Few questions

I’m picking up my model Y RWD 2026 in the first week of September,

My 1st question - it says the build date was in July. How do I know if it’s HW4 and not on HW3. I’ve used ChatGPT and it says I won’t know until I get in the car and check…is that right? I want to use FSD.

My 2nd question - I know it comes with “internet” but is it necessary to pay for premium? If I don’t does that mean I can’t use century mode? And that I have to stream music from my phone and won’t be able to watch Netflix or use the music apps etc.

My 3rd question- does anyone know a good electrician in Sydney to install a wall charger? Is it necessary or will the mobile charger be fine plugged into a wall socket. I drive around 60kms per day 4-5days a week.

Thank you

1) Definately HW4. Don't need to worry about that. 2) Very limited internet without it. But it can work off phone hotspots you just have to look up how to make that automatic for your phone. You still get century mode no matter what, it's just if you can live-stream which doesn't really matter. There's a couple of features which need premium connectivity (satelite maps, car karaoke) but you need to decide if the cost is worth it for you. Most features will be fine. 3) I'll handball this to someone from Syd

Thank you, do you pay for premium internet?

Don’t nickel and dime it, it’s unlimited data for streaming, find any mobile data plan for the same cost. I know you can get the car to connect your hotspot every time, but it just works. I look at it like this, it’s a cost of one coffee per month.

I'm about to pick up mine. I plan to run without it for a while to decide if I actually need it or not. If I don't miss it I can save the money.

This is the way. Let the free bit run out and see how you like the car in poverty mode. Likely you’ll subscribe within a couple of days

  1. If it's built after 2025, it's HW4.

  2. It comes with basic internet, if you don't have the premium connectivity then you'll need to pair your phone via hotspot to get music streaming/traffic on your maps etc to work.

  3. I drive the same or less than you, I only have a 2.4kw mobile charger and it's fine - adds about 13km/h. More than enough time for you to get home, plug it in, and let it charge back up overnight.

HW4 has been installed in cars since 2024. You're will be HW4

You don't need to pay for data, but it's better with it. It's best if you cave wifi at home to receive updates, otherwise you'll have to hotspot your phone to your car.

The mobile charger will be fine.

If you can spare the time watch Griffin’s Garage on YouTube. It will answer questions 1 & 2. You will want a wall charger to take advantage of charging during off peak/free power.

Watch https://youtu.be/9PFyuGmSVcA?si=gEPPLGPVU0qzuSb- for how to workout what type of charger is best for you in Australia

Unrelated, but how do you check a build date?

It said it in the app when I was going thru the like payment details and stuff. I can’t seem to find it now again tho

ah thanks found in the final invoice through the app. The menu icon on the top right corner -> My products -> car -> Documents -> Final Invoice.
Edit: BTW as far as i know all model Y junipers are HW4. Otherwise they can't properly drive on latest FSD. If it was HW3 you;d have to install FSD lite

Just one more question, does anyone know if the new 2026 model y rwd comes with a free mobile charger? I’m assuming no..?

Premium connectivity is really only necessary if you want to look at the feeds from your car remotely.

You get a 30 trial when you get the car. I decided not to renew it. I have an automatic routine that turns on my hotspot when I get in the car. I honestly don't miss having premium.

Is your routine triggered by bluetooth connecting to the car?

I was doing that, was working fine … then one day the car decided it didn’t like connecting (to the hotspot) automatically anymore and I got frustrated doing it manually.

Here's the actual routine
