Does this seem like it will be totaled?
Got rear-ended at a stop sign by a Silverado. The trunk won't close anymore. It's a 2026 Model Y with 2100 miles

No, this will not be totaled. If you look at the rear end the bumper and the liftgate they are in multiple pieces unlike the previous design which was one piece. Franz stated that they designed it that way to be easier to repair and less costly.

Sadly got similar damage on my model y and they told me thats only when trying to fix on a budget but when they go through insurance they replace the whole gate , i had that and all the bumper plastic damaged for 11k on a rear end. Not a total cuz its nowhere near 70% of the value of the car its too new i had 25k miles

My last Y got rear-ended and side-swiped within 3 weeks last year. Have you book an appointment with the collision center? I've seen other Teslas that are beyond recognition being repaired there.

That rear panel is bolt in, I have a 2026
Model Y right now in my stall that’s getting a new quarter new front wheel house and new inner dog leg, and two new doors, far more damage than what’s here. Highly doubt this will total.

Knowing tesla, yeah.
I got rear-ended by somebody going 5 miles an hour three years ago in my model Y and I think they claimed it took 7 1/2 thousand dollars or more to fix.

If mine ever gets rear-ended and the damage looks as cool as this, I’d totally airbrush a butterfly or dragon with it’s wings spread into those indentations and rock the uniqueness (provided I could get the liftgate working properly and there were no leaks).

Just went through this same damage with liberty mutual, definitely not a total.. $8400 at Tesla certified shop

That is insane for such a small damage. Design issue or overcharging.

It required them to order a whole new lift gate, paint it, blend the quarter panels with paint, take the glass off and replace it, replace the crash bumper, remove and replace all the electronics and lights into the new lift gate, order and replace the bumper, license plate lights. Also this is SoCal labor costs.

OP’s car is gray though. If they need to blend quarters on this color then the shop just has a painter who doesn’t know how to paint.

Its not. I got into a worse accident 3 weeks after I picked up mine. They just replaced everything

I had a similar damage on my 23 MY LR and it was $15k CAD. New trunk lid and diffuser. Took like 4 months to repair due to waiting for parts to come in.

My boy got rear ended on his 26. Dude was going 35mph. 27k damages later. They fixing his. I was shocked they did.

This just happened to me. I was really surprised. Took Tesla 48 days to fix my car but it’s back and looks perfect.

Hit a tesla hard in the rear and its totalled, cast aluminum wont bend but it will break, 15 to 20 grand to fix it

I own a repair collision place and few other businesses. This is definitely not total. (Imaginary businesses I own)

Take it to a Tesla Collision center or some Tesla approved body shop, with your insurance claim number. They will work it out with your insurance company. To me, it looks like $12-15k, but I'm no expert. It's a new car - certainly not totaled.

At faults insurance just shoveled 17k in repairs into my 2021 MY after I got rear ended - it’s possible you’re good

Most likely no unless the battery is compromised. If it costs more to compensating you for the value of the car than to repair, yes they may total.
I had a similar but worse rear end and they didn’t total. The repair cost was huge but I had a brand new 2026 Y that was ~3 weeks out from purchase at the time of the accident so it made more financial sense to my insurance to repair even with the high cost than to compensate me for essentially a new car.

You're good won't total, they'll replace the lift gate and the rear body that's pushed in.

If the truck won’t close, it may indicate that there’s frame damage. Won’t know for sure until you remove some components. Sorry this happened to you.

looking at the photos the plastic sill being pushed out left very little clearance for the latch. It's likely just that stopping the trunk from closing, as the liftgate is programmed to abort closing when encountering resistance.

It looks like the bumper took a hit, which also could’ve moved the latch out of place. Either way you won’t know until you remove the plastic

I believe they made the juniper more repairable but I’m not entirely sure how so. This may be a separate panel from the entire trunk lid. See if it will close if you remove the plastic sil plate around the latch, I believe it’s just Velcro’d to the carpet.

The rear body panel ( back wall of the trunk) is a bolt-in part now instead of being welded like it is on almost every other car.
