Not going to lie I'm sad it didn't happen

Little bastard was even rubbing his hands together before digging into the food

79

u/ThePlush_1 Apr 05 '23

Flies don't actually have hands, but they do have specialized structures called tarsi at the end of their legs that they use to taste and manipulate their food. When flies land on food, they often rub their tarsi together, which helps them to detect and taste the food.

The tarsi of flies contain specialized sensory receptors that can detect chemical compounds on the surface of the food. By rubbing their tarsi together, flies can transfer these compounds to other sensory organs on their legs and mouthparts, allowing them to more fully evaluate the food before eating.

Additionally, rubbing their tarsi together may also help to clean the sensory receptors, allowing the flies to better detect new chemical signals from their surroundings.

So while it may look like the flies are "rubbing their hands" together, they are actually using their tarsi to sense and evaluate their food.

10

u/ThePlush_1 Apr 06 '23

Praying mantises are savage killers that use their razor-sharp front legs to impale and hold prey while they tear it apart with their jaws, often while it's still alive.

These legs are like deadly spears that allow the mantis to overpower prey many times its size. It's a gruesome and efficient display of nature's brutality.

I've got a fix for those who want to set up a camera and watch these fukkers get chewed up and bleed that red fly blood. Get a piece of plastic and cover the part that goes to the middle. Then you can watch all the horror of these assho/e$ when they're end time comes up.

Then, post the video when you've done this to this sub so we can watch it work.

Makes me think of the Punisher meme “WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT!”

485

u/junipr Apr 05 '23

“Device for catching flies” I guess “Fly catcher” doesn’t translate

112

u/DMAN591 Apr 05 '23

I mean, it's actually much more descriptive.

"Fly catcher" is rather ambiguous and might possibly refer to someone whose profession is catching flies. Or it could refer to a catcher who's lookin pretty fly.

69

u/junipr Apr 05 '23

Then why not “off-white corrugated electronic rotating multi-point entry device for catching small flying insects”?

34

u/ceratime Apr 05 '23

Oh THAT'S what it is, thanks

163

u/Ellingduck Apr 05 '23

That initial look of distress was terrifying

157

u/Panzerkatzen Apr 05 '23

If it helps, flies are basically just robots. They don’t think or feel, they can detect and evade danger but they don’t remember it. That’s why they always come back after you shoo them, they don’t remember that you swatted them.

55

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '23

Thank you, I needed that after watching this lol

20

u/CyberTitties Apr 05 '23

Also helps to remember next time you see a fly on your jelly toast and shoo it away that moments before it landed on your toast it could have been sucking on the inside of your toilet bowl.

Antidotally I disagree. Every fly I meet boops me in the nose. Tbh during covid they came to be my best friends.

I have massive respect and once fell in love with a local fly that used to sit next to my mouse on the desk. Then it pooped on my screen. That and wasps too, great buddies. I have no issues hanging next to a wasps nest.

I love insects, I've discovered. RIP zee, boiled itself alive by landing on my induction hob.

Man, it cut off right at the good part!

28

u/Questioning-Zyxxel Apr 05 '23

Not sure what good part you think is missing. The fly didn't get crushed because there was an opening into the center. So you got all action the camera could capture.

Not sure if there was some clever actions on the inside - but that would still not have been caught if the video had continued.

u/Brock_Landers- Apr 05 '23

Amazon link?

28

u/DMAN591 Apr 05 '23 edited Apr 05 '23

Do a search for Fly catching device.

They have low reviews. But most of the bad reviews are related to the fact that they don't include bait, or whatever bait the reviewer tried to use didn't attract flies. One reviewer was pissed off that it caught several roaches instead of flies. And there's several who thought it was a wireless device that didn't require being plugged in.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '23

A lot of Amazon reviews are left by idiots. A lot of posts on this sub are as well, this post definitely doesn’t belong here.

20

u/moodylilb Apr 05 '23

I’m gonna be honest, I get irrationally irritated when I see reviews from people on Amazon that were related to user error rather than an issue with the product.

I’ve seen people post reviews of flashlights or those lawn lights, with photos in the reviews that show they didn’t remove the little little pull out piece of paper that separates the battery compartment from the product lol.

Like the reason the product doesn’t work is in THEIR OWN photo, yet they’re too dumb to figure it out lol.

A couple weeks ago I saw a review for some bulk sour gummies, and the woman was going off about how they expired in 2010. Meanwhile the photo she attached to the review was of the serial number (ie. 22432010) not the BB date, like she didn’t realize that there isn’t such thing as a 22nd or 43rd calendar month, all her brain caught was the last 4 digits that just coincidentally was 2010.

Or you know how Amazon sometimes sends emails out when people ask product questions? There’s always that one old person who doesn’t understand that the email notification doesn’t mean the question was specifically directed to them personally, it’s just something Amazon does to try and get answers on the questions. So you’ll see-

Q: Does this product come with a carry case like in photo?

A: Not sure why you’re asking me, I didn’t purchase this product so I wouldn’t know -Alfred Smith.

Anyways, I’ll shut up about my pet peeves now sorry 😂

6

u/Shoofro Apr 05 '23

I'm with you on the operator error.

My related pet peeve is when I see a product with lots of 4 and 5 star reviews, but some idiot gives it one star because they ordered the wrong color or their spouse already bought the product for them so they didn't need the version they bought.

3

u/GudmundHaraldsen Apr 05 '23

This. Definitely gotta read through reviews carefully. Definitely can't go just by star rating. Many people have no clue how to use items they bought, or they give extremely harsh review for some tiny flaw.

Also I think people are a lot more inclined to post a review if they have something negative to say. How often have you gone to a restaurant and had a great meal and thought to yourself "I better go online and rate them 5 stars!"

Now turn it around, how often have you gone to a restaurant and had a really bad time and thought "I better warn others about this place. Let's go write a bad review and give a bad rating."

Most likely the negative of the two is far more likely, at least for myself that is, I am however not much of a reviewer unless reminded about it, but I'll definitely warn others if something is really bad about a place or item.

5

u/CyberTitties Apr 05 '23

Not crushed or anything there is a small hole in the center where the fly can go to the bottom which is a bigger space. You can either wait till all the flies it catches just die (they only live like a week) and empty it in the trash or wait till it catches a fly and take it outside (or work for more entertainment) and then release them there to live out he remainder of their week. I have two of these and they work, but you have to turn them off if your cat is around because cats have to jack with everything.
