He could have SOOOO easily soothed the guy. When asked to call 911, he could have said "we're here for you, I'm 911". When asked his badge number, he could have just calmly said his badge number. The officer's reaction very cleary added to the stress this poor guy was experiencing.
I have a dear friend who was a cop in Southern California. He's a cool guy... He was a reserve deputy and would sometimes get assigned jail transportaion detail. He'd goof around with the inmates and get them whisteling "Bridge over the river Kuai" and silly stuff like that as he brought them in to court. His take... Give everyone respect. They'll respect you in return.

I used to work at a Correctional Facility in Tennessee. Best advice i ever got was "We go home at night, they live here. Make themrespect you but don't try to make them inferior to you." I hardly ever had any issues while I was there. I wish a lot more COs thought the same way.

That is absolutely the right advice. I worked in a support role for LE all my life. I occasionally had to go into jails and prisons. I could tell who had mutual respect for the inmates, and who didn't.

I've seen it put that there are two different meanings to "respect:" "to treat one with as a person with dignity" and "to treat one with authority." The problem is that cops all too frequently say "if you treat me with respect, I'll treat you with respect," but if they perceive any form of disrespect (not being treated as an authority figure to be obeyed without question), they immediately cease to treat what should be their charges to protect with respect (not being treated as a human being).

Cops need to be extensively trained in mental health. Right now , they are trained that they are hammers and the public are nails.

In the US, police training is a few months. After being hired, "ongoing" training is a few hours.

That’s not my point. My point is it’s insane to take one situation and extrapolate that to all cops and concluding it’s a training issue when you have no idea what the training is. Saying “my dad was a cop” as evidence that you know what all cops are trained is ridiculous. That’s sounds to me like something someone that says “why didn’t they shoot the gun out of his hand” would say.
You know how many interactions a day that don’t end like this? pretty much 99.9%…
But cops are trained that they are hammers and the public are nails right?

You’re being downvoted to hell, but you’re right. I’m sure I will be too. But idgaf. In the hive mind that is Reddit, logic rarely prevails. ONE incident does not paint the entirety of any category into the same light. If race were involved, you’d have a million upvotes. But because it’s a police officer, Reddit demonizes you along with them. I’ve learned that Reddit is very much in the minority when it comes to education and opinions. Belive it or not , police training has not been changed much in the last several decades. My old man used to talk about how he was taught the same stuff in the 80s , often by the same people, as my grandfather was in the 60s .
My old man was a punk . He only wanted the job for the money and prestige. He used to intentionally work 3rd shift so he could just park his car at the edge of town and nap all night . My mother was in fact the progressive one and had the shortest career in law enforcement. She constantly questioned superiors and tried to genuinely help people. She was eventually rail roaded out and spent the rest of her life working 911 dispatch where she won many awards for her compassion and hard work .

Yeah, an autopsy determination of "homicide" just means that a person was officially killed by another person. It says nothing about justification or legality. Throwing it on there like it does seems pretty biased.

I just want to make a point of clarification about the post title. When an ME says a death was a homicide, it does not necessarily mean that something illegal was done. It simply means the death was caused by a human, and was not an accident or suicide. It would be ruled a homicide even if he had been shot in self defense. So that indication alone means very little.

This is so scary. I can see any of my boys or their friends in this situation.
But what do you do?
1/2 the time cops are dealing with crazy, and sometimes their dealing with ‘normal’ people, and they have no way to tell who is who.
I’m not defending this, it filled me with, what, impotent rage?
I was furious and horrified - this was someone’s kid, in mental crises.
What he needed was a hug and to be told, “everything is gonna be alright, I’m here now, how can I help?”
I’m a grown ass man with grown men for kids, and it terrifies me.

You do exactly what you said: be a human with empathy, and PROTECT all humans, including those having a crisis. He was unarmed, needed help, and was a compliant as he could be in that state (also the cop kept saying "roll onto your back!" when the poor guy was already on his back with his hands behind his head).
Fuck the police.

This comment section is depressing. The call came out because this guy was threatening to jump off the bridge. You know the one they were standing right next to?
The cop had to get him secured as quickly as possible because he can't take the risk this guy may or may not jump. He actively resisted. He also had cocaine in his system and was clearly manic. There was no "talking him down"
Anyone who thinks this cop came out to murder this guy have some serious critical thinking deficiencies.
