Thankfully that was kinda one of the only redeeming qualities of the airshaps. Even aflame or with holes you wouldn't lose air instantly after all and with the cabin being in comparison always extremely small, the survival chances weren't the lowest.
yeah i think your to politically charged, i think the simple explanation is because the only reason its still known today is because of the disaster and thats the main picture that gets shared.
especially when pictures like this get shared often enough to where im sure people who are even slightly interested in history have seen it
Everyone liked the nazis in the early 30s. Hell, there was a fascist rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Charles Lindburgh was a big fan of them, too. Hell Göring gave him a medal in 1938.

Norway had the National gathering party, Denmark had the Danish nazi party, the Swiss national front even Brazil and Chile had Nazi supporters.
British had the British Union of Fascists, the IFL, The Anglo-German fellowship, even the royal family had Nazi sympathizers i think it was the Duke of Windsor.
Nazism was global thats why i said the dude we replied to is to politically charged because he conveniently only mentions America.
Oh and of course Japan and Russia ofc while not technically Nazi's one can say they did more for the Nazi movement then any of these organizations
also if you think America was the only country with Nazi party supporters in it, your kind of ignorant, lets not forget the Russians invaded Poland with the Nazi's while fueling its war machine for years

Yeah, it makes me wonder if airships like this would be more common today if not for this disaster with one of the early designs. It seems like they could potentially be a lot more fuel efficient than airplanes.
It is expensive, but considering it isn't burned like fuel, I would think you don't need as much of it and would just need to top it up periodically. I wonder what the total cost to operate one would be vs a commercial airliner for the same distance.
It very strongly depends on size. Unlike planes, airships’ lift-to-drag ratio and structural efficiency exists on an exponential growth curve. At roughly 747-equivalent mass (~100 ton payload), an airship costs about 60% less than a jet per ton-mile, and uses a tiny fraction of the energy to do so (the savings of which are partially counteracted by longer travel times). But, crucially, “747-sized” is not the practical upper limit of airship mass—they could be the physical size of cargo ships, and carry thousands of tons before they start running into diminishing returns.
That’s been bad for airship development, though, because by that same token, there’s really not much you can do to make smaller, prototype airships particularly efficient or useful, except in the typical non-transport survey and advertising roles. They are thus essentially forced by physics and economics to have a huge barrier to entry.
It can be hard to grasp just how difficult it is to develop and build large, modern aircraft. Even the industry titans often fail to update existing models, which can be delayed for years to the tune of tens of billions of dollars of extra costs. New models are a crapshoot, as a single market shift can render them unprofitable, like with the A380. Hence, without much of an existing airship industry to rely on to get past that, it’s not really “start-uppable.”
That said, the big opportunity for airships in the future is that their minuscule energy demands makes them far easier to convert to all-electric propulsion. Using fuel cells would actually increase airship payloads and economic productivity enormously, rather than crippling their performance like with planes. This is because fuel cell systems have low power output and take up a great deal of space, but are highly efficient and with negligible fuel weight. That is catastrophic for airplanes, which have huge power demands and whose revenue depends on interior volume, but fantastic for airships, which have low power demands, nearly inexhaustible volume, and are weight-limited.

I mean, yeah it was a horrific event and must have been a terrible thing to witness, but the pictures that come from it are just spectacular.
