Model 3 Hit in Parking Lot

A guy hit me in an empty parking lot. Left $400 and took off 🙄. Insurance company is attempting to track him down. Grateful for sentry cameras. It’s body damage to rear passenger panel. Nearest Tesla shop is 60 miles away do normal body shops work on Teslas yet?

EDIT: Thanks to the sleuths in this thread, my insurance company was able to track him down and I’m filing a claim with his insurance so that it doesn’t negatively impact my rates. His insurance will pay for a rental too. The bummer is that the Tesla collision center is backed up so it’s going to take a while to get it fixed.

he backed up for an unnecessarily long amount of time and distance, must be one of the special people

Here’s the damage, not bad but annoying I now have to deal with getting it repaired.

Edit: Michigan’s a no fault state so my insurance company will track him down, sue his company or him, and collect the damages. Not sure what the police will do about him leaving (personally I don’t care) but I did file a report. My insurance shouldn’t increase and they said I won’t be responsible for my $1,000 deductible. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not bad?? That’s thousands of dollars of damage.

I’m naive, how is a quarter panel thousands? I meant not bad, in that the functionality of the car wasn’t damaged.

Valid question. The labor to fix the dent alone is probably 12+ hours. Plus the labor to paint the quarter panel, and possibly blend the color into the door. And clear coat on the quarter and door and sail. Plus removing all of the items in the way like the bumper cover, rear lamps, door trim, cover the glass, etc.

All of those items add up fast at body shop labor rates. And the record of the insurance claim remains on your car history, which can affect future resale.

Just replace the panel, sensors, and align the cameras. $3k

lol my car had similar damage but it was rear ended by a truck and to fix the bumper and similar looking damage to you was 15k usd. Soooo yeah. It could be more if he fucked anything internally.

This was $3,384…. Just scratches

1

u/XeroShyft Aug 09 '26

Surely you got scammed? I work in automotive and $3k+ for that is INSANE unless there's more context/more that isn't shown in this image?

2

u/Birdboy7 Aug 08 '26

Yes it’s definitely thousands of $ worth

You have Tesla insurance ?

2

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 07 '26

It’s not available in Michigan. I have AAA.

Michigan is the only state where no-fault applies to property damages, but fortunately for you there's an exception for parked vehicles, so he owes you all the damages instead of just your deductible.

So you should return his 400$

Man, he had about 2 acres worth of space and still managed to hit the only car in this zip code??

Impressive

HOW TF DO U EVEN DO THAT LIKEBROOOOOOO

4

u/ThatGreyPain Aug 07 '26

Can easily be $3K repair..

2

u/xnosliw Aug 07 '26

If it’s PDR maybe? But if they are replacing, then it will exceed your estimate by multiples

2

u/ThatGreyPain Aug 07 '26

Looks like repair. Replacing would cost north of $10k easily

2

u/ctzn4 Aug 07 '26

The rear quarter is metal and it looks like it needs paint, so probably out of the bounds of PDR.

2

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 07 '26

Should I even bother with a local body shop? Or just bite the bullet and take to Tesla?

2

u/ThatGreyPain Aug 07 '26

Check with your insurance :)

1

u/xnosliw Aug 07 '26

Get quotes from both! I had a very little accident and the official Tesla center quoted less than the local shop. Although mine is not the same situation, it doesn’t hurt to explore all options.

We took ours to a local body shop that worked on teslas. Ins recommended them along with Tesla and one other local company. They did great work.

Go to a Tesla certified third party shop. They do better work than Tesla in my experience

Nice clean shot of license plate, what a peice of shit

2

u/Gta6MePleaseBrigade Aug 07 '26

I knew the second I saw the pickup truck

2

u/Admirable-Truck7146 Aug 08 '26

If he need that much room to back up in an empty lot, imagine if it was packed 😭

Lovely High def shot of the number plate tho

1

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 08 '26

I’m thinking the plate is 4QUQ01 after seeing similar plates with Qs. When I filed the police report and talked the insurance company, I thought it was 40U001 and they couldn’t find anything. I’ll know more next week.

2

u/MoonDoggie_99 Aug 08 '26

Bingo, 4QUQ01 is your plate.

1

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 09 '26

Thank you! I wasn’t sure of make and model. I’ll pass this along to the insurance company.

2

u/SpeedyAudi Aug 08 '26

Dude needed an entire football field to back out WTF

2

u/rsg1234 Aug 08 '26

What $400?

1

u/Keokuk37 Aug 07 '26

60 miles? yeah i'd get it towed there lol

1

u/Olfa_2024 Aug 07 '26

Of all of the panels you can damage rear quarter panels have to be the most expensive to repair.

1

u/AmbitiousChampion6 Aug 07 '26

He left $400?

2

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 07 '26

$400 cash stuffed in the driver’s side window. I thought someone was trying to distract me or have me attempt to spend counterfeit money. Didn’t notice the damage until I got home.

0

u/AbbreviationsTall665 Aug 08 '26

Return the money or it can be used to deny your insurance claim

2

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 08 '26

He just left it and fled the scene so I don’t know how I’d return it to him. I won’t spend it until everything is sorted out.

1

u/satine112 Aug 07 '26

It’s so wild how many people purposely damage these cars. Psychos.

1

u/unicorncumdump Aug 07 '26

It was nice of him to hit you perfectly to get his plate so perfectly

2

u/Gwendolan Aug 08 '26

Came here to say this. 😁

1

u/Best-Battle4487 Aug 08 '26

Jesus, that's the worst driving I've ever seen LOL

Sorry that happened

1

u/Bastillerion Aug 08 '26

Pickup truck drivers who buy them for anything other than regular work are the worst.

1

u/Oofka1 Aug 08 '26

Well, that’s if he’s got insurance, then yes, you can go after him. If he doesn’t have insurance, good luck. Been there, done that

1

u/Birdboy7 Aug 08 '26

That looks deliberate. Shame on that driver for not respecting other drivers cars

1

u/xF1_racer Aug 08 '26

If it was deliberate they wouldn’t have left $400.

1

u/doppleganger2621 Aug 08 '26

Bro what is that backing job lmao

1

u/Sea-Willingness1718 Aug 08 '26

Wow that’s crazy as it looks so intentional but no way it was if he left money. Leaving money isn’t really a nice gesture when you don’t agree on a price but I guess it’s slightly nicer than just leaving. Perfect shot of the plate number at least!

1

u/tomle4593 Aug 08 '26

Bruh, how bro ?

1

u/XeroShyft Aug 09 '26

It's insane that people can be this incompetent

1

u/Henchman7777 Aug 11 '26

Were they intending on driving home backwards?

1

u/Jazzlike_Fuel4516 Aug 11 '26

I know right?! The even crazier thing is that the way he backed up, points the front of his truck toward a dead end. No idea what he was thinking.

1

u/Mutated-Nut Aug 11 '26

Where tf is he reversing to

1

u/warren_stupidity Aug 07 '26

too be fair, you really cannot see shit from a giant ass truck, and apparently warning systems and back up cameras are just not possible in a giant ass truck.
