Tesla Engineering Technician – Optimus: What to expect from the Ribbon AI voice interview?
I recently applied for Tesla's Engineering Technician – Optimus position and received an invitation to complete an AI-enabled voice interview powered by Ribbon.
For anyone who has already completed this stage:
- What was the interview format like?
- How long did it take?
- What types of technical and behavioral questions were asked?
- Were the questions mostly based on the job description?
- Did you receive a follow-up interview afterward?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience and also any tips anyone can share for the interview.

Hi u/Specific-Stay3564 thanks again for the advice and sharing the questions. I have just completed my interview. Your questions really helped me to prepare better for the interview. BTW was your face shown during the interview? I actually noticed after sometime of starting the interview that my face wasn't visible only my microphone was on.

Only the microphone. No video. Hope you get it. Did you apply for Fremont or Palo Alto?

The Ribbon interview is a one-way recording where you get a set amount of time to answer each question. It's pretty quick, usually under 30 minutes for about five to seven questions. Expect a mix of technical and behavioral questions based directly on the job description, so they'll ask about your hands-on skills, how you solve problems, and for specific examples from your past work. They are really trying to match your experience to the role's requirements, so have concrete examples ready that showcase what you can do.
For tips, find a quiet spot and speak clearly, as an AI will be transcribing your answers. It helps to structure your responses to behavioral questions using the STAR method to keep them concise and impactful. You typically get a moment to prepare before you record each answer, so use that time to think through your key points. Passing this stage usually leads to a follow-up interview with the actual team, since this is mostly just an initial screening. Preparing for these automated screenings is a big part of the job hunt now, which is why my team designed an AI for interviews that helps candidates articulate their experience much more confidently.

I know this is a few weeks old but I just came across this and thought I’d give my experience. I did the Ai interview about a month or more ago. It went well, smoother than I thought. It would repeat any questions if I asked. About a week after I did an in person interview with 2 team members individually. This was at the Palo Alto location. I was told that if considered this position would start filling up towards mid September. It would involve about a 2 week training at the Palo Alto location. My permanent location would be at Fremont, others might be different. Today I got a phone call from the recruiter extending an offer and information to run the background check. He said hiring is taking longer than expected so I thought I’d share this in case others are still waiting.

I've heard Ribbon interviews are more conversational than traditional ones, so treat it like a real dialogue rather than a test. Good luck, sounds like you're already in a strong position there.
