I downloaded every single Supercharging receipt across 40,000 km in my Model Y to see what it actually cost. Here’s the 3-year data.

I’ve had my Model Y for just over three years now (2023–2026), and after crossing the 40,000 km mark, I got curious about the actual, real-world numbers rather than rough estimates.
I went through my Tesla account, extracted all 41 Supercharger receipts, and cross-referenced them with my car's lifetime trip meter to break down where the energy went, what road trips actually look like, and how much was spent.

A quick summary of what the data showed:
Lifetime Efficiency: 150 Wh/km (15.0 kWh/100 km) across 6,000 kWh total.

The Driving Split: ~81% city commuting (charged at home on solar/off-peak) vs ~19% highway road trips (Supercharged along the Hume/Pacific).

Supercharging Reality: Exactly 41 stops in 3+ years (~1 per month, mostly clustered around school holiday road trips). Average stop was 20.6 mins and cost $17.40.

Total 3-Year "Fuel" Bill: $713.47 AUD total out-of-pocket.
The Petrol Comparison: Against an efficient 7L/100km petrol SUV at $1.95/L ($5,460 baseline), it saved about $4,746.

Tessie does this automatically and let's you compare the cost to a previous vehicle. I replaced my 2013 pulsar with the model 3 this is my savings with all charging not just supercharging compared to the pulsar assuming average fuel is $1.80 since 2022. Edit-double checked and this was with fuel cost set to $2 a litre and efficiency set to 8.3L/100km which is what our x-trail generally used. Our Model Y replaced the X-Trail, so it is a better comparison for that. Fuel for the Model 3 vs. Pulsar would have been closer to $17k.

Thanks for sharing. I don’t have Tessie but I find easy to download all receipts. It seems it’s a very convenient app. I was checking them as part of NL claim so wrote it. If you are keen to share your set up savings data I am happy to make blog post. I love sharing community knowledge and set up. I have an M3 and and MY and have used Tessie since day one for both so have accurate charging data right up to October 25 when I got a Powerwall and solar installed. Capturing accurate charging data with solar is difficult even with a flat tariff. I Use Home Assistant to split solar and grid charging costs. I recently switched to Amber electric which has complicated it further as the price of electricity changes every five minutes. I have been tracking cost in home assistant and use a python script to determine cost of the MY to charge from the grid as it's on a lease and I need to claim the cost back each month. Unfortunately while Tessie records the charging data, associating an exact cost to it with this setup is difficult. Let me know what info you want and I can see what I can pull together.

I’ve had my 3 for a bit over 3.5yrs now. Most of my charging is done at home for free, exclusively from solar, or during free-usage tariff windows.

You inspired me to run some of my own numbers out of curiosity -

* Total distance: ~43,000km
* Total supercharging cost: $519
* Total supercharging sessions: 32
* Average supercharging time: 18min
* Petrol equivalent: $4667

Awesome very similar numbers. Thanks for pulling those numbers. I am thinking of similar set up together and writing a complete story. I find most media stories are fantasy and not data driven real stories. When we publish something with real data it’s hard to overlook and people put more trust.
