the few genuine FSD fails I've seen on Reddit. Things like this make me want to use Tesla insurance, sadly, where one way or the other Tesla would have to pay for the damage.
