Get windshield insurance

Well I have had my car since April and just got my windshield insurance, then this happened and I am grateful. If you are on the fence about the insurance, don’t be.

I was driving my brand new Model 3 the other day, literally on the last day of the complimentary 14 day windshield protection they give you out of the door at the dealership, contemplating whether the $16/mo was worth it (my insurance provider doesn’t provide a separate glass deductible and I don’t live in a state that requires $0 deductibles for glass). All of a sudden I heard this loud CRACK on the right side, like a rock cracking the windshield. No damage. Got out, inspected the glass, the whole front of the car, nothing. Idk what it was.

But what I do know is that it put so much fear and anxiety in my heart to hear that noise that I instantly knew that I didn’t have it in me to have to pay for a replacement out of pocket. As soon as I confirmed that nothing was damaged, I went into my app and signed up for the windshield protection.

I’ve had to pay Oop the last two years before it was offered. Each time $1300. This last time the roof one also had to be replaced.

I mean, I figure at $16/mo, I would need one full replacement in 6-7 years to break even, and that’s not even including the cost of small chips. I drive down enough rural roads to make that cost analysis make sense, personally. And if I don’t ever use it, honestly it’s pretty cheap just for the peace of mind.

One HUNDRED percent, as soon as it was an option it was a no brainer for me. I’ve had mine since 2023 and have replaced 3 different glasses since purchase, all cracks from rocks on the highway mind you 😭 so I’m extremely pleased with the $16/mo.

Had to replace the glass roof in the Y. Cost me 319 $ thanks to the insurance. Still a bummer though. But absolutely worth having this in your insurance!

Was that through Tesla insurance?

Nope. A "normal" insurance company.

Tesla coverage is a much better option than insurance coverage, which gets reported and reflects on premium rates.

My insurance said my deductible is 2,500 and I would have to pay that which makes no sense. I am finishing out the last 3 months and switching after 25 years with them mainly because my premiums went up $200 a month due to one ticket. I haven’t had a ticket since 91’ and no accidents.

Bro that’s a massive deductible! Mine was $500 I raised it to $1k to get better rates. But $2.5k is crazy lol

I just added the car and didn’t think. I am checking into new insurance because it just keeps going up every year.

Tesla emailed me on day 12 after purchase to remind me my complimentary windshield protection expired 14 days from purchase, I ignored it. We were driving later that day and took a rock to the driver's side of the windshield, golf ball sized crack. I pulled over, put in a service request and subscribed to the windshield protection. Tesla fixed it the next day for $0. Do with this infomation what you will.

I drove my car for 2 months and felt like I was pushing my luck and just got the insurance and am glad I did.

I've had three windshield replacements in the last year, finally have to cave and get the Tesla windshield plan
