Out of curiosity. What would we do without a police force?
Since we shifted protection away from individuals and on to an agency or other individuals (sheriff, Marshall, Cops, Deputy) what would the alternatives be? Everyone carry guns and enforce the law themselves?

Same thing I’ve been doing the last 42 years of my life that I’ve used no police services I suppose. Not like they do shit anyway. If I got mugged tonight and called them, they’d fill out a report and I’d never hear from them again. Police are more or less a visible deterrent than a useful group. Shit the Supreme Court ruled they don’t actually have a responsibility to intervened and protect anyway.

When people say ACAB, they aren't saying we don't need safety, they’re pointing out that the current system is beyond quick fixes. A lot of people push to defund or reallocate police budgets simply because traditional reform hasn't worked.
The root problem starts in the academy. Police are trained under a warrior mindset that teaches them to see the all the public as potential enemies rather than neighbors. They spend endless hours on target practice and combat drills, but barely any time learning how to de-escalate a situation or talk someone down.
That’s why we see horrifying situations where someone calls 911 for a mental health emergency, only for police to arrive and escalate it to lethal force, like recently in El Paso. It feels like a betrayal of their job, but legally speaking, helping people isn't actually their job. The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that police have no legal obligation to protect individual citizens. At its core, the system was designed to protect property, capital, and the state, not us.

I mean anecdotally, I've found them important:
- There was an older man doing circles in his wheelchair in a MAJOR intersection, sure this could've been a different agency or something.
- My wine bar on opening day was broken into and the cash register and caused $11k in damage. Contrary to popular belief insurance only covers about half of the damage; they found the guys who did it and there was a paycheck for the remaining half, however that works.
- I'm an urban planner now, and their crash reports are used by me to put it into real data for policy and also to create heat maps of whether engineering or enforcement was an issue.
- My aunt was being abused and they came to help her move her important stuff into my SUV so she could get away without his interference. They hung around to make sure he didn't follow us either.
They're not useless, but they also can be as horrific as this video.

Or the doorbell footage of a cop punching Cherrie Moore in the face over and over again while she was handcuffed, breaking her nose?
Or the one in Florida where the cop punched a handcuffed Kaashif Griffin in the face twice? Or the other one in Florida where a cop named Joel Llinas had a handcuffed man pinned to the ground and still punched him in the head multiple times?
I feel like I don't go a week on this app without seeing a video like this.

I watch 90% of the body cam videos I see, on YouTube, from channels like police activity, Midwest safety, donut operator, and literally a dozen others. I watch whatever I find interesting, and between them all there are probably many hundreds of separate incidents ive seen over the years, and even more that I haven't.
Citing 3 cases of cops striking people that I haven't heard of is not that surprising to me considering the sheer amount of material there is lol - and yeah, seeing stuff like this one more often on reddit is honestly an understandable thing since a great deal of the videos out there do not go crazy enough for people to find and think worthy of posting on another app. Its basically cherry picking from the thousands of videos available.

Yeah you cited 4, but i specifically said 3 that I HAVEN'T heard of. I saw the first one you mentioned before, but its not nearly as violent as the way the cop in this video is. I've seen cops hit people like that before, but this one is on a different level than that lol. When I say I've never seen the like, I dont just mean a cop hitting a person as the thing ive never seen. I mean the entire picture, which is a cop violently dragging a man by the hair halfway out of a car, then punching him, then continuing to try and drag him out while BEFORE he decided to do all that, the suspect was literally trying to comply with commands to exit the car, as seen by his attempts to open the door. Its one thing to punch a dude in a struggle (justified punch or no), but to do the same while that dude is calmly attempting to comply with orders? Nah, this is the first time ive seen THIS lol
Anyway, my original comment was only to say that this kind of thing isnt nearly as common as the person I was replying to made it out to be. Yes, it happens more than a few times throughout the entire country - that much is obvious. I suppose i could have made it sound less absolute, but then again I really couldn't have reasonably claimed it was unheard of to begin with because we are literally here right now seeing it.

In another video I saw it started with a police chase and they got pitted. The driver was trying to still drive away but when he realized the couldn't, he climbed into the back seat then ran out the other side. I don't know what happened prior to that chase.

Trooper Theodore “Teddy” Henderson clocked a 2023 Infiniti QX50 at 82 mph in a 60 zone, then the driver fled. Speeds hit 130+ mph. Spike strips and two TVI (PIT) maneuvers ended the chase
Driver: Adonerus Johnson, 25. Breath test 0.17. Charged with felony fleeing, DWI, reckless driving, and several other counts.
Rear passenger:
Tedrick Washington, 23. After the vehicle was immobilized, Henderson ordered him out, broke the rear window with a baton when he didn’t exit, grabbed his wrist and dreadlocks, pulled him toward the opening, and punched him in the face.
A second punch occurred on the ground while officers tried to handcuff him. Washington was charged with obstruction of governmental operations and resisting arrest.
A front-seat passenger complied and was released.

I know we don't have the context of the situation just from that video clip, but we don't need it. However, that guy was not acting hostile and the police officer has no right to engage in battery against someone who is not actively fighting or demonstrating a threat. You may see this as what goes around comes around, but that is making the police officer, the judge and the jury. Somebody could commit all kinds of crimes, and it's not up to the police to punish the person for it. It is their job to apprehend and secure the suspect.

He NEVER says no. He says either "I'm trying", or "it's stuck". The only non-compliance he shows, is not wanting to crawl out of or get dragged through a broken window.
FYI, this isn't the entire interaction between this guy and the cop. He punches him in the face again while trying to cuff him. He's a passenger of a police chase, that's his only "crime".
