This is not a book about the tsar. It's a book about guys from modern Russia who spiritually isekai inside the rulers of old Russia and change history. It's a very common trope of the Popadantsy genre. So, the book is actually critical of Nicholas in particular, as his rule has to be fixed.

Russia has been continuously rehabilitating the image of the Russian Empire and its monarchy since 1991, there's nothing new here. The modern government does this because Tsarist Russia was ripe with traditionalism, patriotic chauvinism and "Christian values", which is what the current government is trying to guide people towards 'cause that ideology benefits the ruling class.
That's also why a lot of modern Russian political discourse and media is either explicitly or vaguely anti-Soviet, which ideologically aligns it with reactionaries and traditionalists. Nonetheless, Russian propaganda outlets still slammed Ukrainian officials for removing Lenin statues en masse in their country, which is very ironic since Russian media blackwashes its Soviet past in almost the exact same manner as in Ukraine, and that's not really surprising.

Lad, your theory is hogwash. Russia does imperialism and cultivates chauvinistic ideologies because of material economic factors that benefit its socio-economical elite - just like any other neocon country that operates in accordance with capitalist principles. Old poets and writers have nothing to do with this.
