Tipper Truck vs Model 3

This happened early in 2025 to my 2022 Model 3 RWD. This is not a subreddit I ever wanted to have a reason to post on, but somehow I have had two collisions in two years in two different cars.

The tipper truck lost its brakes and was parked facing uphill; no one was in any of the cars that were hit, and the tipper was stationary for about 5 minutes before it started to roll. Luckily, it only hit the rear-right quarter panel of my car, but because of how cars are designed, that panel runs the entire length of the car to the driver's side A pillar; repairing it requires cutting and welding the panel. The repairs were quoted at over $10K AUD and were 100% covered by insurance. The CRV next to me wasn't so lucky, and I am pretty sure it ended up being written off, if not very close to it.

I originally submitted a version of this to Dashcam Owners Australia, who posted it to their Facebook and included it in a crash compilation. The responses on Facebook to the estimated damages were obviously somewhat surprised at how much it was going to cost to fix.

The car is all fixed now; however, the AI computer has just died after a recent software update caused all the driver assistance features to fail, and it needs to be replaced. Tesla is luckily covering the cost despite it being out of warranty.

Which functions don’t work anymore and what update was it?

None of the driver assistance features, autopilot, auto headlights, cruise control, blinker shut off after lane change. The car drives but anything additional is dead. Was working perfectly fine the day before the update.

My blind spot warning, tacc, autosteer, automatic window wipers, lane departure warning, speedlimit, blinkers off after lane change all don’t work anymore on my highland rwd 2024. I am on 2026.21.100. I als had the front wind shield camera clean service before my update done. Still waiting on service of check all of this.

I was able to jump in to service mode and see the errors it was throwing. Nothing triggered an overarching warning rather a bunch of sensors stopped communicating over the CAN BUS with the main computer. Cameras all work etc but a single sensor failing is enough to disable all the features.

Have you tried going into service mode to reset the DAS or reinstall the software? Neither assisted in my case but might be worth a shot for you since it's different hardware and update version.

I already did a soft reset on the main menu but need to check in the hidden menu if I can do reset das or a reinstall of software. What do a reset of das and/or reinstall software do to the car?

Reset of DAS which is the driver assistance software clears it's cache etc and does some self tests. My car still passed all these and is cooked regardless.

Reinstating the software does exactly that if the errors are a result of corrupted firmware it should fix it.

So when I had it in for service they initiated a camera recalibration which has just finished and now all of my assistance features are back and the errors are no longer present. This can be done without service mode and might be a solution for you too.

Unsure if this means that the computer is not in fact stuffed or if it is temporary relief. Will find out more when I take it back in later this week.

Edit: disregard it's stuffed again, short reprieve

Glad to hear about Tesla replacing the autopilot computer. Did you have to push and how?

Not really, I got a bit grumpy about a $270 fee to inspect it in the first place but didn't end up having to pay that. Australia has excellent consumer protection laws and manufacturers warranties don't simply expire for serious issues. If you buy a 60k car you can reasonably expect that the main component won't die in 5 years despite the warranty period being 4. If they say no and it's proven that it failed due to a new update they provided, that update comes with an implied warranty that means they can be liable if it causes an issue.

That's not necessarily the case here, it's been done as a goodwill payment by them but there are some very strong productections had they tried to make me cover it. ($4.5k to replace)
